2,600 supportive housing units in NYC remain vacant despite new developments

The city has delivered on its promise to create more housing for homeless and mentally ill New Yorkers but has had trouble actually filling the units, according to a new report. Data released by the city last week obtained through a Freedom of Information Act (FOIA) request showed that 2,600 supportive housing units are still vacant despite New York City's urgent housing crisis and despite Mayor Eric Adams' pledge to streamline the application process for these apartments, as first reported by the New York Times.

199 affordable apartments available at new Bed-Stuy rental, from $375/month

A housing lottery opened this week for 199 affordable units at a new housing project in Brooklyn. Located at 1921 Atlantic Avenue in Bed-Stuy, the 14-story mixed-use building has 236 total units, several community facilities, and a ground-floor grocery floor. New Yorkers earning 30, 50, 70, and 80 percent of the area median income, or between $16,218 for a single person and $132,400 for a household of seven people, are eligible to apply for the apartments which range from $375/month studios to $2,501/month three bedrooms.

Finalist proposals unveiled for new climate change center on Governors Island

Mayor Eric Adams and the Trust for Governors Island on Wednesday unveiled the three finalists for the city's global competition to design a state-of-the-art research institution on Governors Island dedicated to climate solutions. The so-called Center for Climate Solutions will create 7,000 permanent jobs, approximately $1 billion in economic impact, and develop innovative ways for New York City and the rest of the world to address the climate crisis, according to the city. The winning design team will be announced next year.

10 years after Superstorm Sandy: rebuilding, redesigning and rethinking New York City

A decade ago, an Atlantic hurricane-turned-superstorm named Sandy caught ready-for-anything New York City completely off guard as it raged up the East Coast from the Caribbean to Canada. On October 29, 2012, the city was blindsided by an unanticipated storm surge that flooded streets and subway tunnels and cut power. It took some areas weeks to get the lights back on and, in the best of cases, open for business, and years to rebuild (an effort which is still ongoing). It goes without saying that the city would like this disaster to be the first and last of its kind, but predictions of future environmental impacts are front-page news daily. To that end, experts and innovators in architecture and engineering, government organizations, regulators, and planners have dedicated their efforts–and billions of dollars–to protect the city in a post-Sandy world. But what has really been accomplished–and is the city safer?

New food hall Olly Olly Market opening in Chelsea’s landmarked Starrett-Lehigh Building

Chelsea's landmarked Starrett-Lehigh Building is set to welcome a new 17,000-square-foot food hall on Wednesday. Located within the 1931 former freight terminal at 601 West 26th Street, the Olly Olly Market will be run by 16" and Center (16 OC) and host a selection of both Michelin-star and up-and-coming chefs, including Forsyth Fire Escape, Pizza Friendly Pizza, DdoBar by Joomak Bajum, and more. The market will be open Monday through Friday from 7 a.m. to 8 p.m.

New York Ranger Chris Kreider lists Tribeca condo for $3.8M

New York Ranger Chris Kreider is selling his condo in Tribeca for $3,800,000. The power forward and alternate captain for the Blueshirts bought the apartment at 101 Warren Street with partner Francesca Gentile in 2017 but has rented at the luxury tower since 2013. The two-bedroom pad measures just over 1,600 square feet and boasts a functional, spacious layout and stunning city and water views.

Lena Horne’s Upper East Side co-op, listed for $2.2M, has a built-in bar and diva-worthy closets

On a tree-lined Central Park-adjacent block on the Upper East Side, this pre-war co-op has the distinction of being the late singer and actress Lena Horne's "private refuge," according to the New York Times. The celebrated diva moved into the Volney hotel-turned-co-op at 23 East 74th Street in the 1980s, eventually owning five units on the building's fifth floor. Asking $2,195,000, this 2,100-square-foot, two-bedroom home–currently owned by Horne's daughter–is the last of those units to be listed. A combo of two units, the space is currently configured as a huge one-bedroom, but can easily accommodate two bedrooms with space to spare.

Russ & Daughters will open new location at Hudson Yards skyscraper

Iconic New York City culinary institution Russ & Daughters is opening a new outpost in Hudson Yards next year. The 109-year-old mainstay of the Lower East Side will serve its famed Jewish delicacies on the ground floor of 50 Hudson Yards, a Foster + Partners-designed skyscraper that topped out last year. As the New York Post first reported, the new location, opening in the spring of 2023, will take up 4,500 square feet and offer hand-sliced fish, a glass-enclosed bagel bakery, and a caviar and champagne bar.

Open House New York returns this month with free tours of 270+ places in NYC

The annual Open House New York Weekend returns for its 20th year this month and for the first time, the festival will be totally free to attend. OHNY takes place from October 21 through October 23 and offers an up-close look at more than 270 buildings, projects, and other spaces across New York City typically off-limits to the public. Even better, the festival has done away with its $5 reservation fee at places with restricted capacity and has introduced a new lottery system for ticketed locations that will replace its old first-come, first-serve model.

Whimsical ‘Wonderland’-inspired art exhibit and bar opens in Midtown

A new interactive art experience is bringing the whimsical world of Alice's Adventures in Wonderland to Midtown. Created by artist Alexa Meade, the Wonderland Dreams art installation includes more than 20 playfully hand-painted rooms in Meade's signature 3D style. Meade has painted every inch of the 26,000-square-foot space, from floor to ceiling, creating a multi-dimensional work of art inspired by the Lewis Carroll novel. Taking over the old Best Buy at 529 Fifth Avenue, the limited exhibition opens on Friday, October 7 and runs through April 2023. The accompanying wine bar is expected to open later this month.

City Winery’s new Grand Central location will offer wine to go as part of reusable bottle program

Picking up a bottle of wine for dinner on the way home from work will soon get easier. City Winery's newest location in Grand Central Terminal, opening on November 1, will debut a reusable bottle program, allowing guests to take wine to go, return the bottle to be washed, and receive a $5 credit toward the next one. Located on the west end of Vanderbilt Hall, the new City Winery includes three dining concepts: a signature experience with tasting bars, a grab-and-go all-day menu at City Jams, and a high-end restaurant, Cornelius.

José Andrés opened a new cocktail bar on the rooftop of The Ritz-Carlton New York, Nomad last week. Described as a "glittering jewel box," Nubeluz, (the name is a mash-up of the Spanish words "nube" for cloud and "luz" for light), sits 500 feet above Nomad, becoming a part of the skyline while also boasting 270-degree views of it.

Lawsuit seeks to bar Donald Trump from acquiring any New York real estate for five years

New York Attorney General Letitia James is looking to bar former President Donald Trump and his three adult children from acquiring real estate in New York for five years, a move that could deal a major blow to the family's business empire. In a civil lawsuit filed on Wednesday, James accused Trump and his business of engaging in years of deliberate financial fraud "to obtain a host of economic benefits." According to the Office of the Attorney General, Trump and the Trump Organization intentionally created more than 200 false and misleading valuations of assets in annual statements to defraud financial institutions from 2011 to 2021. The 214-page complaint comes after a three-year investigation into fraud across nearly two dozen Trump properties and assets.

‘Little Amal’ arrives in New York City, bringing attention to world’s refugees

Little Amal, a 12-foot puppet of a 10-year-old Syrian refugee, has come to New York City to bring attention to the needs of migrants and refugees. After landing at JFK Airport with her big green suitcase on Wednesday, Amal began her 17-day tour across all five boroughs in which she will take part in 55 unique events, considered one of the largest public art festivals in the city's history.

A new exhibition that explores the work of artist Edward Hopper and his relationship with New York City will open at the Whitney Museum this fall. Hopper, who called Greenwich Village home from 1913 until his death in 1967, uniquely captured an evolving city at a time of historic development and population growth. On view at the museum starting in October, Edward Hopper's New York will feature more than 200 paintings, watercolors, prints, and drawings by Hopper, along with additional archival materials like photographs and notebooks.

Iconic New York Harbor sailing experience returns to the Seaport after 9 years

After a nine-year hiatus, the Howard Hughes Corporation on Friday announced the return of Manhattan by Sail to Pier 17. Clipper City Tall Ship, its newly-renovated sailboat that will offer daily specialty sails and private charters, will launch this month. Departing from the east side of Pier 17 at 89 South Street, Clipper City will operate seven days a week, taking four trips a day with an additional late-night departure at 10 p.m.

José Andrés’ ThinkFoodGroup on Tuesday opened Zaytinya, a new restaurant and hotel in-room dining option at The Ritz-Carlton New York, Nomad. The restaurant features a mezze menu inspired by Turkish, Greek, and Lebanese cuisines in a 140-seat street-level restaurant with a mod-meets Mediterranean interior design courtesy of David Rockwell's Rockwell Group. The Nomad location will be the second for Zaytinya, which first opened in 2002 in Washington, DC.

Almost a year after severe flooding caused by Hurricane Ida left more than a dozen New Yorkers dead, the city has released a plan to prepare for extreme rainfall. With hurricane season well underway, Mayor Eric Adams last week unveiled the new action plan "Rainfall Ready NYC," which outlines steps New Yorkers should take during extreme rainfall. The city also updated its flood zone maps that help residents identify if they live in an area at risk of flooding.

New York City's beloved dining event that gives patrons the opportunity to eat at the city's best restaurants with discounted, prix-fixe menus is back for its 30th season. NYC & Company, the city's tourism agency, last week announced reservations are now open at 600 participating restaurants across 85 neighborhoods. The program, which launched in 1992, runs for a month from July 18 through August 21.

A penthouse on New York City's Billionaires' Row has sold for $74.34 million, the highest closed sale of 2022 so far. Taking up the entirety of the 20th floor of the Aman New York, a new hotel and residential project at the iconic Crown Building on Fifth Avenue, the home measures over 6,700 square feet and features a private saltwater swimming pool, cabana, and two terraces. The apartment--dubbed the "Jala Penthouse"--was originally listed for $83.53 million.
