The Bungalow is a new Montauk-style hangout on the Lower Manhattan waterfront

This Friday, the waterfront Upper Plaza at Brookfield Place will be transformed into The Bungalow, a "relaxing urban oasis inspired by the beachside retreats of Montauk." Guests can take in views of the Hudson River and New York Harbor while enjoying specialty cocktails and small bites. They'll also be able to enjoy live music and DJs, bocce courts, and weekly events and arts programming. The best part? It's free to enter.

A new technicolor mural is unveiled at Roosevelt Island’s annual ‘Pop-Up Pool Party’

For the seventh year running, Roosevelt Island's waterfront rental building Manhattan Park has hired a local artist to transform its pool deck into a colorful art installation and "Pop-Up Pool Party." This year's mural comes from Brooklyn-based Melissa Dadourian, who created a technicolor geometric pattern over four-and-a-half days, using 36 gallons of paint. Though the pool is primarily for building residents, a number of seasonal memberships and day passes are available.

After most Fourth of July festivities were canceled or scaled-down in 2020 because of the pandemic, New Yorkers are more than ready to celebrate this year. With Macy's annual 4th of July Fireworks show taking over the East River and Jersey City's massive display sparkling over the Hudson River, there are plenty of places to take in the magic of pyrotechnics across New York City and the Jersey waterfront. To ring in Independence Day, we've rounded up the best places hosting firework viewing parties, from the highest observation deck in the Western Hemisphere to a cruise ship sailing around the Hudson River. In addition to these ticketed events, there are also several free public viewing locations, including elevated portions of FDR Drive in Manhattan.

NYC agency approves removal of racist Theodore Roosevelt statue at AMNH

The New York City Public Design Commission on Monday approved plans to remove and relocate the Theodore Roosevelt statue from the steps of the American Museum of Natural History, about a year after officials called for the controversial sculpture to be taken down. The city's Parks Department and AMNH presented their proposal last week to the Landmarks Preservation Commission, but the agency was unable to reach a decision. On Monday, The PDC voted unanimously to remove and relocate the statue to a relevant cultural institution.

Graduate Roosevelt Island rises 18 stories, contains 224 rooms, and boasts incredible views of the Manhattan skyline, Queensboro Bridge, and beyond. The hotel aims to offer a "scholastic retreat" for the Cornell community and New York City visitors, with playful touches like a 12-foot statue of artist Hebru Brantley's Flyboy in the lobby and neon light fixtures inspired by a Cornell science project in the guest rooms. There's also a ground-level restaurant and an indoor-outdoor rooftop bar and lounge.

2021 U.S. Open will welcome back fans at 100% capacity

The U.S. Open this year will allow spectators at 100 percent capacity throughout the two-week tournament in Queens, a year after fans could not attend the event because of the pandemic. The U.S. Tennis Association (USTA) announced on Thursday that tickets for the general public will go on sale starting July 15, with an early access presale for select American Express card members.

France is sending Lady Liberty’s ‘little sister’ to NYC for July 4

France is sending a mini version of the Statue of Liberty to the United States this month, 136 years after the iconic sculpture was unveiled on Liberty Island. The Embassy of France in the U.S., the Conservatoire national des arts et métiers, and shipping company CMA CGM Group announced last week that a replica of Lady Liberty will set sail from Paris on a nine-day journey across the Atlantic, arriving in New York City in time for the Fourth of July.

After a downsized celebration last year because of the pandemic, the Macy's annual 4th of July Fireworks show is "back and literally better than ever," Mayor Bill de Blasio announced on Thursday. Viewable from the New York and New Jersey waterfronts, a July 4th fireworks display will return to the Hudson River this year. Jersey City Mayor Steven Fulop made the announcement that the Freedom and Fireworks event will take place after being canceled in 2020 due to Covid. "Since we revived Jersey City’s Fourth of July event in 2013, we’ve become a destination for the annual celebration, and I think it’s important to restore those traditions for residents and visitors to have something to look forward to," said Mayor Fulop.

Paris’ famous Pompidou Center will open its first North American outpost in Jersey City

When The Centre Pompidou (Pompidou Center in English) opened in Paris in 1977, it was the first collection of modern and contemporary art in Europe. Famous as much for its inside-out building designed by Renzo Piano as for its artwork, the museum has in recent years opened satellite locations in Málaga, Spain, Brussels, and Shanghai. And come 2024, they'll open their first North American outpost in Jersey City. Broadway is back, even earlier than planned. The Lincoln Center Theater on Tuesday announced that Pass Over, a play produced by Antoinette Chinonye Nwandu and Danya Taymor, will begin previews on August 4, over a month ahead of the expected reopening date for performances. Pass Over will become the first Broadway show to hold performances since the coronavirus pandemic forced all 41 theaters to close on March 12, 2020.
