City Winery to open flagship venue at Pier 57 this week

The massive new flagship of entertainment venue and restaurant City Winery will open this week at Hudson River Park's Pier 57. Starting October 15, the restaurant will accept reservations for limited capacity indoor and outdoor dining, with 200 seats available inside and 70 seats outside. City Winery was forced to move from its longtime Varick Street location last year after the Walt Disney Company purchased the property with plans to open new production space and offices there.

New condo at East Village gas explosion site launches sales from $1.35M

It's been five-and-a-half years since the buildings at 119, 121, and 123 Second Avenue were destroyed in a deadly gas explosion caused by an illegal tap into the gas main. The corner site at 45 East 7th Street now has a new life as a boutique condo by architect Morris Adjmi who, in his firm's trademark, designed a building sympathetic to its surroundings. Dubbed No45e7, the 21-unit East Village building just launched sales, which range from $1.35 million one-bedrooms to $4 million two- and three-bedrooms, along with an $8.3 million penthouse. 300-unit affordable and supportive housing development coming to Flatbush, Brooklyn

As part of his larger plan to invest $1.4 billion in Central Brooklyn communities, Governor Cuomo unveiled this week a 291-unit affordable housing development in Flatbush. Called the Clarkson Estates, the project will have half of its apartments set aside for "youth aging out of foster care, formerly incarcerated individuals, and formerly homeless young adults," according to a press release. Developer CAMBA Housing Ventures will offer an extensive network of supportive services within a 30,000-square-foot space that the building is calling its "HUB." Many of these facilities will also be open to the public.

Crown Heights residents rally against proposed 182-unit complex at site of 19th-century senior home

The fight continues over a proposed new development on a large stretch of land in the Crown Heights North Historic District II with an online petition opposing the project collecting over 4,000 signatures. A neighborhood group, Friends of 920 Park, hopes to stop the construction of a seven-story, 182-unit apartment building on land at 959 Sterling Place (920 Park Place), originally the site of the Methodist Home for the Aged and currently the home of the Hebron French Speaking Seventh Day Adventist School. The renewed fight against the project comes ahead of a Brooklyn Community Board 8 and Landmarks Preservation Commission public hearing on the plan later this summer.

An eight-story monarch butterfly sanctuary may be the façade of a new Nolita building

Architecture and urban design research group Terreform ONE has offered a proposal for a 12-story commercial building in the works across from Petrosino Square in Nolita that goes beyond any of the city's existing architectural curveballs, angles, and anomalies. The non-profit group has revealed plans to create an eight-story-high monarch butterfly sanctuary, or "Lepidoptera terrarium," that would serve as the building's façade and line its atrium.
