From neglected mud patch to outdoor oasis, a Brooklyn backyard gets a garden makeover

After a top-to-toe renovation of their 1870s Clinton Hill two-family townhouse that spanned two years (read all about it here), 6sqft writer Michelle Cohen and her husband, Stanley Peck, decided to relegate sprucing up their brownstone backyard to “phase 2.” They’d already added a rear terrace with steps to the yard and created a small roof deck above their lower extension. The couple certainly planned to address the neglected outdoor space–even though the existing weed-jungle-meets-mud-patch had a certain overgrown charm. A home that is one part of the sprawling New Jersey estate built by the Straus Family, the owners of Macy's, is now available. Located in Red Bank at 310 Cooper Road, Cobble Close Farm is a 13-acre estate with French Norman-style buildings, including several residences. The estate was built in the 1920s by Herbert Nathan Straus and his wife Therese Kuhn Straus; Herbert's father was Isidor Straus, the co-owner of Macy's who died on the Titanic. A 4,500-square-foot co-op on the property recently hit the market for $2,645,000, which includes an additional apartment and shared ownership of the historic farm.

Some of New York City's most popular restaurants have partnered with Resy and American Express Gold for an exclusive two-night drive-through dining event in Brooklyn, no car required. Hosted at Greenpoint's Skyline Drive-in, the "Resy Drive-Thru New York" event includes a 10-course tasting menu from 10 hard-to-book NYC restaurants, like Bonnie's in Williamsburg and Crown Shy at city landmark 70 Pine Street. Guests will be chauffeured via golf cart through a "labyrinth of restaurants and entertainment built on the Brooklyn waterfront." The event takes place on September 16 and 17; tickets go on sale for the general public on August 17.

Here are Manhattan’s 10 best-selling residential buildings in Q2 2022

The second quarter of 2022 is expected to be Manhattan's strongest on record due to a surge in the borough's ultraluxury market, according to a market report from CityRealty. While transaction volume decreased 11 percent year-over-year, an increased demand, low inventory, and a small number of new residential developments have caused prices to rise. Between April and June, the average sales price for a residential unit in Manhattan was $2.19 million, up 9 percent from its $2 million average in Q2 of 2021. Two tudor-filled areas in Queens’ Cambria Heights designated as historic districts

The Landmarks Preservation Commission (LPC) on Tuesday voted to designate two districts in the Queens neighborhood of Cambria Heights as historic districts. The two areas, known as the 222nd Street and 227th Street Historic Districts, contain 96 well-maintained Tudor-style rowhouses that incorporate Storybook design elements. Both historic districts have been deemed by the LPC to be extraordinarily well-preserved and give the area a "highly distinctive sense of place."

Broadway will drop mask mandate for month of July

Masks will no longer be required at all of Broadway's 41 theaters next month, the Broadway League announced Tuesday. Starting July 1, masks will be optional for audiences at shows. The League said masking protocols for August and beyond will be reviewed on a monthly basis, with an updated decision made in mid-July. While masks will not be required, audience members are still encouraged to wear them.
