The 2021 Village Halloween Parade is officially back on

The Village Halloween Parade is officially back this year thanks to a major donation. The beloved event was scheduled to return after a pandemic-related hiatus, but a lack of funds threatened to cancel the 2021 parade, according to organizers. The parade set a fundraising goal of $150,000 by October 5, and with the help of 183 donors who contributed over $11,000 and Jason Feldman and his wife Missy who made up the difference, the spooky show will go on.

Zig-zagging office tower in Greenwich Village’s ‘Silicon Alley’ nabe nears completion

The new modern office building that replaced the St. Denis Hotel in Greenwich Village is nearing completion. The ground-up development 799 Broadway sits where the Village and Union Square meet, a burgeoning tech hub known as "Silicon Alley." As a majority of construction work on the building wraps up in the coming weeks, Columbia Property Trust, Inc. announced on Monday it has secured its first lease at the building.

Artist William Wegman is best known for his fantastical photos of his Weimaraner dogs, which were even turned into a series of murals at the 23rd Street F, M subway station. Early in his career, he bought the East Village building at 431 East 6th Street, a former synagogue, turning it into his studio and residence. In 1996, he sold it to poet Paola Igliori, and other owners over the years have included artist Jack Sal, curator Cay Sophie Rabinowitz, and documentary filmmaker Timothy Greenfield-Sanders. Now, the very unique space is looking for a new artist-in-residence. The main-floor duplex is being sold for $2,749,000 or along with the street-level art gallery for $5,495,000.

Olivier Sarkozy’s historic Turtle Bay townhouse comes back on the market for $11.5M

Olivier Sarkozy, banker and half-brother of former French President Nicolas Sarkozy, has listed his Turtle Bay Gardens townhouse for $11,500,000, as the New York Times first reported. Sarkozy's five-year marriage to Mary-Kate Olsen ended earlier this year, and according to Vanity Fair, the "sticking point" of the divorce was this house. That's not really surprising, considering the home at 226 East 49th Street is a whopping 8,700 square feet and has historic and opulent features such as a grand ballroom, 22-foot coffered ceilings, and backyard art studio. Sarkozy bought the house in 2014 for $13.5 million from painter David Deutsch.

NYC’s famous skinny house hits the market for $5M in Greenwich Village

The townhouse at 75 1/2 Bedford Street has long been known as the narrowest home in all of New York City. The Greenwich Village house is just 9-feet-6-inches wide, and though some accounts say there are actually a couple skinnier buildings, this is the one that's become famous. It's also in part because Edna St. Vincent Millay lived here in the 1920s. Now, this truly unique home, which was built in 1873 in the Dutch style, has hit the market for $4,990,000. And despite its slender frame, it offers three bedrooms, two balconies, a rear patio, and a finished basement.

East Village home and art studio of late abstract painter Jay Rosenblum hits the market for $4M

Abstract expressionist artist Jay Rosenblum moved into this East Village townhouse at 502 East 11th Street 50 years ago, setting up his studio in the skylit space on the top floor. Though he passed away in 1989 at age 55 from a bike accident (his wife Muriel passed away in September), the home is owned by his daughters, Julia Crane and Maria Rosenblum, according to Mansion Global. Now, for the first time in five decades, they've put the home, which they call "Bohemian rhapsody" for its 1960s/70s vibes, on the market for $3,995,000. Built in 1836, the 4,000-square-foot townhouse is the oldest on the block and is configured as four apartments.

The history of Central Park’s Hooverville, the Great Depression shanty town

Following the October stock market crash of 1929, there was an unprecedented number of people in the U.S. without homes or jobs. And as the Great Depression set in, demand grew and the overflow became far too overwhelming and unmanageable for government resources to manage. Homeless people in large cities began to build their own houses out of found materials, and some even built more permanent structures from brick. Small shanty towns—later named Hoovervilles after President Hoover—began to spring up in vacant lots, public land and empty alleys. Three of these pop-up villages were located in New York City, the largest of which was on what is now Central Park's Great Lawn.

Former NAACP headquarters in Greenwich Village is now a New York City landmark

A building in Greenwich Village that once served as the headquarters for the National Association for the Advancement of Colored People (NAACP) and housed W.E.B. DuBois' trailblazing magazine The Crisis, is now a New York City landmark. The Landmarks Preservation Commission on Tuesday voted to designate 70 Fifth Avenue, a Neoclassical Beaux-Arts building designed by Charles A. Rich and built between 1912 and 1914. The commission on Tuesday also landmarked the Holyrood Episcopal Church-Iglesia Santa Cruz in Washington Heights.

170-year-old Greenwich Village buildings will be razed and replaced with high-rise condo tower

Two five-story apartment buildings in the Greenwich Village Historic District will be demolished to make way for a 213-foot-tall luxury condo tower. The Landmarks Preservation Commission on Tuesday approved plans from Madison Realty Capital and City Urban Realty to raze 14-16 Fifth Avenue, an apartment building that sits just north of Washington Square Park. Preservationists campaigned against the demolition of the building since the project was first announced in 2017, citing the history of the 170-year-old structure as significant enough for protection.

Wing Hing Seafood Restaurant, 46 Mott St., Grand Tea & Imports, 886--these are just a few of the restaurants featured in the new digital cookbook Around the Roundtable: Recipes for Chinatown Favorites that was created to support Chinatown businesses. The free, downloadable cookbook comes from Send Chinatown Love, an entirely volunteer-run organization whose goal is to provide relief to small, immigrant-owned Chinatown businesses impacted by the effects of Covid-19.

Transformative East Village drag nightclub Pyramid Club closes for good

After 42 years, the East Village's legendary Pyramid Club has closed permanently, as was first reported by EV Grieve. The club at 101 Avenue A is "credited with creating the East Village drag and gay scenes of the 1980s, launching a new politically-conscious form of drag performance art in the early 1980s," according to Andrew Berman of Village Preservation, and is the place where celebrated performers such as Lady Bunny and RuPaul got their start. The Pyramid Club has remained closed since the pandemic began, as nightclubs were never permitted to reopen until now, but the burden of the past year made the owners decide to shut down for good.
