The NYC Marathon: history, greatest moments, and what to expect this year

The world's largest marathon takes place this Sunday, returning to the five boroughs after a pandemic hiatus last year. On November 7, the 50th New York City Marathon will look slightly different this year, bringing together roughly 33,000 runners, which is about 20,000 fewer participants than usual because of Covid-19. The marathon wasn't always the largest in the world, however. Started by the New York Road Runners Club in 1970, the race began as a few loops around Central Park with just over 100 runners. But the passion of its founders, coupled with the spirit of the city, grew the marathon into a monumental event. In honor of the upcoming 2021 Marathon, 6sqft is taking a look back at the history of the race, its greatest moments, and what's in store for this year.

Located on the fourth floor of 22 Pierrepont Street, the three-bedroom home is asking $2.59 million. DeRosa jointly owns the apartment with her husband Matthew Wing, but, as the New York Post first reported, the couple recently split.

NYC commits $170M to preserve Chinatown’s historic 70 Mulberry Street after fire

The city will nearly double its investment in the restoration of a historic Chinatown building that was destroyed in a fire last year, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced Tuesday. After committing $80 million last July to the rebuilding of 70 Mulberry Street, a former public school constructed in the 1890s, the mayor said the city will tack on another $90 million, for a total of $170 million. In January 2020, a fire significantly damaged the site, forcing out five nonprofit organizations. According to the city, all of the groups will be welcomed back as tenants.

The current record holder is 504 Hudson Street, which sold for $6.5 million back in 2016. This new contender was gut renovated in 2017, leaving the main home with 5,600 square feet of stunningly beautiful space, six bedrooms, an elevator, and a roof deck. Notably, the property also has a separate carriage house with a loft apartment, as well as a private two-car garage, which, if you know anything about parking in Hoboken, is the biggest selling point of all.

Though Labor Day has been embraced as a national holiday--albeit one many Americans don't know the history of--it originated right here in New York City as a result of the city's labor unions fighting for workers' rights throughout the 1800s. The event was first observed, unofficially, on Tuesday, September 5th, 1882, with thousands marching from City Hall up to Union Square. At the time, the New York Times considered the event to be unremarkable. But 138 years later, we celebrate Labor Day on the first Monday of every September as a tribute to all American workers. It's also a good opportunity to recognize the hard-won accomplishments of New York unions to secure a better workplace for us today.

The apartments, which are available to those earning 130 percent of the area median income, include $2,431/month studios, $2,592/month one-bedrooms, and $3,090/month two-bedrooms. By comparison, market-rate units in the building start around $3,000/month for studios and $4,800/month for two-bedrooms. The boutique building is located at 26 Quincy Street and offers tenants an on-site gym, rooftop, covered parking, and laundry in each unit.

The 10,000-square-foot mansion is known as the Pfizer mansion as it was built in 1887 for Charles Erhart, co-founder of the Pfizer pharmaceutical company and brother-in-law to Charles Pfizer. A housing lottery opened this week for about a dozen apartments in Brooklyn's charming Clinton Hill neighborhood. Located at 445 Vanderbilt Avenue, the development is part of a larger complex that also includes seven three-story townhouses currently under construction on the other side of the property. The "affordable" units available through the housing lottery don't provide much of a discount, with apartments set aside for New Yorkers earning 130 percent of the area median income. Units include three $2,431/month studios, $2,592/month one-bedrooms, and $3,090/month two-bedrooms. The current median rental price in the neighborhood is $2,825/month, according to data from CityRealty.
