See billionaire Bill Ackman’s plan for a glass house atop a historic UWS building

A plan funded by one of the world's wealthiest people and designed by one of the world's most famous architects still can't get approved in New York City. Billionaire Bill Ackman on Tuesday presented to the Landmarks Preservation Commission his plan to construct a new glass penthouse addition designed by Norman Foster on top of a 100-year-old Upper West Side co-op building where he owns an apartment. After hours-long public testimony, LPC Chair Sarah Carroll sent Ackman and his team back to the drawing board, calling for a scaled-down design.

8 income-restricted Upper West Side apartments available to buy for under $315K

Eight income-restricted condos on the Upper West Side are available for purchase for under $315,000 as part of two housing lotteries that launched last week. Located at 107 West 105th Street and 981 Amsterdam Avenue, the apartments are Housing Development Fund Corporation (HDFC) co-ops, which means they are priced below market rate and designated for New Yorkers with certain household incomes. Qualifying New Yorkers earning 110 percent of the area median income, or between $88,500 and $141,790 annually, can apply for the available two-bedroom apartments.

Ben Stiller’s childhood home on the Upper West Side is for sale after more than 50 years

The long-time Upper West Side home of the late comedy duo Jerry Stiller and Anne Meara has hit the market for the first time in more than 50 years, the New York Times first reported. The expanded co-op at 118 Riverside Drive is where they raised their children, actors Amy Stiller and Ben Stiller, as well as "wrote and collaborated on material and entertained a host of celebrities," according to the Times. Stiller and Meara moved from Washington Heights into unit 5A in 1965 when the building was a rental (they paid $220/month) and purchased it when the building went co-op a few years later. In the early '80s, they also bought unit 5B and combined them into the five-bedroom home that is now listed for $5 million.

‘Running of the Goats’ returns to Riverside Park next week

Next week, 24 weed-eating goats will return to Riverside Park. On Wednesday, July 14, the animals will arrive for the Riverside Park Conservancy's second-ever "Running of the Goats," where the public can see them run from their truck to a weed-filled hill at 120th Street. Five of the goats will then remain for the duration of the summer and campaign to be the G.O.A.T., for which the public can vote-the-GOAT using a "new and heretofore untested ranked-choice voting system."

New-York Historical Society expansion includes a home for the American L.G.B.T.Q.+ Museum

The New-York Historical Society, the oldest museum in the city, recently unveiled to the Landmarks Preservation Commission plans to expand by more than 70,000 square feet with a five-story extension at the rear of its Upper West Side lot. The $140 million expansion will be designed by architect Robert A.M. Stern and include additional classrooms and gallery space, as well as a permanent home for the American L.G.B.T.Q.+ Museum, the city's first museum dedicated to L.G.B.T.Q. history and culture, as the New York Times first reported.

NYC agency approves removal of racist Theodore Roosevelt statue at AMNH

The New York City Public Design Commission on Monday approved plans to remove and relocate the Theodore Roosevelt statue from the steps of the American Museum of Natural History, about a year after officials called for the controversial sculpture to be taken down. The city's Parks Department and AMNH presented their proposal last week to the Landmarks Preservation Commission, but the agency was unable to reach a decision. On Monday, The PDC voted unanimously to remove and relocate the statue to a relevant cultural institution.

$90M project to renovate deteriorating docks at 79th Street Boat Basin moves ahead

The city is moving forward on restoring the Upper West Side's 79th Street Boat Basin as a waterfront resource for the community. In December 2019, the Parks Department unveiled a $90 million proposal to reconstruct docks damaged by previous storms, add additional boating berths to increase capacity, make the area more resilient to climate change, and expand ecological research and education. To make this possible, the entire marina will be dredged to enable vessels to navigate it at all tidal cycles. With support from the local Community Board and many residents, the plan is now moving ahead, with construction expected to commence in 2023.

The Lincoln Center's famed Josie Robertson Plaza has been transformed into a huge green space for the public. Designed by set designer Mimi Lien, the public installation, called "The Green" officially opened on Monday as a place for New Yorkers to lounge, borrow a book from the New York Public Library, and even enjoy pop-up performances hosted by the institution. The Green is the centerpiece of Lincoln Center's "Restart Stages" initiative, which converted the 16-acre campus into 10 new outdoor performance venues last month.

$348M restoration of Riverside Park is part of largest investment in 90 years

The city announced this week plans to provide $348 million in funding for the rehabilitation of major infrastructure in Riverside Park, marking one of the largest investments at the waterfront park since the 1930s. The project restores the "overbuild," a series of bridge structures built over the Amtrak tunnels between West 72nd and West 123rd Streets. The deteriorated structure has damaged pathways and affected the park's usability, according to the city.

Vaccine hub opening at Museum of Natural History with slots set aside for cultural institution workers

Mayor de Blasio made the announcement in a press conference this morning, noting that "literally you can get vaccinated below the blue whale," who is now sporting a giant bandaid. In a show of support, the Museum will give complimentary general admission on a future visit for a group of four to anyone who receives their vaccine at the site.
