John McEnroe gets another grand slam, sells Southampton beach estate for $11.25M

July 20, 2017

We can’t imagine he’ll be having any public outbursts over the $7 million profit he just made on his Southampton estate. The Observer reports that confrontational tennis legend John McEnroe, along with his wife, musician Patty Smyth, has sold his beach-front house for $11.25 million, 18 years after buying it for $4.2 million. Not surprisingly, the home on Squabble Lane (how’s that for ironic?) has a full-size Har-Tru tennis court and a gym, as well as a heated pool, private beach access, and the 8,000-square-foot mansion.

Built in 1986, the gated home sits on 2.17 acres in the exclusive Murray Compound. This private waterfront enclave is right near the Meadow Club’s renowned tennis facility, as well as the Southampton Bathing Corp., a members-only beach club, the Shinnecock Golf Club, the oldest private 18-hole course in the country, and the charming Southampton Village.

As the Observer notes, the home would perhaps benefit from “an interior renovation or redesign,” as the kitchen is a bit bland and the living room, although it has good bones like vaulted ceilings and a fireplace, is a bit dated.

There’s also a library with a wet bar, an office, and a sunroom off the pool.

The master suite has two separate bathrooms, a large dressing room, and French doors that open to a balcony.

There are seven other bedrooms, several of which also have French doors leading outside.

McEnroe and Smyth first listed the property for $14.5 million in May of 2016 but lowered the price to $12.5 million in October. It’s not known if they’re searching for another Hamptons home, but they do own three properties in Malibu.
