Lottery opens for 63 affordable units at former Bushwick convent, starting at $519/month

January 3, 2017

All the way back in 2012, the Ridgewood Bushwick Senior Citizens Council and developer Georgica Green announced plans to redevelop Bushwick‘s former Our Lady of Lourdes convent into affordable and supportive housing, and now, nearly five years later, the lottery has opened for 63 brand new units at the site. The available apartments are reserved for those earning 40, 50, 60, or 80 percent of the area media income and range from $519/month studios to $1,740/month three-bedrooms.

The $30 million project consists of a new, eight-story building at 1875 Broadway with 18 apartments and community facility space, along with a revamp of the former convent at 11 and 21 De Sales Place. The latter included an expansion of the building from four stories to six, adding 58 apartments and more community facility space on the ground-floor. This expansion, as Yimby previously explained, was basically a new building, shown in the rending above to the right of the middle red brick convent.

Amenities at the site include bike storage, laundry, an outdoor playground, shared tenant community room, and some on-site parking. It’s less than one block away from the Bushwick Avenue-Aberdeen Street L stop and two blocks from the J and Z trains at Broadway Junction. It’s also just two blocks from Forest Park.

Qualifying New Yorkers can apply for the affordable units starting tomorrow until March 8, 2017. Residents of Brooklyn Community Board 4 will be given preference for 50 percent of the units. Complete details on how to apply are available here (pdf). Questions regarding this offer must be referred to NYC’s Housing Connect department by dialing 311.
