New York’s 2022 fall foliage map has arrived

New York State has begun its colorful transformation into fall. The first signs of autumn can already be seen in the Adirondacks, with the rest of the state to soon follow suit. To help New Yorkers follow the cycle of foliage, the state released this week its annual Fall Foliage Report. The interactive map is updated weekly using observations and reports from a state-wide group of volunteers known as "leaf peepers," as 6sqft previously reported.

A housing lottery opened this week for 129 affordable apartments at a new energy-efficient residential development in East New York. Located at 573 Emerald Street, the development is the second phase of the affordable and supportive multi-building housing project Linden Terrace. New Yorkers earning 30, 50, 60, and 70 percent of the area median income, or between $16,183 for a single person and $115,850 for a household of seven, can apply for the apartments, which range from $397/month for studios to $1,865/month three bedrooms.

Located at 2 Mount Hope Place in Morris Heights, the 11-story apartment building offers residents affordable units and a variety of amenities. New Yorkers earning 40, 60, 90, and 130 percent of the area median income, or between $21,738 for a single person and $215,150 for a household of seven, can apply for the apartments, which range from $545/month for studios to $2,500/month for three bedrooms.

The penthouse at One Brooklyn Bridge Park at 360 Furman Street owned by Elizabeth Stribling, founder of real estate firm Stribling & Associates, which was sold to Compass in 2019, is for sale for $8,500,000. The Brooklyn Heights condo–a combination of two units adding up to 3,440 square feet–is wrapped on all sides by a terrace and blessed with 360-degree views of New York Harbor, the Manhattan skyline, and the Statue of Liberty. As the Wall Street Journal reports, the home's current owner is a devoted Francophile; French inspirations and old-world European style can be found throughout the home, including salvaged antique French oak herringbone floors, heavy wooden pocket doors, fossilized marble fireplace mantles, a Lacanche range, custom millwork, and a powder room sink inspired by the milk basin in the Palace of Versailles.

NYC receives $7M federal grant to expand greenway network in underserved communities

New York City received a $7.25 million federal grant that will be put towards the expansion of the city's greenway network, Mayor Eric Adams announced Monday. The expansion aims to improve the greenway network's reach in historically underserved, lower-income neighborhoods that lack access to public transportation and jobs by filling in "critical gaps" in the network, improving cyclist and pedestrian safety, and enhancing green transportation alternatives and waterfront access.

Donald Trump’s former Connecticut estate tries again for $29.9M, nearly half its highest listing price

The six-acre estate on the Greenwich, Connecticut, waterfront that was owned by former president Donald Trump and his late ex-wife Ivana in the 1980s is back on the market for $29.9 million, the Wall Street Journal reports. The home's present owners, investment banker Robert Steinberg and his wife Suzanne, bought it for $15 million in 1998. The Georgian mansion at 21 Vista Drive, with sweeping views of Long Island Sound, has been on and off the market since 2009 when the Steinbergs listed it for $50 million; it was relisted for $54 million in 2014. As 6sqft previously reported, it has seen several price cuts since then, but no takers.

New Yorkers earning 130 percent of the area median income, or between $72,000 for a single person and $187,330 for a household of five, can apply for the apartments, priced at $2,100/month for one-bedroom apartments and $2,500/month for two bedrooms.

Experience a 10-course ‘drive-thru’ tasting menu from some of NYC’s best restaurants next month

Some of New York City's most popular restaurants have partnered with Resy and American Express Gold for an exclusive two-night drive-through dining event in Brooklyn, no car required. Hosted at Greenpoint's Skyline Drive-in, the "Resy Drive-Thru New York" event includes a 10-course tasting menu from 10 hard-to-book NYC restaurants, like Bonnie's in Williamsburg and Crown Shy at city landmark 70 Pine Street. Guests will be chauffeured via golf cart through a "labyrinth of restaurants and entertainment built on the Brooklyn waterfront." The event takes place on September 16 and 17; tickets go on sale for the general public on August 17.

Newark Penn Station is set to undergo a major renovation and NJ Transit wants feedback from riders who travel through the historic terminal. The transit agency will host three virtual public meetings about the $191 million restoration, with the first scheduled for August 9. First introduced by Gov. Phil Murphy in 2020, the project includes immediate aesthetic improvements and refurbishment of historic elements, as well as longer-term upgrades to the overall customer experience.

Iconic New York Harbor sailing experience returns to the Seaport after 9 years

After a nine-year hiatus, the Howard Hughes Corporation on Friday announced the return of Manhattan by Sail to Pier 17. Clipper City Tall Ship, its newly-renovated sailboat that will offer daily specialty sails and private charters, will launch this month. Departing from the east side of Pier 17 at 89 South Street, Clipper City will operate seven days a week, taking four trips a day with an additional late-night departure at 10 p.m.

Yankee legend Lou Gehrig’s former New Rochelle home is back on the market for $1.5M

José Andrés’ ThinkFoodGroup on Tuesday opened Zaytinya, a new restaurant and hotel in-room dining option at The Ritz-Carlton New York, Nomad. The restaurant features a mezze menu inspired by Turkish, Greek, and Lebanese cuisines in a 140-seat street-level restaurant with a mod-meets Mediterranean interior design courtesy of David Rockwell's Rockwell Group. The Nomad location will be the second for Zaytinya, which first opened in 2002 in Washington, DC.

New underwater habitat with 20 million juvenile oysters deployed at NYC’s Gansevoort Peninsula

A new man-made underwater habitat with 20 million juvenile oysters was installed along the northern shore of Gansevoort Peninsula in the Hudson River this week. As part of a major project to restore and protect Hudson River Park's 400-acre Estuarine Sanctuary, the reef-like system includes hundreds of submerged "reef balls" and "gabions" seeded with baby oysters. Ultimately, the project aims to create an oyster reef complex, improve habitats for organisms found in the river, and help mitigate the effect of storm surges.

Construction kicked off on the second phase of Sunset Cove Park, a Jamaica Bay-facing city park in the Queens neighborhood of Broad Channel, NYC Parks announced on Wednesday. After partially opening in 2019, the park's $4.2 million second phase includes a new covered outdoor classroom and a boardwalk made up of reclaimed wood from the Rockaway Boardwalk, which was destroyed during Hurricane Sandy in 2012.
