Dozens of New York City parks will glow with holiday displays this year, bringing some much-needed cheer to all five boroughs. The city's Parks Department last week released an interactive map that marks all of the menorah and Christmas tree lightings at parks and administrative buildings in the city by borough. The agency is encouraging New Yorkers to stay local and enjoy the illuminated green spaces in their neighborhoods.

A former toxic landfill in Jersey City will become a public park with a memorial dedicated to residents who lost their lives from the coronavirus. Mayor Steven Fulop last week unveiled the final $10 million phase of the plan to transform the Superfund site into Skyway Park, 30 acres of green space with both passive and active uses, waterfront access, a butterfly garden, and a memorial grove that will contain more than 500 trees, each representing a Jersey City resident who died earlier this year and who were not permitted a proper funeral because of COVID-19 restrictions.

The Landmarks Preservation Commission on Tuesday voted to landmark a section of the Brooklyn neighborhood on East 25th Street between Clarendon Road and Avenue D, home to 56 cohesive limestone and brownstone properties. As 6sqft previously reported, local residents led the landmarking effort of the block, which has been named the "greenest block in Brooklyn" by the Brooklyn Botanic Garden four times.

In the Tremont section of the Bronx, just south of Little Italy and just west of the Bronx Zoo and Botanical Garden, a new affordable senior housing complex has launched a lottery for 122 units. Located at 600 East 179th Street, the 176-unit building was designed by SLCE Architects and features environmentally friendly features such as two large terraces and a rear garden, including both indoor and outdoor vegetable gardens, and a green wall. The available apartments include studios and one-bedrooms for those earning 30 or 50 percent of the area median income, who will pay 30 percent of their income on rent.
