28th Street 4, 6 station to close through December, and more weekend subway madness

Next week will start with the closure of yet another station for "enhancements." This time, the 28th Street 4, 6 station will be the one to close, through December, while it is "enhanced". Additional bad news this week is that even alternate shuttle buses now have service changes, apparently, with crane operations requiring eastbound 4 shuttle buses to reroute and run via Riverdale Avenue instead of from Livonia Avenue to Thomas S. Boyland Avenue. Also, for those who missed the initial news: the A isn't running to Far Rockaway-Mott Av, and the Rockaway Park Shuttle isn't servicing Broad Channel through September.

Beachgoers, beware: there aren't any A trains running to Far Rockaway-Mott Av, nor Rockaway Park Shuttle service at Broad Channel, through the end of the summer. Some seriously poor timing on the MTA's part, but the agency has never been known for greatness or awareness. As well, a slew of stations remain closed in Manhattan on the A, C and B lines and new this weekend, an elevator is being installed at the 62nd Street/New Utrecht Av D, N station, causing the closure of its transfer passageway through August. Beginning 5am Monday, the 57th Street F station will also close, through December.
There are of course plenty of temporary service changes as well

The 2 and 3 are finally running between Brooklyn and Manhattan on weekends again, but now two stations are closing (as two others reopen) in Astoria, and the 1 train has a slew of disruptive service changes planned at least for this weekend. Everything pales with the hell set for Rockaway residents this summer, as the A and Rockaway Park Shuttle won't be connecting the beach to the mainland again until September.

The regular slew of service changes awaits straphangers this weekend, but one longtime inconvenience will be coming to an end this Sunday: weekend 2 and 3 service between Brooklyn and Manhattan will resume at last. For 4 and G train riders, though, the weekend will be a particularly inconvenient one.

It’s the end of an era but one that might not be too sentimental. As of May 2019, the MTA is launching its new fare payment method for the 4, 5, and 6 lines and all bus routes on Staten Island, reports amNY. No more steel bars karate chopping your abdomen when you realize your MetroCard is out of credit. Starting next spring, riders can use credit cards, mobile phones, smart watches, and mobile wallets to travel... but you'll still be able to swipe your old MetroCard until 2023.

For the second week in the row, the incumbent late night weekday service changes are arguably worse than those on the weekend. The Q and S alone are the only lines without set service changes, and who knows what kind of signal delays might change even that small bit of reassurance.

Many Memorial Day weekend subway service changes will continue into the week

This week was a big one for the MTA, with NYC Transit President Andy Byford releasing the Fast Forward plan, with 10 years worth of road map for necessary modernizations to be made to the subway system, as well as an announcement that subway service will possibly be increased during off-peak, weekday hours beginning in November along the A, D, E and F lines. Much more immediately, many of this weekend's subway service changes will extend into Monday and early Tuesday due to Memorial Day and the long weekend.

Get ready for more debilitating than usual weekend subway service changes

The MTA has finally announced when normal weekend service will resume along the 2 and 3 lines, which have not been running between Brooklyn and Manhattan on Saturdays and Sundays for months: Sunday, June 24 at 12:01 a.m. Until then, though, it's tough luck if you need to get to the Park Place, Wall Street, Clark Street, and/or Hoyt Street stops on the weekend. In other news, the MTA has begun inexplicably including borough names in service change descriptions to offer unnecessary specificity even when the station, such as Howard Beach-JFK, only exists in one borough and is well-known.

72nd Street B, C station to close through the fall and other weekend service changes

This weekend, the MTA is closing the first of what it specifies are "two non-adjacent subway stations" (a desperate grovel for mercy from public critique, that specification), 72nd Street and 86th Street on the B, C line. The 86th Street station will not close until June 4, and neither station will reopen until late October. Meanwhile, the usual slew of weekend service changes also awaits straphangers. The good news is that Manhattan-bound J and Z service has been restored at 104th Street. The bad news is the usual slew of weekend service changes, in addition to a number of longer-term station closures. Rockaway remains without shuttle service at Broad Channel, the 2 and 3 are still not going between Brooklyn and Manhattan on weekends, and this weekend, G trains are also offering straphangers less service than usual.

Two stations to close for the long term this weekend and other service changes

To add insult to injury, even the MTA's Weekender offered poor service regarding the subway's poor service this weekend, with more than usual repetitive data points, errors, and redundant information. Other bad news outside of this weekend's temporary subway changes is two more long-term ones: The Cathedral Park station will start being skipped in both directions by A, B and C trains through September and the Rockaway Park Shuttle will cease servicing Broad Channel until May. Additionally there are a number of other significant service changes this weekend, especially for 2, 3, 5, A, C and 7 riders.

As a nor'easter wreaks havoc above ground this weekend, the MTA will be causing chaos in the subway below with a slew of service changes. The C train will be taking a break from running Saturday night on and the 7 won't be running between Manhattan and Queens. G service is restricted with service coming in two parts, and Roosevelt Island – which has but a single subway station – will be left with no subway service whatsoever as the Roosevelt Island F train station spends the weekend closed for "electrical improvements".

The subways are a mess this weekend, with track replacement, electrical and structural improvements, and track maintenance wreaking havoc on service citywide – not that straphangers would expect anything better. Particularly detrimental this weekend is that the 3 is once again not running and 7 train service will be severely limited. The W train will be coming out of its usual weekend hibernation for some "special service" operating between Whitehall St and Ditmars Blvd.

MTA serves up debilitating service change schedule this long weekend

Monday is a Federal Holiday, President's Day, and the MTA has both a trick and a treat planned for the long weekend. The treat is that the Q70 LaGuardia Link bus will be free through Tuesday. The trick is that both subways and buses will be operating on a Saturday schedule come Monday, meaning there will be no express service on the 6 or 7 trains and the B, J and W trains will not be running, in addition to a number of other service changes. The MTA is offering no rest for weary straphangers in terms of planned work line rerouting: 3 trains won't be running at all, and the Rockaways will be serviced largely by shuttle bus.

The 2 and 3 trains not running between Brooklyn and Manhattan on weekends has become as socially accepted and internalized as the B and Z trains not running on weekends at all. Hopefully, New Yorkers will be able to somehow adjust as easily when the L train shuts down, although it’s not likely. This weekend's service changes hit especially hard in lower Manhattan, where the A, C, E, and 6 trains will all be skipping a number of express stops. Perhaps make weekend plans off a stop which will be serviced, so as to avoid certain misery and commuting woes.

Happy long weekend! The MTA has a host of service changes in store for Saturday and Sunday, but come Monday the subway will be mercifully operating on a weekday schedule with only "minor timing changes." Still, though, the MTA advises customers to allow additional travel time, meaning service will predictably not be too stellar.

MTA board members seek an end to routine fare hikes, mulls selling subway station naming rights

The Metropolitan Transportation Authority revealed on Tuesday an $800 million emergency rescue plan to fix the city’s failing subway system, which includes hiring 2,700 workers, removing some seats and adding additional train cars. And on Wednesday the MTA board grappled with ways to pay for the plan, with some members calling for the agency to end its routine fare and toll hikes and find revenue through other means. However, according to the New York Times, the authority’s chief financial officer, Robert Foran, said the agency needed to continue to raise fares by roughly 4 percent every other year as part of their long-term financial plan.

$3M SHoP Architects-designed Red Hook townhouse is clad in zinc, concrete, and a hardwood screen

While we're used to seeing headline-stealing buildings from innovative design firm SHoP Architects–Barclays Center, the American Copper Buildings, and what will be Brooklyn's tallest tower, to name a modest few–we don't see SHoP-designed townhouses every day. This particular two-family home at 87 Dikeman Street in the heart of creative and laid-back Red Hook has at least four bedrooms and consists of an owners' triplex and a rental unit plus a garden and off-street parking.
