Everything you need to know about the 2022 NYC Marathon

The world's premier marathon event is returning in full force to New York City on Sunday. On November 6, tens of thousands of runners from around the globe will flock to the city to partake in the 51st annual TCS New York City Marathon, a 26.2-mile race that takes participants through all five boroughs and finishes in Central Park. The marathon is returning at full capacity for the first time since 2019 with 50,000 fully-vaccinated runners racing in this year's event.

Target opens new store in Soho

Target this week will open a new location in Soho, the company's 95th store in the greater New York City area. The store, which will be tailored for the surrounding community, will offer an assortment of Target's top-owned and national brands, as well as a contactless pickup order and same-delivery system. Where to see the final Manhattanhenge of 2022

Twice every year, the setting sun aligns perfectly with Manhattan's street grid, making for a picturesque moment that brings New Yorkers a much-needed moment of calm. This effect, dubbed Manhattanhenge by astrophysicist Neil deGrasse Tyson, first blanketed the city streets with the sun's glow on May 29 before making its final appearance on July 12.

Nowhere is quite like New York, especially on the Fourth of July. Macy's signature fireworks show, the largest in the nation, will once again ring in Independence Day with more than 48,000 shells and effects from five barges floating in the East River. While there are many places around the city hosting fireworks watch parties, there are seven official public viewing locations along two miles that will offer the best (read: free) views of the Macy's Fourth of July show, including Midtown, Long Island City, Greenpoint, and Williamsburg.

Subway ridership almost at 90% of pre-pandemic levels in NYC’s working-class neighborhoods

Subway ridership has nearly returned to pre-pandemic levels in New York City's working-class neighborhoods. During the Metropolitan Transportation Authority's monthly board meeting on Wednesday, MTA Chair and CEO Janno Lieber said in most working-class neighborhoods throughout the five boroughs, subway ridership has climbed back up to 70, 80, and for some, 90 percent of pre-pandemic ridership levels. But in the city's major business districts, subway ridership remains way below pre-Covid-19 levels.

Lottery opens for 35 units at new Astoria building designed for low-income seniors

A housing lottery opened this week for 35 very-low-income units at a new development in Queens. Located at 23-11 31st Road in Astoria, the Bishop Valero Residence is a six-story building designed with senior residents in mind. Developed by Catholic Charities and designed by Dattner Architects, the project includes on-site supportive social services accessible through the ground floor's 200-seat community senior center. New Yorkers who are 62 years or older and earn 40 or 50 percent of the area median income, (no more than $33,440 annually for a single person or no more than $53,700 for a household of three) can apply for the units.

A housing lottery opened this week for 185 mixed-income units at a residential tower in Brooklyn. Located at 90 Sands Street in Dumbo, the 30-story building offers affordable units to those with extremely low to moderate incomes and formerly homeless New Yorkers. Once a hotel owned by the Jehovah's Witnesses, the property was acquired by nonprofit Breaking Ground in 2018 for $170 million and converted into supportive and affordable housing. New Yorkers earning 30, 40, 60, 100, and 120 percent of the area median income are eligible to apply for the apartments, priced from $537/month studio apartments to $2,132/month one-bedroom apartments.

Target opens new store in the heart of Times Square

Target next month will open a new location in one of the busiest pedestrian blocks in the city. The company's 92nd store in the greater New York City area opens in Times Square on Monday, April 3, bringing a 33,000-square-foot location to 42nd Street between 7th and 8th Avenues. Fitting in with its neon neighbors, the exterior of the new store features an illuminated sign of the company mascot Bullseye.

A lottery is now open for 48 middle-income apartments at the mixed-use tower, which was designed by Fogarty Finger Architecture and boasts a dark brick facade and bronzed windows. Qualifying New Yorkers earning 80 and 130 percent of the area median income can apply for the apartments, which start at $1,542/month for a one-bedroom unit and go up to $3,219/month for a two-bedroom.

Leasing officially kicked off this week at the second tallest building in Queens, a 71-story rental in Long Island City. Located at 27-29 Queens Plaza North, the building, dubbed Sven, has 958 apartments, with a mix of studios to three-bedroom units priced from $2,950/month. Originally expected to become the borough's tallest building when plans were announced, the tower was surpassed by the Skyline Tower in 2019. Not only do the rentals come with stunning skyline views, but the building is the first in New York City to offer "Spireworks," an app that lets users change the colors of lights at iconic city skyscrapers.

The Hugh, Midtown's new food hall at 157 East 53rd Street in the Citigroup Center opened its doors last month, adding a host of delicious new dining options to the neighborhood. Former Anthony Bourdain food hall team to open Singaporean hawker center in Midtown

Roughly four years since late chef and author Anthony Bourdain canceled his proposal to build a massive Singaporean-inspired food hall in New York City, the plan for the market has been revived. Urbanspace and KF Seetoh, founder of Makansutra, which runs several food courts in Singapore, are teaming up to bring a food market with 18 street-food vendors to 135 West 50th Street in Midtown Manhattan. The market, described as the first authentic Singaporean hawker center in the United States, will open in early 2022.

The NYC Marathon: history, greatest moments, and what to expect this year

The world's largest marathon takes place this Sunday, returning to the five boroughs after a pandemic hiatus last year. On November 7, the 50th New York City Marathon will look slightly different this year, bringing together roughly 33,000 runners, which is about 20,000 fewer participants than usual because of Covid-19. The marathon wasn't always the largest in the world, however. Started by the New York Road Runners Club in 1970, the race began as a few loops around Central Park with just over 100 runners. But the passion of its founders, coupled with the spirit of the city, grew the marathon into a monumental event. In honor of the upcoming 2021 Marathon, 6sqft is taking a look back at the history of the race, its greatest moments, and what's in store for this year.

900-unit mixed-use complex planned for MTA-owned site in Greenpoint

The MTA has announced a new 840,000-square-foot redevelopment project at Monitor Point in Greenpoint, Brooklyn. The project will feature 900 homes with 25 percent permanently affordable and more than 100,000 square feet of retail and commercial space at 40 Quay Street, home to the NYC Transit Mobile Wash Division site. The Gotham Organization has been selected for the project, which will also bring a waterfront walkway–and a new permanent home for The Greenpoint Monitor Museum–to the site.

Futuristic hotel/condo tower designed by a Zaha Hadid alum will rise near LaGuardia Airport

A high-rise hotel and condo building designed by a former senior architect at Zaha Hadid's firm is coming to Queens. Located at 112-51 Northern Boulevard in Corona, the 25-story mixed-use development, dubbed Eastern Emerald, will have roughly 250 hotel rooms, 191 apartments, and a conference and performing arts center. The 370+ foot project, which will break ground this month, features a futuristic, environmentally-friendly design that will reduce carbon emissions and use clean energy for heating and cooling systems.
