Crown Shy team opens new restaurant SAGA on the 63rd floor of Art Deco landmark 70 Pine

Most dinners don't begin with a welcome drink on a terrace 63 stories above Manhattan, but that's exactly the case at SAGA, a new fine dining restaurant and cocktail bar from James Kent and Jeff Katz, the Michelin-star team behind Crown Shy. Both restaurants are located in the Art Deco landmark 70 Pine, Crown Shy at ground level and SAGA nearly 800 feet in the sky. The new restaurant opens today and 6sqft got an exclusive behind-the-scenes look at the beautiful spaces and three outdoor terraces.

Wait list for 39 affordable apartments opens at rental near the Williamsburg waterfront, from $1,999/month

The 19-story rental at 321 Wythe Avenue opened in 2019, just two blocks from the South Williamsburg waterfront. After initially opening a lottery for 39 middle-income units, the building is relaunching its waitlist for these apartments. Currently, there are two vacant units, but all applicants will be placed on the list for future vacancies. Those earning 130 percent of the area median income can apply for the units that range from a $1,999/month one-bedroom to $2,459/month two-bedrooms.

Iconic frozen hot chocolate spot Serendipity3 reopens this week with new fantasy-filled interiors

Iconic Upper East Side restaurant and general store Serendipity3 opened its doors in 1954, attracting the likes of Marilyn Monroe, Andy Warhol, and even Jackie O, who is said to have tried to get the recipe for the famous Frrrozen Hot Chocolate. It was also famously featured in the movie Serendipity, along with One Fine Day and Trust The Man. The decadent dessert spot at 225 East 60th Street has been closed for the past year, but this Friday, July 9, it will reopen to the public after a renovation that created a fantastical, pastel dreamscape, complete with hanging antique Tiffany lamps and a funky neon Pegasus.

New exhibit projects photos of pandemic parenting moments onto the Manhattan Bridge

The pandemic has taken a toll on everyone, but especially so on parents who have had to help their children deal with this time of uncertainty and stress. A new photo exhibition launched in Brooklyn this week that pays tribute to the many "at-home heroes" of New York. Most capacity restrictions to be lifted in New York on May 19

Most state-mandated capacity restrictions in New York will be lifted on May 19, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced on Monday. According to the governor, this means restaurants, stores, gyms, salons, amusement parks, and offices can reopen at 100 percent capacity for the first time in 14 months. The six-foot social distancing guidance from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention will remain in effect at these places, which could still limit capacity depending on the space available. In anticipation of the reopening, on May 17, 24/7 subway service will resume.

NYC’s Open Streets program to be made permanent under new legislation

The popular program that closed streets to cars for pedestrian use will be made permanent under legislation passed by the New York City Council on Thursday. The "Open Streets" initiative first launched last spring as a way to make social distancing easier and to reduce crowds at parks during the height of the coronavirus pandemic in the city. The bill, sponsored by Council Member Carlina Rivera, would provide some funding and resources to the largely volunteer-led program while ensuring the open streets are fairly allocated among communities.

New details for 100% affordable housing complex planned for historic hospital site in Brooklyn

New details and images of an affordable housing development planned for the site of an abandoned hospital in Brooklyn were released earlier this month, ahead of the project's expected public review. During an April 13 meeting, Hudson Companies and St. Nicks Alliance presented Brooklyn Community Board 1 with an updated proposal for Cooper Park Commons, a four-building 100 percent affordable complex that will be built at the long-vacant Greenpoint Hospital site at 288 Jackson Street in East Williamsburg.

Magnolia Bakery opening new location on Columbus Circle

Grabbing some to-go cupcakes to enjoy in Central Park is going to get a lot easier when Magnolia Bakery opens its new Columbus Circle location tomorrow. As was first reported by I Love the Upper West Side, the announcement comes as the famous sweet shop's Upper West Side location has seen a surge in customer traffic. The new location will be at 1784 Broadway, between 58th and 59th Streets, and, unlike the other NYC locations, will offer self-serve refrigerators with pre-packaged favorites like banana pudding and cupcakes, as well as a partnership with Australian coffee cafe Bluestone Lane.

This new cookbook grew from the grassroots effort to share baked goods with essential workers

Award-winning pastry chef Tracy Wilk says, "being in the kitchen makes me happy; it emits a sense of calm where love is shown with a plate of freshly baked chocolate chip cookies." Smorgasburg to open new flea market at former Hester Street Fair site

Outdoor food market operator Smorgasburg announced on Wednesday that it will open a new flea market at a location already familiar to most New Yorkers. Hester Flea will set up shop on the Lower East Side at Hester and Essex Streets, the same place where the Hester Street Fair operated for the last decade, organizers said in an email. As Curbed first reported, the Seward Park Co-op board did not renew the longtime LES fair's lease after their agreement ended last year.
