ODA-designed Crown Heights rental with 328 apartments secures $135M in financing

The Crown Heights rental development that drew the ire of residents for replacing an Associated Supermarket is moving forward. The Hudson Companies on Monday announced it closed on $135 million in financing for the mixed-use project at 975 Nostrand Avenue, a new nine-story development with 328 apartments. As part of a deal reached in 2021, a grocery store run by the same manager of the previous store will take up about 20,000 square feet at the new building.

Portraits of 200 Brooklynites on view at Industry City

The portraits and stories of 200 South Brooklyn residents will be on display in Sunset Park later this month as part of the Free Portrait Project. During a year-long residency at Industry City that began in January 2023, artist Rusty Zimmerman selected Brooklynites to be the subjects of oil paintings and share their oral histories. The portraits, which will be given to participants for free, will be on view from Saturday, February 24 through March 25.

116 deeply affordable homes coming to city-owned Prospect Heights site

A project that will bring affordable apartments and a community garden to Prospect Heights is underway. The city's Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD) last week selected Apex Building Group and Bridge Street Development Corporation to convert a 17,000-square-foot HPD satellite office at 516 Bergen Street into a 116-unit affordable housing development known as "Bergen Green." The project falls under the Atlantic Avenue Mixed-Use Plan (AAMUP), which in combination with the nearby redevelopment of a Dean Street parking lot, will bring roughly 270 affordable homes to Prospect Heights.

Four new skateparks opening in Brooklyn and the Bronx

New York City is working with legendary skateboarder Tony Hawk to develop four new skateparks in Brooklyn and the Bronx. Mayor Eric Adams during his State of the City address on Wednesday announced a partnership with The Skatepark Project, a nonprofit founded by Hawk, to bring four skateparks in communities lacking access to public recreation spaces. The project is being fast-tracked for completion in just three years. The plan involves renovating two existing skateparks, at Brower Park and Bronx Park, and constructing two new ones, at Mount Prospect Park and Soundview Park.

Leasing begins at Brooklyn’s all-electric skyscraper 505 State Street, from $3,475/month

Leasing officially launched on Monday at New York City's first all-electric skyscraper. Developed by Alloy Development, 505 State Street (formerly called 100 Flatbush) is a 44-story tower with 441 apartments in Downtown Brooklyn. The building, which replaces all functions that would normally run on gas with electricity, is part of Alloy Block, a mixed-use development of five old and new buildings that will bring residential, office, retail, and the city's first two Passive House-certified public schools to the neighborhood. A plan to replace a Prospect Heights parking lot with affordable housing for low-income and homeless seniors is moving forward. The city's Department of Housing Preservation and Development (HPD) on Tuesday announced its selection of Jobe Development, Corp., Mega Group Development, and the Institute of Community Living Room to convert a city-owned parking lot at 542 Dean Street into the residential development "Park Edge." The redevelopment is part of the Atlantic Avenue Mixed-Use Plan (AAMUP), which found a community desire for new affordable housing projects on city-owned properties.

Brower Park Library reopens within the Brooklyn Children’s Museum

A pop-up roller disco is opening at Brooklyn’s Atlantic Terminal Mall
