A new Brooklyn Trader Joe’s is opening in Williamsburg this year

Rendering of 200 Kent Avenue courtesy of Cushman & Wakefield Cauliflower gnocchi and dark chocolate peanut butter cups will soon be easier to come by in north Brooklyn. As was first reported by Greenpointers, Trader Joe's will be opening its third location in the borough this year. Currently, the beloved grocer has stores at City Point in Downtown Brooklyn and in Brooklyn Heights. The new outpost will be in Williamsburg at 200 Kent Avenue, a new commercial building between North 2nd and 3rd Streets near the waterfront.

Warm Up, MoMA PS1’s outdoor music and dance party, will return this August

After taking shape as a one-day virtual event last year, MoMA PS1's popular outdoor music series Warm Up will return this August for its 24th season. Limited-capacity tickets are now on sale for the in-person events (it will also be streamed virtually) on August 7, 14, and 21 from 2–8 p.m. DJ sets and live performances include Amorphous, Yung Baby Tate, Yu Su, glaive and ericdoa, Sango, foreigner, La Goony Chonga, and more.

And now, Piano's Jerome L. Greene Science Center will welcome a new ground-floor tenant that's sure to be popular among both students and local residents. Opening Friday, Manhattanville Market is a new food hall from chef Franklin Becker of fast-casual chain the Little Beet.

Lottery opens for 534 mixed-income units at Hunter’s Point South development, from $537/month

A housing lottery opened on Wednesday for 534 mixed-income apartments at a massive rental in Long Island City. As part of the latest phase of TF Cornerstone's redevelopment of Hunter's Point South, 5203 Center Boulevard is one of two buildings at the site designed by ODA, with SLCE as the architect of record. Qualifying New Yorkers earning 40, 50, 130, and 165 percent of the area median income can apply for the apartments, which range from $537/month studios to $3,065/month two-bedrooms. About 100 of the units will be set aside for senior New Yorkers aged 62 and older.

Mother's Day falls on Sunday, May 9th, and not only is it our annual date to celebrate all the moms in our lives, but this year, it's timed with the city's gradual reopening and lots of good news surrounding Covid and vaccine numbers. Since the holiday tends to be one for an early meal, we've rounded up some great New York City restaurants with brunch specials for Mother's Day. Keep in mind that local restaurants are still operating at 50 percent capacity for indoor dining, and many places are requiring reservations.

Eataly’s rooftop restaurant is now a blooming greenhouse

SERRA by Birreria, the popular Italian restaurant on the 14th-floor rooftop of Eataly, has transformed itself for the spring. "Serra will instantly transport guests to the Italian countryside," the restaurant tells us, as it will become a beautiful, blooming greenhouse featuring seasonal dishes with ingredients sourced from the local Union Square Greenmarket. A portion of the proceeds during this time will be donated to the Brooklyn Botanic Garden’s Children’s Garden, where children 2 to 17 years old have the chance to plant and harvest their own crops and flowers.

The units are available to those earning 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, and 80 percent of the area median income. Located at 345 St. Ann's Avenue, the newly constructed mixed-use building is called Park Haven and offers tenants a laundry room, fitness center, and landscaped terrace. In addition, there will be a grocery store and a community facility on the ground floor.

Next Friday, February 12th, begins the Year of the Ox, an animal whose attributes are hardworking and honest. The Lunar New Year is a 16-day celebration, often marked by lantern festivals, parades, and fireworks. But since we aren't able to enjoy a lot of these gatherings this year, we've rounded up some of the best safe celebratory events in New York City, including virtual dumpling-making classes, papercutting workshops, a small business crawl in Chinatown, and traditional Chinese dance and music performances.

See the shiny, amorphous tower imagined for Lower Manhattan

Turkish firm Hayri Atak Architectural Design has proposed something extremely unique for the downtown skyline. Called the Sarcostyle Tower, the shining structure is a large rectangle with sinuous, carved-out sides. Conceptually placed amidst the historic landmarks and mid-century office towers of lower Manhattan, the 689-foot building was inspired by human anatomy and cells. An actual sarcostyle is a muscle fiber, so it makes sense that the firm decided upon this name for theior biologically inspired project.

A housing lottery has launched this week for 58 affordable apartments for senior New Yorkers at a new Brooklyn rental. Located at 1488 New York Avenue, the Bishop Philius and Helene Nicolas Senior Residences rises seven stories and contains 89 studio apartments and social services for residents. To apply, New Yorkers must have at least one household member who is 62 years of age or older, qualify for Section 8 benefits, and earn $45,500 or less, annually. Eligible applicants will pay 30 percent of their income for the studio apartments.

The building at 881 Erskine Street sits within The Fountains development, a mixed-use project of six buildings that will ultimately bring more than 1,100 affordable homes to the area. In the Tremont section of the Bronx, just south of Little Italy and just west of the Bronx Zoo and Botanical Garden, a new affordable senior housing complex has launched a lottery for 122 units. Located at 600 East 179th Street, the 176-unit building was designed by SLCE Architects and features environmentally friendly features such as two large terraces and a rear garden, including both indoor and outdoor vegetable gardens, and a green wall. The available apartments include studios and one-bedrooms for those earning 30 or 50 percent of the area median income, who will pay 30 percent of their income on rent.

The mixed-use project has a unique Flatiron-esque shape that lends itself to a large outdoor garden. There's also a huge roof deck complete with outdoor kitchens and grills and various lounging and dining areas, among a slew of other amenities. Twenty percent of the 429 apartments at 222 East 44th Street is reserved as affordable housing. Two-and-a-half years ago, a lottery opened for 109 units for those earning 40, 60, and 130 percent of the area median income, and it looks like some of those on the higher end of the spectrum are newly available, as another lottery is open for 16 middle-income units. The glass tower in Midtown East was designed by Handel Architects and is a quick walk to Grand Central, the UN, and Midtown. Plus, it's got a ton of great amenities.
