Historic 1865 Chelsea firehouse was Andy Warhol’s 1949 refuge, now renting for $33K

The Chelsea Firehouse at 323 West 21st Street would be an historic icon based on its origins alone, beginning in the late 19th century as an actual firehouse, built to accommodate a shiny new horse-drawn steam pumper engine (h/t Daytonian in Manhattan). The mid-Victorian era structure not only survived the ensuing decades, but in 1999, Architectural Digest featured the duplex shown here, by then one of three luxury apartments, calling it "indisputably one of a kind." In the years between, the building was home to free-spirited performers and artists, including Andy Warhol and Philip Pearlstein who sought refuge here from seedy lodgings in the East Village. The designer-renovated, uniquely-configured 4,000 square-foot duplex in this storied building is now on the rental market for $33,000.

Make your stay in NYC an authentic one: Sleep in a closet-sized space for $3,500

This second-floor walk-up at 235 West 18th Street is about as much like an average NYC rental apartment as you could get for a month or two in town, which is clearly the intended purpose of this furnished Chelsea pad. The listing states that it's available for one to twelve months, but there are towels on the beds, AirBnB-style, along with other bare-bones necessities. Knowing that makes it seem a lot more acceptable that one of the apartment's two "flex" bedrooms appears to be in an actual closet—which isn't so bad if you're only in town for the holidays. And to be fair, whole rooms in some of the city's hipper boutique hotels appear to be in closets also. The listing says the apartment "comfortably sleeps 4," which apparently means at $3,500 you're getting a pretty good bargain.

This $845K Chelsea studio’s sleep loft, brick walls and terrace are dreamy

This Chelsea-meets-Meatpacking studio at 221 West 14th Street checks the boxes for charm, neighborhood amenities and convenience, and it possesses that elusive bonus item: an attractive outdoor space with at least enough room for a rosé al fresco. For $845,000 it's not exactly a steal, though if neighborhood comps are a factor—which of course they are—then it becomes one. The second-floor townhouse condominium's layout works, allowing the space to be a small studio, yet solving the problem of having your bed next to the fridge.

West Chelsea mansion reboot with gym, pool, elevator, theatre and wine room ready for its $36.8M close-up

Back in September 6sqft brought you news of the “unbridled luxury” in the works for a townhouse at 357 West 17th Street that designer Karim Rashid sold to Wonder Works Construction Corp., developer of Williamsburg‘s pricey Oosten condominium complex, for $9.35 million in 2014. Rashid had lived in–and occasionally rented out–a candy-colored, neon-furnished loft in the building. Wonder Works subsequently hired Architect Andres Escobar to transform the 25-foot-wide building into an 11,000-square-foot modern single-family mansion with five bedrooms, 11 baths, a private internal garage, a 400 bottle glass-enclosed wine room, a fully-stocked gym and spa with a pool, a screening room, decks, terraces and patios with city views. Though the renderings looked sufficiently swank, the finished home, now on the market for $38.6 million, more than delivers on the promise of luxe. From the smallest details (Swarovski crystal drawer pulls, faux croc finishes on kitchen cabinets, marble everything and a bathroom faucet that's suspended from the ceiling) to the previously-mentioned lifestyle transformers, no expense was spared in the creation of this contemporary urban manse.

Windows at Frank Gehry’s IAC Building are oozing sealant

Frank Gehry's IAC Building was completed in 2006 for Barry Diller's media company InterActiveCorp. It was Gehry's first project in NYC, boasting his signature curving facade and ushering in a wave of starchitect-designed projects along Eleventh Avenue in Chelsea. It also gained notability for its full-height, double-glazed window panes that fade from clear to white, giving the 10-story structure the look of an iceberg. But it's this feature that's now resulted in a lawsuit, according to the Post, who reports that "the window sealant has become a dripping, opaque blob."

Studio Seilern designs boxy, mixed-use tower for West Chelsea’s ‘starchitects row’

The stretch of Eleventh Avenue that winds through Chelsea in the 20s has become a hotbed of starchitecture activity ever since plans were announced for the High Line. ArchDaily brings us the latest project that may rise along the corridor, and though it doesn't have the name recognition of its neighbors, its interesting design, inspired by MoMA's famed sculpture garden, fits right in. The 24-story glass tower from London's Studio Seilern Architects will have commercial space for a gallery on the lower levels with residential units above. Judging from the views, the project site appears to be near the corner of West 21st Street and Eleventh Avenue, directly across from Norman Foster's 551W21 and a block north of Jean Nouvel's 100 Eleventh Avenue and Frank Gehry's IAC Building.

‘Slumdog Millionaire’ director Danny Boyle lists sunny Chelsea penthouse for $2.15M

Eight-time Academy Award-winning director and producer Danny Boyle (his credits include "Slumdog Millionaire," "Trainspotting," "28 Days Later," and "Steve Jobs," and he was the artistic director for the 2012 Olympics) has put his sunny Chelsea co-op on the market for $2.15 million, according to LL NYC. The triplex penthouse at 334 West 19th Street looks a bit bland for such an A-lister, but as Luxury Listings explains, Boyle bought the apartment in 2010 for $1.7 million (in a reported all-cash transaction), and then transferred it to his daughter Caitlin in 2014.

Uma Thurman makes a big profit on her Gramercy Park duplex

Uma Thurman's Gramercy Park duplex went into contract in May after hitting the market for $6.25 million less than two months prior. Considering the co-op at 1 Lexington Avenue came with five bedrooms, a classically elegant look, and a coveted key to the park, it's no shock that it actually closed for $6.61 million, more than five percent over ask, according to the Observer, and well over the $2.65 million the actress paid for it in 2006.

Hoteliers buy historic Hotel Chelsea for $250M, will redevelop as condos and hotel

After five years of ownership changes and tenant battles, a group of well-known hoteliers is betting on the future of the historic Hotel Chelsea. The Real Deal reports that a joint venture made up of BD Hotels’ Richard Born and Ira Drukier and Sean MacPherson (who owns, among others, the Bowery Hotel and Waverly Inn) has closed on the hotel for $250 million, and they plan to convert it to condos and a likely trendy hotel.

Bobby Flay finds a renter for his $22,500/month Chelsea duplex

Famed chef and Food Network personality Bobby Flay has had a tough time unloading his Chelsea Mercantile duplex since splitting with his ex-wife, "Law & Order: SVU" actress Stephanie March. He originally listed the sprawling home a year ago for $7.95 million, then added the option to rent it for $22,500/month in January, followed by a $1 million price chop in May. But the Post reports today that the Iron Chef has finally found a renter to take the pad off his hands.

Billy Bush trying to unload Chelsea townhouse for $8.2M after being ousted from the ‘Today’ show

Back in December, before he became known to the world as Donald Trump's "locker room" buddy, Billy Bush bought the townhouse at 224 West 22nd Street in Chelsea. The anchor previously lived in LA, but needed a NYC residence for his new "Today" show gig. Though the Post reported earlier this week that Bush was listing the home now that he's been ousted from the NBC morning show, it actually hit the market in April for $8,995,000. However, as The Real Deal points out, just yesterday it got a price chop to $8,250,000, which means the disgraced Bush is probably hoping to make a quick getaway.

For $14M, own the former Chelsea penthouse of ‘Law & Order: SVU’ star Mariska Hargitay

"Law & Order: SVU" star Mariska Hargitay sold her incredible Chelsea penthouse back in 2008 for $8.15 million. The duplex spread at the landmarked O'Neill Building (the former Ladies' Mile department store called Hugh O'Neill's Dry Goods Store) spans nearly 5,000 square feet with an additional 2,500 square feet of outdoor space spread across three terraces, one of which sits right next to one of the building's gilded cupolas; inside, there's a bonus room within the cupola. The residence is currently owned by Ewa Laboz. She bought it with her late husband Maurice, who passed away in early 2015, but was a noted millionaire landlord. He made headlines for leaving $20 million to his two daughters, but only if they complied with a list of requirements like getting married, earning a certain salary, and becoming a stay-at-home mom. Despite the hefty fortune he left behind, the family is clearly looking to add to it, as they've listed the apartment for $14 million.

Renderings revealed for High Line-adjacent condo on hot West Chelsea block

West 29th Street between Tenth and Eleventh Avenues is quickly becoming to Chelsea what Bond Street is to Noho--a delightfully concentrated mishmash of high-profile architecture projects. Over on the west side, this one-block stretch is already home to SCDA Architects' Soori High Line with its noted private pools, Cary Tamarkin's 550 West 29th Street, and Maestro West Chelsea, a 35-story trio of rentals. CityRealty now shares a look at the block's newest project, a 10-story, 61-unit condo at 519 West 29th Street from developer Six Sigma, which is distinguished by a glass facade punctuated by rectangular balcony alcoves flanked with green walls.

Construction update: Soori High Line’s soaring ceilings and private, heated pools take shape

Soo K. Chan, founder of Singapore-based firm SCDA Architects, says "good architecture should move the human spirit." The practice's first New York development, a ground-up condominium named Soori High Line at 522 West 29th Street, certainly elicits a high degree of "wow," conveyed through its soaring 19-foot ceilings, equally tall windows, private heated swimming pools, and living room fireplaces. The $70 million project is a joint venture between Siras Development and Soo Chan's real estate arm Oriel. 6sqft took a tour of the still-under-construction building, where it was clear that even in its raw unfinished state, the opulence of Soori's homes is already undeniable.

You may not know Brandon Stanton by name, but you certainly know his photo-journalism project "Humans of New York." ‘This American Life’ host Ira Glass sued by condo board for harboring rats and bedbugs

Act one: A case of we said, they said, and the bedbugs at the center of it all. According to The Post, "This American Life" host Ira Glass and his wife Anaheed Alani are being sued by their 159 West 24th Street condo board for allowing bedbugs and rats to take hold of their home. The complaint was filed Thursday in the Manhattan Supreme Court and alleges that couple's neglect has created "unsanitary conditions" that have affected the entire building.

Downton Abbey director lists $5M Chelsea penthouse with glorious outdoor space

This duplex penthouse, located at the Chelsea condo 263 Ninth Avenue, has been listed for sale by Michael Engler, a director who has earned Emmy nominations for his work on Downton Abbey, Sex and the City, and 30 Rock. $4.95 million will get you his customized loft with a "private oasis" of outdoor space--nearly 1,000 square feet over a top-floor, south- and west-facing terrace. Engler owns the apartment with his husband--Stribling broker Steven Sumser, also the listing agent for the apartment--which they bought in 2006 for $2.545 million.

Alec and Hilaria Baldwin scope out $16.5M Chelsea penthouse for growing family

It's safe to say at this point that Alec Baldwin's infamous New York Magazine tirade about leaving the public eye of New York was not literal, as two and half years later the actor and his wife Hilaria haven't budged. In fact, the couple, currently expecting their third child together, was seen checking out a $16.5 million Chelsea penthouse, according to the Post. The 5,000-square-foot apartment is located at the top of one of the London Terrace Towers towers and is being sold as an approved combination of two existing units. It's said to be currently owned by "Sopranos" creator David Chase. But Baldwin hasn't eased up on privacy concerns. Baldwin hasn't eased up on privacy concerns, however. Knicks’ new star player Joakim Noah buys a $6M Chelsea penthouse with huge terrace

Joakim Noah--NBA All Star, philanthropist, social activist, and noted free-spirit--signed with the Knicks in June for $18 million a year after spending nine years with the Chicago Bulls. Ahead of his debut season in New York, Noah has scooped up a $5.8 million Chelsea penthouse with an appropriately tricked-out entertaining terrace, reports the Post. The three-bedroom spread at 555 West 23rd Street not only has 2,300 square feet of impeccable indoor space, but the 2,000 square feet of outdoor space boasts a built-in hot tub, gas grill and wet bar, pergola, self-watering planters, and surround sound.
