A House in the Woods by William Reue Uses Locally-Sourced Materials and Bold Geometry

Just one look at A House in the Woods by William Reue and you know this is not your average piece of architecture. Located in the Hudson Valley on a densely forested 8.5-acre lot at the base of the Shawangunk Mountains, the 4,800-square-foot, LEED-certified home was realized through the owner's request for "an artful home that responded to her values of order, beauty, and environmental stewardship." Reue arrived at this goal by using bold, locally-sourced materials to create a seamless transition between the built structure and its surrounding landscape.

A 1960s Upstate Log Cabin Transformed into a One-Room Family Home

Takaaki Kawabata (Taka), a senior associate at architecture firm Janson Goldstein, and his wife, designer Christina Kawabata, wanted to move their family from Williamsburg, where their rent had quadrupled, to a rural home still within commuting distance to the city. After first seeing a 1960s log cabin in Garrison, New York, Taka wasn't impressed. But, having grown up in a one-room farmhouse in Japan, when he looked over the plans he knew this was his family's new home. The couple bought the cabin for $335,000, embarked on a year-long $50,000 remodel, and transformed the outdated structure into an 1,100-square-foot family home with a completely open-plan layout and an excess-free living model.

Incorporated Architecture & Design’s Texas Hill House Was Inspired by Traditional Cow Barns

Like their Sixteen Doors House, Incorporated Architecture & Design’s Texas Hill House was inspired by traditional loft-like cow barns. Located on 25 acres in rural upstate New York in Craryville, a town at the base of the Berkshires, the three-bedroom home is strikingly modern while still blending in with its wooded farmland surroundings. It was developed for a young New York City-based couple–one born and bred in NYC and the other from Costa Rica and of Asian descent–who sought a retreat from the hustle and bustle of everyday urban life. The home blends both of their decorative traditions as well as reminders of their travels through Europe, China, Japan, and South America.

And this estate in Red Rock, New York couldn't be any more perfect for a festive getaway. The work of Anmahian Winton Architects, the Red Rock House is a property made up of the main one-bedroom house and a combined guest house/garage. It's situated on a densely wooded, 16-acre site and was designed to work with the existing topography, taking advantage of the landscape, views, and daylight.

Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones Sell Their Charming Bedford Farmhouse for $7.5M

It looks like Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones are bidding adieu to their "tiny" six-bedroom, six-bath brick Colonial up in Bedford. According to the LA Times, the couple have just sold the home for $7.5 million—a bit under their $8.1M August asking price, but well above the $5.1 million they originally paid for it. Bedford residents, however, shouldn't say their goodbyes just yet; Michael and Catherine will still be staying in the area. In October, after ending their separation, the pair snagged a $11.25 million, 15,458-square-foot stunner boasting eight bedrooms, 13.5 baths and 13 acres (Talk about a fresh start!). While the recently-sold home is quite demure when compared to their new estate, the updated 1930s farmhouse has plenty of charm and comes complete with 5.7 bucolic acres of its own, surrounded by a horse farm on three sides.

Stamberg Aferiat + Associates was given quite the challenge–to bring together their client's love of Japanese palace architecture, their large-scale modern art collection and the existing architecture of a 200-year-old farmhouse, all while respecting and enhancing the property's 32 acres with two ponds and wooded islands. The resulting Sycamore Creek house maintains the feel and scale of the farmhouse from its primary vantage point, but incorporates Japanese palace architecture to create dynamic spaces among the original structure and a new addition.

Artist Transforms Decrepit Woodstock Property into a Psychedelic Playground and Home

We know Woodstock, New York is an upstate haven for creative types, but we still had to look twice when we saw this rainbow-colored house gracing its woodsy landscape. Artist Kat O'Sulllivan, also know as Katwise, is the mastermind behind the psychedelic transformation of this barn-home. When she first purchased the property it was a decrepit looking house from the 1840s, far from the graphic masterpiece that it is today. The exterior of her home boasts a vibrant spectrum of colors and patterns, and the interior is equally spectacular and whimsical.

Bruce Willis Buys $12 Million, 22-Acre Site in Bedford, NY

Lots of Hollywood celebrities are making waves in Bedford, New York this week. Just after it was reported that Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones sold their home in the woodsy Westchester town for $7.5 million, in turn closing on a nearby property for $11 million, it's now making headlines that Bruce Willis has dropped $12 million on two Bedford parcels totaling 22.32 acres. The actor has been very busy with real estate lately. He recently listed his Sun Valley ski house and Beverly Hills estate and bought a Central Park West apartment. Willis and his wife Emma Heming will now get to enjoy the 8,000-square-foot, shingle-style home, as well as the adjoining property's antique house and two renovated guest cottages.

House in the Berkshires by David Hotson Is Made of Two Shed-Roofed Bars

This eco-friendly home in the Berkshires was designed by architect David Hotson to serve two functions-- a private getaway for the client (a couple with grown children) and a summer and winter vacation house to accommodate large family gatherings. And it's just about that time when the owners will have to start planning for their holiday get-togethers, which is likely a bit less stressful since the dwelling was built with these events in mind. The house is perched on a wooded hillside that slopes down toward an open clearing. It's composed of two long, parallel shed-roofed bars that run east to west, perpendicular to the site's slope.

Incorporated Architecture & Design’s Sixteen Doors House is “In” the Landscape

With sixteen transparent windows/doors, it's no wonder Incorporated Architecture & Design bills their Sixteen Doors House as being "in" the surrounding landscape. The rural retreat in a forest clearing in Hillsdale, New York gives the feeling of being in a completely transparent glass box, but still incorporates a warm wooden frame and privacy measures. The contemporary house is one of three upstate projects by the firm that arose from studies of the traditional, loft-like cow barns that are found throughout the local farmland.

Y-Shaped Guest House was Co-Designed by HHF Architects & Artist Ai Weiwei

When you're avid art collectors like the owners of the Tsai Residence and Guest House, you probably won't be too impressed with a typical rectangular structure to house your masterpieces. That's where Swiss-based firm HHF Architects and world-famous Chinese artist Ai Weiwei come in. Working together, they created a unique Y-shaped guest house for the couple's Ancram, New York property. Each of the home's three wings has a specific purpose--bedroom, workroom, and art gallery. The simple and effective design "served to link these elements at isolated points and to define the overall appearance of the guesthouse."

Hudson Design’s Rustic Writer’s Studio Barn is a Converted Two-Story Garage

But whatever the case, the Writer's Studio Barn by Hudson Design lives up to our enchantment. Located in Garrison, New York, the iconic American barn was originally used as a garage with two horse stalls. The conversion was conceived as a tranquil retreat for a couple to find inspiration among the lush landscape and natural views. And the existing stick-frame structure offered a loft with the perfect space and orientation for a secluded studio. It's now a rustic one-bedroom apartment with room for cars and storage.

INTERVIEW: Architect Adam Kushner on Building the World’s First 3D-Printed Estate

3D printing has been making the design and tech rounds lately, from ceramics and construction bricks to cars and mini castles. But there's one project in the works that's looking to blow the rest out of the water. New York City-based architect and contractor Adam Kushner of KUSHNER Studios plans to build the world's first 3D-printed estate in Gardiner, New York, which will include a pool, pool house, and 2,400-square-foot main house--all of which will be constructed using this new technology. Kushner has teamed up with Italian inventor and engineer Enrico Dini, who will ship a modified version of his D-Shape printer to New York in January. Dini's printer uses his patented magnesium-based binding process combined with a material like sand to render stone-like objects. Kushner also teamed up with Enrico's local contact James Wolff, co-founder of Deep Space Industries, which works with NASA on asteroid prospecting, mining, and processing. The three men, along with Nigel Woods, founded D-Shape Enterprises New York. Adam's construction company In House Group, Inc. will hire D-Shape Enterprises to build the estate.

Now that school's back in session, we've found the perfect solitary haven for reading, writing, and studying. A minimal cube in the woods, the Scholar's Library by Gluck+ Architects is located in a serene, forested area of Olivebridge, New York. The design is enclosed on the bottom, but open with wrap-around windows on the top. It's "walls" change with the seasons, turning green in the summer, orange in the fall, and white in the winter.

Gluck+ Architects’ Rado Redux is a Naturally Modern Take on a Classic 1950s Home

New York-based Gluck+ Architects recently renovated a classic mid-century modern home to its former glory. Built back in 1956, the Rado Redux House in Armonk was originally designed by Czech émigré architect Ladislav Rado, who arrived from Europe with an invitation from Walter Gropius and eventually became Harvard University's architecture chairman. Exemplary of its time, the building is openly related to its external environment and features influences from Japan.

Levenbetts’ CCO1 House Leaves a Modern Mark on an Upstate Agricultural Field

When you think farmhouse, images of red barns and wooden fences probably come to mind. But the CCO1 House by Levenbetts couldn't stray farther from this nostalgic vision; and that's a good thing. Built in the middle of an agricultural field in Columbia County, New York, this contemporary home was designed to work around the site's existing linear grooves, etched into the rolling hills from years of farming. The organization, cladding, and details all take the topography into account, and the house steps up from east to west to follow the contour of the land.
