On a few rare occasions 6sqft has featured amazing private islands, some storied, some small–and generally for sale. Most of us dream of living on their own private island at least occasionally, and these amazing listings give us a room-by-room tour and waterfront view. Somewhere between the tiny and the impossibly grand, Whiskey Island looks an awful lot like the average private island fantasy. You can buy the 3.10 acre dream; or, if you haven’t got $2.95 million, you can rent the dream on a weekly basis for family getaways or events.

You probably haven’t heard of Clayton, NY–but you may want to. Some facts: It’s a peninsula surrounded by the St. Lawrence River along the northern edge of upstate New York near the Canadian border. It’s among the Thousand Islands, a group of what’s actually more like 2,000 islands that straddle the U.S. – Canadian border. The area was a glittering late-19th-century vacation spot for the wealthy, and elaborate mansions remain on various islands today including Boldt Castle on Heart Island and Singer Castle on Dark Island.

The island gets its name from a colorful history as a prohibition drop point for rum runners. More legal–and more fun–The surrounding shoals are a favorite for divers searching for prohibition relics.

The island’s offerings include a charming renovated historic main lodge that was constructed in 1875, where you’ll find eight bedrooms, four baths, a commercial-grade kitchen, a family room, a library/office and plenty of porches from which to watch the sun rise and set. There’s also a two-bedroom guest cottage on the property. A new two-slip boathouse, deepwater docks and a swim deck provide plenty to do on the waterfront. Panoramic river views, privacy and calm harbor are a given.
