A waitlist has opened to fill affordable apartments available now and for future vacancies at an architectural standout in Murray Hill. The Copper, originally known as the American Copper Buildings, is a pair of luxury rental towers at 626 First Avenue with a three-story sky bridge connecting the two buildings. New Yorkers earning 60 percent of the area median income can apply for a spot on the wait list for the apartments, which are priced between $832/month to $1,311/month on NYC Housing Connect.

Developed by JDS Development and designed by SHoP Architects, The Copper consists of two towers with slanted silhouettes, one reaching 41 stories and the other at 48 stories. The rental contains 761 total apartments, with 160 of the units designated as affordable. A housing lottery for those units first opened in 2016.

According to CityRealty, current availabilities for market-rate apartments at The Copper range from a $4,578/month studio to a $12,893/month three-bedroom.

The project’s 100-foot-long sky bridge is suspended 300 feet in the air and has a 75-foot indoor lap pool, hot tub, bar, and lounge for residents inside. Other amenities include a double-height fitness center with a rock-climbing wall, a Turkish-style marble hammam, and a rooftop pool overlooking the East River. According to the lottery website, additional membership and reservation fees may apply for certain amenities.

Qualifying New Yorkers can apply for American Copper’s waitlist until January 23, 2023. Complete details on how to apply are available here. Questions regarding this offer must be referred to NYC’s Housing Connect department by dialing 311.

If you don’t qualify for the housing lotteries mentioned, visit CityRealty.com’s no-fee rentals page for other apartment deals in the city.
