Plant pro The Sill opens new shop in the heart of Williamsburg

Williamsburg residents will soon be able to fill their stylish pads with plants to match. The Sill, the popular direct-to-consumer houseplant company, opened its second location in Brooklyn this week. Located in the heart of the neighborhood at 190 Berry Street, the store is full of the company's best-selling items, from potted succulents and cacti to tropical plants and ferns.

The 10 best plant shops in NYC

At long last, it appears springtime’s on its way to New York, transforming streets of sad, wilted grey and brown into, er, slightly less sad-looking grey and brown. If the little buds starting to sprout on tree branches in the parks and on the streets aren’t enough green for you, there are plenty of plant shops in the city that’ll help introduce some oxygenating goodness into your own apartment, no matter how small, dark, or pet-filled it may be. Note that for the sake of this list, we’ve stuck with plant shops, not florists, though you’ll find arrangements at some of these shops—this one, though, is for home gardeners and lovers of succulents, which it turns out you do need to water from time to time, a lesson some of us first-time plant parents learned the hard way.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art is marking its 150th anniversary this year, and as part of the celebration, they're embarking on new exhibits and collaborations, one of which is this fun partnership with The Sill. The "Met 150 Edit" is a multi-designer capsule collection from the plant company that features limited-edition earthenware planters and fun art-inspired message pops ("Vincent Van Grow" and "Untitled Greens #1").

The Sill is delivering 10,000 orchids to healthcare workers for Mother’s Day

Sure, it's going to be hard on everyone to be apart this Sunday, but think about all of our healthcare heroes who will be working on the frontlines this Mother's Day. To show their gratitude, local houseplant haven The Sill and its orchid partner Just Add Ice are donating 10,000 orchids to frontline healthcare workers at Mount Sinai’s seven NYC hospitals. They delivered the first 5,000 yesterday and will be distributing the rest today.

Check out The Sill’s first Brooklyn brick-and-mortar in Cobble Hill

Cobble Hill got a little more green with the opening of The Sill's first brick-and-mortar in Brooklyn (they also have a recently opened kiosk at City Point). The outpost at 195 Pacific Street features an apartment-friendly collection of succulents, cacti, and tropical plants that can be potted in the store's own line of planters or purchased on their own. And to make it easy for newbies, each plant has straight-forward labels that you know how much sunlight and water it needs, as well as if it's pet-friendly.
