The second batch of affordable apartments is now available at the Hayden, a 50-story, 924-unit highrise in the blossoming neighborhood of Long Island City in Queens. Designed by SCLE Architects, the building at 43-25 Hunter Street features amenities like a fitness center, yoga room, basketball court, rooftop solarium, screening room, library and more. Qualifying New Yorkers earning between $34,355 and $57,240 can apply for $947 per month studios, $1,017 per month one-bedrooms and the $1,230 per month two-bedrooms.

Billionaire sports team owner gets $17M discount on Upper East Side mega-mansion

A massive Upper East Side single-family townhouse at 50 East 69th Street was just wrestled off the market for an equally monumental $45 million, sources have told the New York Post. Joshua Harris, co-founder of Apollo Global Management, owner of the Philadelphia 76ers and part owner of the NHL’s New Jersey Devils, just bought the 21,070-square-foot house, which was listed at $72 million last September and reduced to $59 million in June. The 44-foot-wide limestone-clad building, known as the Dommerich Mansion, was built in 1917 in a neo-French classic style by architect Henry C. Pelton for Otto Louis Dommerich, who ran his family's family cotton business. It was most recently being used as a cosmetic surgery facility.

Hamptons estate that was F. Scott Fitzgerald’s inspiration for ‘The Great Gatsby’ asks $17M

F. Scott Fitzgerald's cult-classic novel "The Great Gatsby," about hard-partying Long Island millionaires in the '20s, was inspired by actual soirees the author attended at mansions along the North Shore, aka the Gold Coast. One such locale, a French Normandy-style residence on Sands Point known as the Rumsey-Harriman Estate, is said to have inspired the book's fictional East Egg, and as the Post first reported it's just hit the market for $16,880,000. Designed in 1928 by none other than McKim, Mead & White, the 5.3-acre waterfront property was owned by Junior League founder Mary Harriman Rumsey, whose father was railroad tycoon E.H. Harriman and brother New York governor W. Averell Harriman. Fitzgerald spent a good deal of time at the home with Rumsey and her family, widely believed to have inspired Gatsby.

A single-family townhouse in affluent Sutton Place has hit the market for $16 million. The home, located at 4 Sutton Square, was built in 1921 for Henry Sprague, the inventor of the Sprague gas meter. Beauty entrepreneur Florence M. Lewis, better known professionally as Elizabeth Arden, and Michael Jeffries, president of Abercrombie & Fitch, have also called the exclusive, five-story pad home. Last year, the 4,000-square-foot, four bedroom home was on the market for $19.95 million.

Mega-developer Aby Rosen lists art-filled Upper East Side townhouse for $20M

Big-time real estate developer and man about town Aby Rosen has put his extravagant Upper East Side townhouse at 16 East 78th Street on the market for $19,950,000, a good deal more than the $8.4 million he paid for it back in 2004. According to LL NYC, the listing comes just a week after his other nearby home at 5 East 80th Street, which he's rented for 15 years for nearly $23,500 a month, narrowly escaped the auction block. Rosen expressed interest in buying the property, which could be why he's decided to part ways with this residence. Listing photos show the art collector's impressive contemporary collection, as well as the full-full master suite, roof deck, and garden.

Jimmy Choo co-founder Tamara Mellon finally sells UES penthouse at a $14M discount

You'll be hard pressed to find a pair of discounted Jimmy Choos, but the iconic shoe brand's co-founder Tamara Mellon didn't fare as well when it came to her Upper East Side penthouse, which sits atop the historic Carhart Mansion at 3 East 95th Street. Mellon bought the Carnegie Hill apartment from Seagram heir Charles Bronfman Jr. and first listed it for sale in 2014 for $34 million. After several price chops and an attempt as a $85,000/month rental, it's finally found a buyer reports LL NYC. Contemporary artist George Condo paid $19.8 million for the condo (no pun intended), much less than the most recent ask of $25 million.

Upper West Side penthouse masterminded by Italian designer Ettore Sottsass asks $19 million

This Hotel des Artistes apartment, now on the market, comes with an incredible interior decor story. Bloomberg notes that it belongs to the French-born entrepreneur/photographer/art collector/playboy Jean Pigozzi, who purchased it in 1986. Soon after, he enlisted Ettore Sottsass, designer and founder of the Memphis Group, to redesign it. Sottass, at the time, was at the height of his fame, and ended up designing every nook and cranny. (He passed away in 2007, and the Metropolitan Museum of Art will host a retrospective of his work this summer.) As Pigozzi told Bloomberg, "He designed 100 percent of everything... Every table, every sofa, every book shelf, every sink, every doorknob." He even helped Pigozzi expand the design into the adjacent duplex that he purchased a few years later. Now, the fabulous penthouse is on the market for $19 million.

New York City's classic pre-war co-ops are in an elegant class by themselves, with beamed high ceilings, big casement windows, entry halls and galleries, maid's rooms and gracious spaces in general. The more interesting among them tend to be those in which the customized luxury of their longtime residents has been preserved. Such is case with this spacious duplex at 322 East 57th Street in Sutton Place (where you'll find a lot of preserved customized luxury). The listing describes the three-bedroom deco-era co-op, listed for $5.195 million, as "exquisite, dramatic and unique." Designed in 1933 by renowned architect Joseph Urban, the 3,300 square-foot apartment was for 40 years the home of the late Senator Jacob Javits and his wife, Marian, who died earlier this year. Coincidentally, just a few days after Gwyneth Paltrow and ex-husband Chris Martin sold their $10 million Tribeca penthouse at 416 Washington Street (where Gwynie has been currently living), the couple's former townhouse at 13 Harrison Street has hit the market for $24,995,000 (h/t LLNYC). The five-story, loft-style residence boasts seven bedrooms, ten bathrooms, an elevator, three wood-burning fireplaces, three laundry facilities, large skylights, and a lovely solarium. It's currently configured as two condos-- a six-bedroom owner's quadruplex and a mixed-use ground floor apartment--but will be delivered vacant.

After selling the $50 million penthouse at the beginning of the year and celebrating the building's topping out last month, the Related Companies has unveiled the $65 million penthouse atop their Tribeca condo 70 Vestry, the largest apartment listed in New York this year. The massive, incredibly luxurious home is the crowning jewel of the Robert A.M. Stern-designed project, boasting close to 8,000 square feet of interior space designed by Daniel Romualdez and 3,687 square feet of private outdoor space across three levels and including a rooftop terrace. Benjamin Joseph, Executive Vice President at Related Companies, said in a press release, "A penthouse of this caliber has never before been offered in Tribeca, and may never be again."

Historic 1865 Chelsea firehouse was Andy Warhol’s 1949 refuge, now renting for $33K

The Chelsea Firehouse at 323 West 21st Street would be an historic icon based on its origins alone, beginning in the late 19th century as an actual firehouse, built to accommodate a shiny new horse-drawn steam pumper engine (h/t Daytonian in Manhattan). The mid-Victorian era structure not only survived the ensuing decades, but in 1999, Architectural Digest featured the duplex shown here, by then one of three luxury apartments, calling it "indisputably one of a kind." In the years between, the building was home to free-spirited performers and artists, including Andy Warhol and Philip Pearlstein who sought refuge here from seedy lodgings in the East Village. Rockrose Development's newest Long Island City rental The Hayden commenced its affordable housing lottery earlier this November. As first reported by Court Square Blog, the massive 50-story, 924-unit, amenity-filled complex at 43-25 Hunter Street will deliver 195 below-market units to the western Queens neighborhood when it opens sometime in 2017. The subsidized units are earmarked for households who earn no more than 60 percent of the area median income, and according to the building's official lottery webpage, range from $913/month studios to $1,183/month two-bedrooms.

‘Slumdog Millionaire’ director Danny Boyle lists sunny Chelsea penthouse for $2.15M

Eight-time Academy Award-winning director and producer Danny Boyle (his credits include "Slumdog Millionaire," "Trainspotting," "28 Days Later," and "Steve Jobs," and he was the artistic director for the 2012 Olympics) has put his sunny Chelsea co-op on the market for $2.15 million, according to LL NYC. The triplex penthouse at 334 West 19th Street looks a bit bland for such an A-lister, but as Luxury Listings explains, Boyle bought the apartment in 2010 for $1.7 million (in a reported all-cash transaction), and then transferred it to his daughter Caitlin in 2014.
