Zayn Malik drops $10M on Soho penthouse after Gigi Hadid breakup

After supermodel Gigi Hadid bought a condo at Noho's trendy new building 10 Bond Street in July 2016, she was often seen leaving the building with then-new flame Zayn Malik. But the couple, dubbed ZiGi. Malik by their swarms of fans, announced their breakup last week, and it looks like the pop star was well prepared to begin his bachelor lifestyle, as the Post reports that just days after the news went public, Malik closed on a $10.69 million Soho penthouse at 63 Greene Street.

CNN correspondent and former “Ahead of the Curve” co-anchor Jason Carroll just listed this stylish, sparkly one-bedroom home in the rakishly-named Lion’s Head condominium at 121 West 19th Street in Chelsea for $1.75 million. The super-social location near Nomad and the Village makes this one-bedroom unit a great bet if you like being surrounded by tons of shopping, food and fun. Carroll bought the place for just $785,000 back in 2006, so he's looking to make a nice $1 million profit.

Extell’s Target-topping East Village luxury rental is now open; rents start at $3,695/month

Ambitiously dubbed EVGB–for "East Village's Greatest Building"–Extell Development's new rental building at 510 East 14th Street between Avenues A and B just hit the rental market. In addition to amenities like a fitness center, saltwater pool and rooftop deck, the new building is perhaps best known for its also-new retail anchor tenant, a two-level Target store, the chain’s first location in the neighborhood. The building's 110 market-rate and 50 affordable–the lottery for those launched recently–units are expected to be ready for occupancy by April. According to the building's just-launched website, available apartments range from studios for $3,695 a month to a three-bedroom unit for $12,425.

Justin Timberlake wants to offload his sleek Soho Mews penthouse for $8M

A year ago, Justin Timberlake, his wife Jessica Biel, and their young son Silas decided to call Tribeca home with a $20 million penthouse buy at 443 Greenwich Street. That left Timberlake with an unwanted penthouse at the Soho Mews, which the singer/actor/all-around celeb paid just over $6.5 million for in 2010. Curbed now reports that he's listed the sleek spread on the market for $7.995 million with Stribling broker-to-the-stars Jared Seligman. Any interested party will be buying into a celebrity-friendly condo that Meg Ryan and Jake Gyllenhaal have also called home.

Central Park’s Belvedere Castle will close for restoration next week

The Belvedere in Central Park was conceived as a miniature castle by Calvert Vaux, co-designer of the park, in 1869. It opened with some of the best views of the city's prized green space--the name Belvedere was chosen as it is Italian for "beautiful view." But the years have taken their toll on the stone structure, which has not been renovated since 1983. Now the Central Park Conservancy will close it to address issues like cracked pavement, a leaky roof, and plumbing issues. Starting this Monday, February 26th, Belvedere Castle will be off-limits to the public for its restoration, and will not reopen until 2019.

Supermodel Christie Brinkley recently picked up a penthouse in Tribeca for $29,500 per month while two of her Hamptons estates are still on the market. The gorgeous 3,000-square-foot apartment at 475 Greenwich Street boasts floor-to-ceiling windows, two terraces and incredible views of the Hudson River. Although Brinkley has called the Hamptons home for decades, one of her Sag Harbor estates is currently listed for $20 million and another, a little further down, for $29.5 million, as Variety reported.

Local multidisciplinary creative firm DFA has come up with a concept for the rehabilitation of Manhattan's rapidly disintegrating Pier 40 that would provide housing and other services, but would also adapt to the predicted rising sea levels of future New York City. Dezeen reports on the firm's fascinating idea for a future-proof housing, commercial and recreation complex that rises from the Hudson River in the West Village and would be able to remain above water in the event of rising sea levels, while addressing the city's dire need for affordable housing and the ability to resist flooding as a result of climate change.

DNCE singer Joe Jonas and fiancee Sophie Turner, star of "Game of Thrones," were recently spotted having a look at a Greenwich Village home in the newly-minted Annabelle Selldorf-designed condos that notoriously replaced the former Bowlmor Lanes at 21 East 12th Street. CityRealty recently reported on the progress of the under-construction rental building at 515 West 36th Street, bringing us snapshots of the 39-story Midtown West tower, which topped out over the summer; next to arrive was its sleek glass facade. The mixed-use building will contain 250 rental units upon completion. A lottery launched today for 63 of those units set aside as low- and middle-income studios, one- and two-bedroom apartments. How an East Village building went from gangster hangout to Andy Warhol’s Electric Circus

Fifty years ago this week, the Velvet Underground released their second album, "White Light/White Heat." Their darkest record, it was also arguably the Velvet’s most influential, inspiring a generation of alternative musicians with the noisy, distorted sound with which the band came to be so closely identified. Perhaps the place with which the Velvets have come to be most closely identified is the Electric Circus, the Andy Warhol-run East Village discotheque where they performed as the house band as part of a multi-media experience known as the "Exploding Plastic Inevitable." Many New Yorkers would be surprised to discover that the space the club once occupied at 19-25 St. Mark's Place has since been home to a Chipotle and a Supercuts. New middle-income lottery launches at Stuyvesant Town with apartments from $2,889 a month

A new housing lottery has just been launched at Stuyvesant Town/Peter Cooper Village. Households earning $86,670-$170,115/year are eligible to apply for one-bedrooms for $2,889/month and two-bedrooms for $3,543/month. Those who applied last year don't need to apply again; their names are already on a waiting list–though it's likely a long one; 6sqft previously noted that a 2016 waitlist for the downtown apartment complex stretched to 15,000 people. The deadline to apply for the new lottery is February 21, 2018.

The Urban Lens: See the last photographs of the abandoned Domino Sugar Factory

6sqft’s series The Urban Lens invites photographers to share work exploring a theme or a place within New York City. In this installment, Paul Raphaelson takes us through the Domino Sugar Factory before its redevelopment got underway. Are you a photographer who’d like to see your work featured on The Urban Lens? The term "ruin porn" was born out of generations of street photographers venturing into neglected, decaying, and off-limits spaces, but today it's become more of a mainstream trend to fluff one's Instagram feed. So when Brooklyn-based artist Paul Raphaelson received the chance in 2013 to be the last photographer allowed into the then-abandoned Domino Sugar Factory, he knew he didn't want his project to simply "estheticize surfaces while ignoring the underlying history." His stunning photos of the 135-year-old structure still "capture the sublime sense of spectacle," but they also accompany archival maps, newspaper clippings, corporate documents, and even interviews with former Domino Sugar Factory employees, all of which come together in his new book "Brooklyn’s Sweet Ruin: Relics and Stories of the Domino Sugar Refinery." Raphaelson shared his stunning images with us and also shared his thoughts on "urban exploration," his process in compiling a comprehensive history of Domino, and his thoughts on the recently approved plans for the site.

LPC sends glassy addition to Willem de Kooning’s former Union Square loft back to the drawing board

Back in November, the developer/owner of a pair of newly-landmarked buildings at 827-831 Broadway--noted for their cast-iron architecture and a rich cultural history that includes serving as home to artist Willem de Kooning--submitted a proposal for a four-story prismatic glass addition and landscaped roof terrace that architects DXA Studio say was influenced by de Kooning's work. Yesterday, the Landmarks Preservation Commission received the proposal with mixed reviews, feeling skeptical about whether or not cultural events should influence a building's architecture. After hearing testimony from a slew of local residents and preservationists who feel the glass topper is too large, the LPC decided to take no action on the plan, instead sending the team back to the drawing board to better detail the restoration aspects and reconsider the addition as perhaps shorter and further setback.
