This interactive map lets you find out your neighbors’ finances

Designed for the busybody in all of us, a new interactive map provides information about our neighbors' finances. Designed by student loan marketplace LendEDU, it shows the average income level, credit card and student loan debt, mortgage debt, and auto loan balances in every NYC neighborhood (h/t Brick Underground). While the Upper West Side, Tribeca, Battery Park and Lenox Hill all made the list for highest-earning areas, the highest credit ratings were all in Queens; Breezy Point, Douglaston and Clearview all had some of the best credit scores.

Interactive Map Shows How Your Neighborhood Has Recovered From the Housing Market Crash

Most Americans are finally starting to feel a bit of relief that the economy is getting back on its feet, but when it comes to the housing market, it's not as cut and dry as we might think. Analyzing data from Black Knight Financial Services from 2004 to 2015 (the bubble, burst, and recovery), the Washington Post asserts that the country's housing arc has only worsened inequality. "It also helps explain why the economic recovery feels incomplete, especially in neighborhoods where the value of housing — often the biggest family asset — has recovered little, if at all," they explain. For example, an average single-family home gained less than 14 percent in value over the past 11 years, but homes in the nation's priciest neighborhoods have gained 21 percent. And interestingly, in Bed-Stuy, Brooklyn, an area that saw a huge gentrification push during this time period, single-family home values have tripled and risen by 194 percent -- the largest increase of any metro area in the country. The Post has taken the data and compiled it into an interactive map that lets users simply input a zipcode to see how the area has fared.

FiDi Residents Get the Largest Tax Returns in the City, According to the IRS

It's time for Uncle Sam to start writing tax refund checks, and according to the IRS he'll be shelling out the most in the Financial District. As the Post reports, "One-percenters living in the Financial District have the highest taxable income, the biggest tax bills and get the largest refunds in New York City."  Though zip codes 10012 and 10013 (which make up parts of the West Village, Soho, Tribeca and the Lower East Side) are the most expensive in terms of real estate, it's FiDi's 10005 that is the richest in terms of earnings. The average annual taxable income for residents here is $948,979, and they pay $254,835 in taxes and get refunded $74,079.

Scofflaw Taxi Baron’s Big, Bold Tribeca Penthouse Back on the Market for $25M

The meter’s running again on the Tribeca penthouse belonging to Simon Garber, the yellow cab king (his company, SLS Jet Management, is one of the city's largest taxi medallion owners) who made news a few years ago for squeezing drivers with fake fees. In 2014 reports had the 6,300-square-foot duplex–plus 2,450 square feet of outdoor space–in the lavish 101 Warren Street condo ready to hit the market for $27 million. After only a few days the listing mysteriously disappeared, only to reappear as a rental, asking a traffic-stopping $100,000 a month. Last June, Compass re-introduced the listing for sale at $30 million, which soon slunk to $25 million, then disappeared again. Now it’s back on the market, this time at the slightly-trimmed but still hirsute $25 million.

A Massive Living Room Defines This Two-Bedroom Soho Co-op, Asking $2 Million

This two-bedroom, two-bathroom loft comes from a historic building at 37B Crosby Street, between Broome and Grand in Soho, that's been converted to a cooperative. Like many other downtown loft apartments, it is distinguished by its massive "great room"–an open living room, dining room and kitchen. Unlike the traditional loft, the bedrooms are built out in separate spaces. The design is completely modern and refined, paired with those great old loft details like high ceilings, big windows and exposed brick (there are even two working fireplaces throughout the apartment). It's all up for sale asking a cool $2 million. The apartment last sold in 2008 for $1.495 million.

Actress, Writer, Singer and Real Estate Scion Isabel Rose Lists $14 million Tribeca ‘Paradise’

You can add Tribeca pioneer and Mariah Carey neighbor to the long list of things that describe the ebullient seller of this 5,027-square-foot downtown mansion-in-the-sky at 90 Franklin Street. In an interview, Rose, a member of one of the city's most prominent real estate families (developing company Rose Associates manages more than 30,000 apartments and owns the Chelsea Landmark building among others) tells of how she moved to the pricey downtown neighborhood in 2000, when it was "filled with factories and a few brave artists," purchasing the apartment for (sitting down?) $3.4 million. The novelist, actress and singer who just released an album of classics and performs at venues like Joe's Pub, is the creative force behind the apartment's many art and music-related accents. The condominium residence, in one of Tribeca's many grand Deco-era buildings, needs no song and dance to give it legs. Its vast size (listed at five bedrooms, and there's room for at least two more), prime location on one of the neighborhood's most iconic streets, and luxurious no-detail-overlooked interiors do a fine job on their own of justifying the $14 million ask. In addition to Carey, notable building residents have include Ben Stiller and Bob Vila.

Airbnb Is Gobbling Up 20 Percent of Apartments in Popular Manhattan and Brooklyn Neighborhoods

As if it wasn't challenging enough to find a reasonable apartment in New York City, Airbnb is now taking up 20 percent of available units in popular Manhattan and Brooklyn zip codes, reports the Daily News. According to a study from New York Communities for Change and Real Affordability For All, the East Village is the most affected, with 28 percent of its apartments being rented as illegal hotel rooms on Airbnb. Additionally, the 20 most popular neighborhoods on the room sharing site "have lost 10% of their available housing units to Airbnb."

See the Last Days of Streit’s Matzo Factory Through Somber Black-and-White Photos

Whether you celebrate Passover or not, you've undoubtedly seen the pink boxes of Streit's Matzo in the grocery store each spring. For 90 years, Streit's has been churning out this iconic product at the rate of almost 900 pounds of matzo an hour on Rivington Street on the Lower East Side. But at the beginning of the year, New Yorkers received the sad news that the last family-owned matzo factory in the U.S. was purchased by a developer and the company would be moving its operations to New Jersey (a move also echoed this week by Junior's Cheesecake). But before they head across the Hudson, photographer Joseph O. Holmes has captured the final days of this fifth-generation working-class landmark, which Fast Co. Design aptly describes as "New York's Jewish Willy Wonka Factory." His black-and-white photos are somber, telling of his personal feelings about the loss of Streit's and the gentrification of the Lower East Side.

118 East 59th Street: Boutique Skyscraper To Rise in Hybrid Area Between Midtown and the UES

An exclusive condo tower is set to rise within the quickly changing area where Midtown East's commercial bustle tempers down into the elegant residential blocks of the Upper East Side. Located at 118 East 59th Street near Park Avenue, the unassuming site is being developed by Hong Kong-based Euro Properties, their first foray into the Manhattan market. The mid-block tower will soar 38 stories yet contain only 29 units–another example of the city’s new and somewhat oxymoronic building type, the boutique skyscraper, which typically contains fewer units than a standard six-story co-op building, and even fewer inhabitants. This 59th Street project will join the ranks of 432 Park Avenue (1,398 feet/104 units), 520 Park Avenue ( 781 feet/31 units), and 125 Greenwich Street (1,375 feet/128 units) as buildings with the greatest height-to-unit-count disparity.
