Archtober 2022: This year’s top architecture and design events

The festival that provides a behind-the-scenes look at some of New York City's most iconic buildings, public spaces, and cultural institutions returns for its 12th year next month. Held from October 1 through October 31, the Center for Architecture's Archtober is a celebration of architecture and design, with tours, talks, and events led by experts. While most of the events offered will be in-person, some will still be virtual or hybrid, which proved successful during the pandemic. Ahead, find just some of our favorite Archtober events happening this year, from exploring Art Deco gems of the Upper West Side to taking a tour of Brooklyn's tallest tower.

See NYC’s latest Flatiron Building lookalike, the Nova in Long Island City

Queens is getting its own Flatiron Building lookalike in Long Island City. Designed by Fogarty Finger, The Nova is a 24-story mixed-use high-rise located on a triangular plot of land, giving way to a curved structure that evokes the Manhattan landmark. Slated to open in September, the luxury tower has 86 condominium units and ground-floor retail.

Manhattan housing market makes record rebound to close out 2021

New York City real estate made a major comeback to close out 2021, experts say. According to a new report from Compass, condo and co-op sales volume hit $7 billion in the last quarter of the year, the highest of any fourth quarter on record. More than 3,400 apartments were sold in this quarter, between October 1 and December 31, up 79 percent from the previous year and the highest total in a Q4 since 2013. After Covid crippled much of the market in 2020, 2021 saw an impressive turnaround in Manhattan, particularly with the sales of luxury properties, new development condos, and townhouses.

Sales launch at curvy Olympia Dumbo, to be tallest and priciest condo in the neighborhood

The curvy, twisting tower rising in Dumbo launched sales this week, with condos starting at $1.75 million. Developed by Fortis Property Group and designed by Hill West Architects, Olympia Dumbo contains 76 residences ranging from one- to five-bedroom apartments. According to a spokesperson for the project, the building's top-floor penthouses, which will list for $16 million and $15.5 million, could become the neighborhood's most expensive condos ever sold if they sell at the asking prices.

New York City had its rainiest hour ever on Saturday night

On Saturday, between 10pm and 11pm, Central Park saw 1.94 inches of rainfall, the most ever recorded in a single hour in New York City, according to the National Weather Service, which has been keeping weather records since 1870. Just hours earlier, the park was evacuated during the city's massive Homecoming Concert for fears over impending weather brought on by Tropical Storm Henri. August 21st was also the wettest day since 2014.

After three years on the market, the grand Queen Anne townhouse at 280 Washington Avenue in Clinton Hill has closed for $9,050,000, setting a sales record for the neighborhood. The previous record-holder was 315 Vanderbilt Avenue, which sold for $7,200,000 in 2015. The 10,000-square-foot mansion is known as the Pfizer mansion as it was built in 1887 for Charles Erhart, co-founder of the Pfizer pharmaceutical company and brother-in-law to Charles Pfizer. The opulent home features historic details like an original Otis elevator, moldings and woodwork galore, eight fireplaces, and stained glass. There's also a sunken "speakeasy" party room, seven bedrooms, a wine cellar, and a beautifully landscaped backyard.
