Soho’s Only Freestanding Home Sells for a Discounted $6.9M

Soho's only freestanding home has found new owners. Bonnie and Seth Harris paid $6.887 million for the Broome Street townhouse, which initially popped up on the market a year ago, asking nearly $10 million. The two-bedroom home, listed by "Million Dollar Listing" star Ryan Serhant, has 3,430 square feet of living space with a 280-square-foot terrace and an additional 2,600 square feet of building rights.

NYCxDESIGN, New York City’s official celebration of all things design, hits town from May 8–19, 2015. Home to more designers than any other US metro area, NYC is one of the world’s design capitals. Now in its third year, NYCxDESIGN spotlights the city’s diverse design community and its contributions to our economy and everyday life and increases awareness of and appreciation for design with a collaborative mix of cultural and commercial offerings. The seemingly endless program lineup offers exhibitions, installations, trade shows, talks, launches, open studios and receptions all across the city to celebrate the efforts of everyone from students to stars of the local and international design community. This year will see hundreds of events covering topics from graphic design to architecture, technology and urban design to fashion and product design, interiors to landscape, furniture to design thinking and more. The Post reports that Piano—who just cut the ribbon to the new Whitney to rave reviews—has been chosen by Michael Shvo and Bizzi & Partners to design a brand new 290-foot tower at 100 Varick Street in up-and-coming Hudson Square bordering Soho.

Anyone who appreciates good design as much as a good pair of shoes will love this project by Aa Studio. The New York-based architecture firm focuses on space, proportion and light in home design. So given the task of a bedroom redesign that would also accommodate a large designer shoe collection, it's no surprise that the result feels so spacious. The gorgeous, bright master bedroom, located inside of a Soho penthouse, comes with sleek, grown-up cubby spaces that show off the impressive footwear display.

Soho’s MoMA Store May Shutter Because It Can’t Afford the Rent

Soho's rapidly rising rents have just taken another victim, this time the neighborhood institution potentially being booted is the area's beloved MoMA Design store at 81 Spring Street. Crain's reports that the owner of the three-level, 14,500-square-foot space wants an annual rent of $2.5 million—that's three times more than what the area was asking when MoMA took up residency over 13 years ago.

Reality Star Bethenny Frankel Revealed as Buyer of $4.2M Soho Loft

If you've been following the roller coaster that is reality television star Bethenny Frankel's life, you know that she started out as a single, struggling entrepreneur on "Real Housewives of New York City." She then launched the Skinny Girl margarita, sold the brand to Jim Beam for a reported $120 million, got married and had a daughter, filed for divorced, and rejoined the Housewives. On the recent season of the show, she considers herself "the richest homeless person in Manhattan," as her ex-husband stayed in their $5 million Tribeca apartment at 195 Hudson Street. We think Frankel's use of the word "homeless" is a little ridiculous considering she was splitting her time between lavish Hamptons rentals and high-end Manhattan hotels, but the Daily News has revealed that the Skinny Girl is actually the owner of apartment 2D at 22 Mercer Street in Soho. A nomad no more, Frankel is waiting to move into the gorgeous loft, which she bought about seven months ago for $4.2 million, until renovations are complete. But judging by the photos of the home, we can't imagine there'd be that much to change.

A Clawfoot Tub Resides in the Middle of This $2.7M Soho Loft’s Bedroom

Oh how we love Soho’s Cast Iron District. Its cobblestone streets and classic facades set the stage so beautifully for the lofts within. Wide open floor plans showered with an abundance of natural light courtesy of big, bold windows. Soaring 12-foot ceilings and original cast iron columns scattered about serving as a lovely reminder of the area’s industrial roots. And the 1,800-square-foot residence at 19 Greene Street is no exception—plus it comes with a little something extra for its $2.7M price tag: an unusually placed clawfoot tub in the home’s sleeping quarters. Though we’ve written about showers and bathtubs in kitchens (and scratched our heads at the thought), the current owner of this loft just might be on to something. How nice would it be to take a long, luxurious soak and then slip into bed for the evening? Of course, if the virtually wall-less layout leaves you feeling a bit too exposed, you can always avail yourself of the rain shower in the more traditional bathroom.

Mercer Street Loft by DHD Interiors Brings a Bit of Whimsy to a Classic Soho Space

After looking at a few projects from the talent over at DHD Interiors, we're realizing that what draws us to the firm's work is their ability to infuse an unexpected sense of whimsy into otherwise classic spaces, and their Mercer Street Loft is no exception. From the curious wall mural to the fanciful oversized chair in the living room, this Soho space surprises you when you least expect it. DHD was commissioned by the client to create a home that "celebrates both classic, historical elements and modern twists." They were also asked to incorporate art and the client's "adventurous, eclectic tastes," while maintaining original features like the hardwood floors, stripped cast iron columns, and tin ceilings.

When we wrote last year about the “out of this world” design of the 6,000-square-foot loft located at 145 Sixth Avenue in Soho, we had no idea the owners would decide to share their incredible home for a few months, offering the lucky renter a one-of-a-kind June-through-October experience in the city. New Yorker Spotlight: Gil Shapiro of Urban Archaeology Re-Imagines Beautiful Old Things

Native New Yorker Gil Shapiro founded Urban Archaeology in the early 1970s, when the salvaging movement was just catching on. With a collector’s–and creator's–eye and an entrepreneurial spirit, he began re-imagining architectural remnants as treasured additions to the home environment. This month the company has been preparing for an auction taking place on March 27th and 28th, handled by Guernsey’s auction house, when nearly 1,000 of their long-treasured pieces of history will be sold to prepare for a move to a new location. First opened in Soho in 1978, the store's early customers–including Andy Warhol and other denizens of what was undisputedly the epicenter of the art world–adored the unique and time-treasured aspects of Shapiro's restored architectural salvage pieces, yet they would always find ways they wished they could customize their favorite items. Finding that he excelled at bringing a fresh perspective to pieces of historical and architectural importance, he started reproducing individual pieces as well as creating new lines of bath fixtures and lighting, many of which originated in places like the Plaza Hotel, New York’s Yale Club and the St. Regis Hotel.

Soho Pad with ‘Ghost’-ly Past Returns to the Market as a $32,500/Month Rental

This pristine full-floor condo at 102 Prince Street has a lot to brag about. For starters, it's newly renovated and stunning, landing a spot in Interiors magazine’s "Best of 2011" issue. But its biggest claim to fame is that the apartment above is where Demi Moore and Patrick Swayze shot their iconic pottery scene in Ghost. The only thing more brag-worthy would be if Whoopi Goldberg dropped by occasionally to tell the future tenants, “You in danger, girl!” The unit sold for an impressive $13.8 million just this past March, netting the seller a $4.9 million profit (they had purchased it in March of 2013 for $8.9 million). The 2014 sale was the highest price anyone had paid for a non-penthouse unit in Soho. And now, after just six months, it's back on the market as a $32,500/month rental.
