New York City’s oldest retail candy shop is expanding for the first time in its over 85-year history. Economy Candy, which has been satisfying sweet tooths on the Lower East Side since 1937, will open a new location in Chelsea Market this week. Called “A Taste of Economy Candy,” the store is a mini version of the original sweet shop, offering a selection of vintage treats and classic candies on rotation every month.

Established on the Lower East Side during the Great Depression, Economy Candy brings joy and a sense of nostalgia to all who visit. The shop, which moved to its current location at 108 Rivington Street, in the 1980s, offers more than 2,000 items, with a lot of treats you can’t find anywhere else.
In Chelsea Market, A Taste of Economy Candy will provide a taste of the iconic candy store. Third-generation owners Mitchell Cohen, whose grandfather Morris “Moishe” Cohen took over the store after returning from World War II, and his wife Skye Greenfield Cohen said they felt the same magic of the Rivington Street shop in the halls of Chelsea Market.
“Economy Candy has always had a family-feel and we really wanted to find that in a new location away from the Lower East Side,” Skye Greenfield Cohen, co-owner of Economy Candy, said. “Walking into Chelsea Market we felt a similar sense of community and knew that, as the city’s oldest retail candy store, we would fit right in at the iconic NYC food market.”

Located off the main concourse of the market, A Taste of Economy Candy officially opens on February 7. The store will be open daily from 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.
As part of a special opening week celebration from February 7 through February 14, the candy shop will be handing out scratch-off tickets with any purchase. Each scratch-off guarantees a prize that can be redeemed at either the Chelsea Market or Rivington Street location.
