‘Bites of the Big Apple’ maps around-the-clock eating habits of New Yorkers

August 6, 2018

Not only are New Yorkers eating at all hours of the day, they’re also posting photos of the grub on Instagram. An animated map from Crimson Hexagon dubbed “Bites of the Big Apple” displays all of the food-related posts on Instagram published over a 24-hour period across the five boroughs. Not surprisingly, the number of photos of fried chicken, burgers and pizza increased after midnight, with snapshots of salads most prevalent around lunch time. And proving NYC is the city that never sleeps, photos of coffee were popular at every hour.

“From sushi in Manhattan to burgers in Brooklyn, explore what people are eating and drinking around the clock, and where they’re having it, using real Instagram data,” Crimson Hexagon writes as an introduction to the website.

The company identified the most popular foods and drinks in NYC on Instagram by looking at associated hashtags. Posts with specific tags (“coffee,” “beer,” “noodles,” etc.) were then collected. The map covers the city’s eating habits between May 6 and May 12.

The clock runs through a day on its own, as food emojis pop up across the city, depicting the time of an Instagrammed food photo. Users can start or pause the clock, move forward or backward in time, and filter the photos by food emoji. Boroughs can be selected, or the map can be zoomed out to see the eating habits of New Yorkers across the city.
