An initiative launched this week to donate free Broadway show tickets to frontline workers. As first reported by Variety, the ticket website TodayTix has started the “Save a Seat” fund to reserve the best seats at shows for essential workers when theater returns following the coronavirus pandemic. The site has also rebranded as TommorrowTix, to give artists and theater lovers something to look forward to during this difficult time.

The group hopes to send more than 1,000 frontline workers to see a show, “so that the performers, artists, and creators come back to an audience of heroes,” according to TodayTix ‘s website. TodayTix will work with charities and organizations to reach a wide range of essential workers.

“There are so many heroes now that are saving our lives every day and helping us,” Brian Fenty, CEO of TodayTix, told Variety. “If there is a frontline hero that is putting their life on the lines to make our world and our economy and our health to continue to be front and center, we want to them to have a chance to engage in this.”

According to Variety, the company collected enough funds to start the program this week with 1,000 donated seats. Find out more about the “Save a Seat” initiative and how to donate here.

The city’s 41 Broadway theaters have been closed since March 12. Last month, the Broadway League announced they would suspend all performances through June 7, but industry insiders expect theaters to be closed for much longer. Not only one of the city’s most important forms of art and entertainment, Broadway is also an economic engine. According to the New York Times, the industry grossed $1.8 billion last season.
