Between giving Connie, its vintage airplane cocktail lounge shared billing with “The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel” in a publicity partnership last December and offering runway ice skating, the TWA Hotel at JFK Airport is doing its best to share its Eero Saarinen-designed mid-century fabulousness with the public rather than keeping it under wraps. A new opening adds yet another reason to visit the cool transportation destination: The hotel’s rooftop bar is being transformed into a “runway chalet” for the rest of the winter season.
A rooftop pool is cool enough, but the new rooftop bar and observation deck have even more international getaway cachet as a retro Alpine hideaway. Decked out in Scandi chalet decor and retro ski gear, the space is ready for snowsuits and bathing suits alike.
And the tented and heated 1960s ski lodge-themed hideaway, operated by Gerber Group, which also runs the Pool Bar, Sunken Lounge and Connie, is serving food and drinks along with the cozy atmosphere. There’s also a vintage fireplace–and fondue (cheese and chocolate), of course.
And don’t forget the 95-degree heated pool. The Runway Chalet at The Pool Bar is open from 11 AM to 11 PM daily, with more information available here. And if you’re more Peggy Fleming than Penny Pitou, The Runway Rink is still open (through February) for skating and free ice skating performances.
