The history of how the New York Public Library got its start Downtown

This year, the New York Public Library is celebrating its 125th anniversary. With 53 million items and 92 locations across Manhattan, the Bronx, and Staten Island, the NYPL is the largest municipal library in the world. It’s also the steward of some of New York’s greatest landmarks, reflecting a century and a quarter of Gotham’s history, and in some cases even more. The roots of this library system can be found in Greenwich Village, the East Village, and Noho. The main antecedents of the NYPL which formed the foundation of today’s system— the Astor Library, the Lenox Library, and the New York Free Circulating Library – all began in these neighborhoods just below 14th Street. As a result, this is where New York’s oldest public library buildings and the oldest building housing an NYPL branch are located -- the latter ironically having been where great works of literature were banned and censored before it became a library.

This estate in quaint St. James, NY--located in Suffolk County on the north shore of Long Island overlooking Stony Brook Harbor--is indeed, as the listing describes it, a piece of architectural history. Built in 1895 by famed and scandalous architect Stanford White of McKim, Mead and White (the firm who penned such icons as the Washington Square Arch and the former Pennsylvania Station in Manhattan), the rambling New England-style 16-bedroom estate spans 8,000 square feet and sits on 3.75 acres. Though it calls to mind a time long past, the home's historic charm is more literal than most; it will likely take substantial effort beyond its $1.5 million ask to make it the 21st-century residence it undoubtedly could be.

With a 10,442-square-foot interior, 50 Crows Nest Road–known more casually as Crows Nest–in the Westchester County village of Bronxville, NY seems worth its $3.5 million ask (recently reduced from $4.4 million) on that information alone. This 1849 Gothic Revival manor house was built of local stone and sits on 1.3 acres of hilltop land–with the Manhattan skyline visible in the distance. Sarah Jessica Parker may be selling one of her West Village townhouses

For being such a high-profile couple, Sarah Jessica Parker and Matthew Broderick have managed to keep a fairly low profile in the West Village, but when it comes to their real estate, the gossip is inevitable. The latest whisperings come via a source who told the Post that the couple is selling their townhouse on Charles Street for $19 million off-market. In 2016, Parker and Broderick dropped $34.5 million on two adjacent townhouses on West 11th Street with the intention of combining them into one mega-mansion. While the work has been ongoing, they've been living on Charles Street, so perhaps the sale plans means their new home is ready.

The "Grey's Anatomy" star bought the eight-acre site for $950,000 in 2011, and in 2013, had the current modern-farmhouse constructed, which she then designed herself. In addition to its gorgeous decor, the residence boasts beautifully manicured lawns and a heated, Gunite pool.

Asking $50M, the Greenwich Village Milbank House is twice as wide as the average townhouse

Between Russian-born billionaire Roman Abramovitch's three-townhouse Upper East Side combo, Sarah Jessica Parker's Village two-fer plans, and the many similar but less newsworthy grandiose schemes by modern-day moguls to collect and build dream castles, the mega-mansion may seem like a sign of 21st-century excess. But the practice has a long history, as evidenced by this 54.5-foot-wide Greenwich Village property at 11 West 10th Street that just hit the market for a trophy-level $50 million, which could set a townhouse record below 34th Street, according to the New York Times. Built by renowned architect Ernest Flagg in the early 1800s, the duo was combined in the early 1900s by investor Jeremiah Milbank, creating a 16,560-square-foot, L-shaped property surrounded by 5,690 square feet of private terrace. Today, it's been renovated from stem to stern and is ready to welcome a new decade's decadence.

T-Mobile's departing CEO John Legere first listed his palatial penthouse at 91 Central Park West for $22 million in February 2018 and progressively dropped the price to just shy of $18 million in his search for a buyer. In the end, he didn't have to look far. Giorgio Armani—who already owns a unit on the same floor—recently purchased the residence for roughly $17.5 million, as the Wall Street Journal first reported. The one-time home of publishing giant William Randolph Hearst sprawls over 3,000 square feet and comes with a 1,700-square-foot private terrace overlooking the park. Armani will combine the residence with his existing, similarly sized unit and take over the entire floor.

Demi Moore may have sold her remarkable apartment in the San Remo at 145 Central Park West for $45 million in 2007–two years after first attempting to sell at a whopping $75M–but the rare penthouse in one of the venerable building's two beaux-arts towers is still a star. And the south tower triplex is for sale again, this time asking $50 million, the Wall Street Journal reports. As if the 8,000-square-foot sky mansion didn't have enough of its own cachet, neighbor Bono–who bought his apartment from Steve Jobs–can always add more. The seller is known only via the LLC “M2 Trust.”

Seinfeld fans may recognize the exterior of this townhouse at 408 West 20th Street as the home of character Elaine Benes, though current owners Harry Azorin and Lori Monson, who bought the home for $950,000 in 1995, don’t get many questions about it anymore. “Maybe twice a month, someone would walk by, and they’d say, ‘Is this Elaine’s house?’...I’d say, about 10 years ago, it stopped,” Monson told the Wall Street Journal. Originally built in 1839, the residence is now on the market for $8.65 million. Even though Seinfeld was largely set on the Upper West Side, the house is actually located “on the most desirable street in Chelsea,” as the listing boasts, “perfectly positioned” on historic Cushman Row and overlooking the General Theological Seminary.

Billionaire Ken Griffin really likes 220 Central Park South. The hedge fund mogul picked up two more apartments at the Robert A.M. Stern-designed skyscraper last month, less than a year after he bought a record-breaking $240 million penthouse there. The New York Post first spotted the sales, which includes apartments 20H for $1.89 million and 20J for $2.06 million, bringing his total investments at the property to roughly $244 million.

Pricing revealed for starchitect-designed Waterline Square rentals, with studios from $3,938/month

Update 10/10/19: More details about Waterline Square rentals were released on Tuesday, following the official lease launch last month. At the three-tower Upper West Side development, studios start at $3,938/month, one-bedrooms at $5,425/month, two-bedrooms at $8,625/month, three-bedrooms at $9,933/month, and four-bedrooms at $15,000/month. These prices include concessions for three months of free rent on a 12-month lease. Currently, the priciest unit available to rent is a $19,208/month four-bedroom at One Waterline Square, which measures just over 2,200 square feet. After topping out nearly two years ago, the trio of glassy high-rise towers known as Waterline Square on Monday kicked off leasing for its rental units. GID Development tapped three major architects, Richard Meier, Kohn Pedersen Fox (KPF), and Rafael Viñoly, to design the Upper West Side buildings, which include roughly 260 condos, 800 rental units, and 100,000 square feet of amenities. Rentals, ranging from studios to four-bedroom apartments, start at $4,130 per month, without concessions. Hill West Architects serve as the project's architect of record.

Asking $39 million, the three-story Darlington Mansion sits on over 12 acres in Mahwah and contains 58 rooms.
