Roberta’s, one of New York’s most well-known pizzerias, will finally open its new location next to Madison Square Garden this year. As first reported by Eater New York, the Bushwick-born restaurant signed a lease in November 2022 for a 5,200-square-foot space within the Vornado Realty Trust-developed Penn District, a new mixed-use campus around Penn Station, with plans to open last fall. New signage on the building, located at Penn 1 East between 33rd and 34th Streets says Roberta’s will now open this spring.

The Penn District Roberta’s will occupy two floors and feature a roof deck with outdoor patio seating, according to the New York Post. Gelato company Anita, which has locations in Israel, Australia, Europe, and two in New York City, will occupy space on the ground floor. A recently opened Los Tacos No. 1 restaurant is next door.

“We tend to gravitate toward interesting neighborhoods with a rich history and abundance of creativity, similarly to the opening of our original Roberta’s in Bushwick,” Brandon Hoy, co-owner of Roberta’s, told the New York Post in 2022.

According to the website for 1 Penn, Roberta’s and Anita Gelato will open in March.

Currently under construction, the Penn District has brought several new retail and dining options to the area with more on the way. At 1 Penn, new restaurants and cafes include Blue Ribbon Sushi & Steak, Blue Bottle, The Landing, Office Hours, The Rutherford, and Avenida. Work on the pedestrian plaza on 33rd Street is still underway.

Robert’s first opened in Bushwick in 2008 and became known for its Neapolitan-style pies. The restaurant has since expanded to other New York City locations, Domino Park and the Urbanspace at 230 Park, and further, including Montauk, Nashville, and Culver City.
