If you’re already making Oktoberfest plans to hit up the Standard, High Line‘s beer garden, you might want to think about imbibing a bit earlier, as the new Light Cave art installation is only on view until the end of September.
Presented by FriendsWithYou and commissioned by the Standard Hotel and the Art Production Fund, this public art project “is a symbol of light and connectivity in an architectural form.” The inflatable work, which evokes a prehistoric figure and a cavern, spans the entire outdoor plaza in front of the hotel and pulsates with energy and light, creating a sensory rich experience.
Measuring 55′ x 25′ x 14′, Light Cave is the largest sculpture to date by FriendsWithYou. The semi-transparent, nebulous-shaped work is described by the artists as a “cathedral of the spirit.” It prompts viewers to “explore the vibrantly colored cave, encouraging communal and personal experience.”
For maximum engagement, Light Cave was positioned at the hotel’s entrance, so all guests walk under its incandescent, glowing canopy. It is on view until the end of September.
FriendsWithYou is an art collaborative founded in 2002 by Samuel Borkson and Arturo Sandoval III with the goal of spreading “Magic, Luck, and Friendship™.” Artists work in various mediums, from paintings to live performances, and the group’s mission is to affect world culture by creating spiritual awareness and power, joyous interaction.
