Tired of the bitter cold? Already devising warm-weather activities for the summer? Thankfully, the Trust for Governors Island just made planning a lot easier. The Trust announced on Wednesday its plan to open a temporary glamping retreat to the Island from Collective Hotels & Retreats, a group that brings the accommodations of a five-star hotel to the outdoors. As part of a three-year license, the company will transform six acres of the 172-acre island into an “environmentally-friendly overnight lodging retreat with unobstructed views of the Statue of Liberty.”

The retreat will be able to house up to 100 overnight guests who can select from two different lodging options. Each “luxury” tent includes either a King-size bed or two single beds, with 1,500 thread-count linens, down duvet and Pendleton blankets. These tents boast private decks equipped with Adirondack chairs and of course, an over-the-bed chandelier. Rates for one luxury tent start at $500 per night.
For $150 per night, the “premium bell tent” can accommodate up to two guests with a choice of a queen bed or two single beds. Guests staying at these tents share a bathroom, which will have individual rain-style showers.
Collective Retreats will bring Three Peaks Lodge dining and a landscaped public lawn for special events like live music, recreation and wellness activities. According to the Trust, the company will host special community nights for non-profit youth organizations.

And next to the glamping retreat, New York Carousel Entertainment will return to Governors Island this season with more family-friendly fun. Beginning on May 1, the company will bring a pop-up amusement park with a zip line, refreshment station and shaded area to the Island. There will also be a 25-foot high climbing wall and a 3,600-square-foot “Amazen’ Maze.”
Collective Retreats and NY Carousel Entertainment responded to a request for proposal that the Trust issued in October, with the goal of bringing entertainment and cultural activities to the island. Governors Island will open to the public on May 1 through October 31.
