Some New Yorkers have complained that they miss the old subway platform kiosks that were recently replaced by vending machines, seeing the change as a sign that human interaction is becoming a thing of the past. Data Vandals has an even better idea: As part of the MTA’s Vacant Unit Activation Program, the artist-activists created the Data Vandals Newsstand, a data-art gallery on the downtown 6-train platform at 51st Street and Lexington Avenue. A colorful mural outside the former kiosk reveals New York’s history in fascinating detail for the 52,000 riders that pass through the station daily. Creative visualization of vital data includes the country of origin for each of the city's 8.8 million residents anchored by a freshly updated Statue of Liberty and a six-foot-tall rat mascot offering facts about the 6-train stops. Inside, the kiosk turns into a center for community conversation, with rotating surveys, changing exhibitions, in-person events, talks, music, and a free newspaper.

Mayor Zohran Mamdani's administration is expected to reach a settlement with developers that cancels the Haven Green project, a 123-unit rental for low-income seniors on the site of the Elizabeth Street Garden, in exchange for a new affordable development on a vacant Lower East Side lot. On Wednesday, Mamdani said the actions of former Mayor Eric Adams, who designated the city-owned site as parkland last year, requiring state legislature approval for development, made it "nearly impossible" to move ahead with the housing project.

New York will test new thermal tech that cools down NYC subway platforms

Mayor Zohran Mamdani and state officials this week announced plans to cool New York City subway platforms that turn into saunas during the summer. The mayor, Gov. Kathy Hochul, and the Metropolitan Transportation Authority are teaming up to study thermal energy networks (TENs) at the Brooklyn Bridge-City Hall and Chamber Street complex, among the city's hottest subway platforms. The technology, the first in the nation installed in a transit system, involves capturing, storing, and recycling the excess heat to surrounding buildings in the winter. The TENs study will be part of a thorough renovation of the Chambers Street station, one of the city's oldest.

Lower East Side’s former Essex Street Market to become 99-unit rental

The site of the historic Essex Street Market on the Lower East Side is slated to become a mixed-use development with 99 apartments. As one of the last remaining undeveloped parcels in the city's decade-long Essex Crossing redevelopment, 100 Essex Street will rise 10 stories and include 26 affordable apartments, ground-floor retail, and a new elevator and escalator for the Delancey Street subway station. Developed by Delancey Street Associates and designed by S9 Architecture, the new building will rise on the site of the historic market, which opened in 1940 and closed its doors in 2019. Many vendors moved to a new and larger Essex Street Market across the street as part of the redevelopment.

East River’s self-filtering floating pool delayed until 2027

New Yorkers will have to wait a little longer for the self-filtering floating pool in the East River. Initially slated for a pilot this summer, the +POOL team announced on X on Wednesday that while construction is nearly complete, ongoing work on the Brooklyn Bridge-Montgomery Coastal Resilience project will delay testing of the prototype until at least 2027. More than 15 years in the making, the project reached a major milestone in summer 2024, when Gov. Kathy Hochul and former Mayor Eric Adams selected Pier 35 as its official location.

Work on the Park Avenue Viaduct, a critical Metro-North corridor in Upper Manhattan, has been completed 60 months ahead of schedule and $195 million under budget. Gov. Kathy Hochul on Monday announced the completion of the project, which replaced 196 bridge structures and more than 12,600 feet of railroad infrastructure over 28 weekends. The $765 million project aims to strengthen the reliability of the corridor, which carries 98 percent of Metro-North service and all trains traveling to and from Grand Central Terminal.

The giant shopping bag sign proclaiming Macy's Herald Square as "The World's Largest Store" was removed over the weekend, revealing a 100-year-old building that had been hidden for decades. The red-and-white billboard, which had wrapped around the corner of the building on 34th Street and Broadway for 60 years (through several iterations over the years), will be replaced with something more modern, as the New York Post first reported, but it's unclear exactly what will be displayed. For a short time, though, the 240,000 pedestrians who pass the corner every day will get a peek for the first time at what was behind the iconic sign: a five-story building that is one of the city's most famous "holdouts" in real estate.

The Whitney Museum of American Art is set to host a career-spanning exhibition this fall celebrating legendary pop artist Roy Lichtenstein, featuring more than 130 works exploring the evolution of his artistic career. Opening October 11, "Roy Lichtenstein: Like New" will examine the artist's engagement with mass culture and his belief that no work is ever truly "stable," but instead exists in a constant state of duplication, reproduction, and being "made new." Gotham Organization, Fisher Brothers, and Mural Real Estate Group will turn the state-owned site at 621 West 45th Street into two connected skyscrapers with 1,127 homes, including about 338 affordable units, new facilities for the museum, and a public park that connects to the existing pedestrian bridge. The project stems from a request for proposals issued in February 2025 for one of the largest remaining undeveloped parcels on Manhattan’s Far West Side.

Manhattan and Brooklyn rents have reached new highs as the cost of living continues to rise across New York City. A report from the Corcoran Group found that the median rent for market-rate residential buildings in Manhattan reached $5,295 per month at the start of summer, up 3 percent since May and 8 percent year over year. Across the East River, Brooklyn’s median rent for market-rate units reached $4,350 last month, an 8 percent annual increase. The continued surge reflects the city’s limited housing inventory, with Manhattan’s already-tight vacancy rate falling from 1.57 percent in May to 1.49 percent in June.

Art Deco bricks from original Lincoln Tunnel entrance are for sale

The Port Authority of New York and New Jersey is selling historic Art Deco bricks from the Lincoln Tunnel's original retaining walls, built between 1937 and 1945, as they are dismantled to make way for the new Midtown Bus Terminal. The distinctive bricks were used in the walls outside the New York approach of the New Jersey-bound north tube and along Dyer Avenue. As part of a broader effort to promote sustainability and reuse, the agency will list the bricks for $2.25 each, allowing New Yorkers and architecture buffs to own a piece of history from the same era that produced the Empire State Building, Radio City Music Hall, and other Art Deco landmarks.
