Elizabeth Street Garden will remain open in deal reached with city
One of the city's most contentious development battles has come to an end. Plans to turn the Elizabeth Street Garden in Nolita into affordable housing for seniors have been halted in a deal announced by Mayor Eric Adams on Monday. According to the mayor, Council Member Christopher Marte will now support the rezoning of three sites in his district to allow for 623 new affordable homes in exchange for preserving the one-acre community garden, ending a decade-long fight over the site.

Brooklyn Botanic Garden sound installation remembers Covid victims
To mark the fifth anniversary of the Covid-19 pandemic, the Brooklyn Botanic Garden is bringing back a sound installation that originally debuted in 2021. Created by NYC-based composer Michael Gordon, "loved." is a site-specific installation featuring seven vibraphones playing meditative compositions every hour. On view from March 15 to 30, the installation provides a space for visitors to sit, reflect, and remember the people or things they lost during the pandemic.

Penn Station proposal moves Madison Square Garden, calls for classical train hall
A new proposal for the long-stalled redesign of Penn Station would move Madison Square Garden across the street and replace the existing station with a new train hall reminiscent of the its original grandeur. Spearheaded by architect and former chief urban designer for New York City Alexandros Washburn, the "Grand Penn" plan would create a public space the size of Bryant Park and a commuter train hall inspired by the original station, while relocating the famous arena across the street. The plan now joins two stalled proposals, including one from the Metropolitan Transportation Authority and another from a private developer.

Fordham’s Lincoln Center sculpture garden debuts new exhibition, including iconic ‘Hippo Ballerina’
New York City's beloved hippo sculpture, and other whimsical works of art, can now be found at Fordham University's Lincoln Center campus. On display through December, "The Magis Sculpture Exhibition" adds 11 new pieces to the university's outdoor sculpture garden, between West 60th and West 62nd Streets. Inspired by fables, art history, music, modern animation, and more, the exhibition complements the garden's 10 sculptures on permanent display. A highlight of the new installation is Bjørn Okholm Skaarup’s "Hippo Ballerina"—a 15-foot hippo sculpture that draws inspiration from Edgar Degas’ "Little Dancer Aged Fourteen" and the dancing hippos from Walt Disney’s "Fantasia."

A corpse flower is about to bloom at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden
New York City's favorite funky-smelling flower is preparing to bloom in Brooklyn. "Amorphophallus gigas," nicknamed the "corpse flower" for the rotting flesh odor it emits, is expected to blossom at the Brooklyn Botanic Garden this week. The foul flower blooms every two to 10 years and only lasts a few days.

Deal reached to build 355-unit development across from Brooklyn Botanic Garden
Several years and project iterations later, a new mixed-use building will rise across from the Brooklyn Botanic Garden. Developer Continuum Company and Council Member Crystal Hudson reached a deal to develop a 10-story project with 355 apartments, 30 percent of which will be income-restricted, at 962-972 Franklin Avenue in Crown Heights. The revised rezoning proposal, approved by the City Council's subcommission on zoning on Tuesday, features additional changes to the roof slope to minimize shadows on the garden's rare plant collection.

Elizabeth Street Garden served eviction notice by city
Despite last-ditch efforts from New York City icons like Martin Scorsese and Robert De Niro, Little Italy's Elizabeth Street Garden received an eviction notice from the city this week. The nonprofit that oversees the garden said they have two weeks to vacate as the city moves forward with plans to build affordable senior housing and retail space on the unique green space. Elizabeth Street Garden said it plans to "continue to work with our legal team to address the eviction."

Crown Heights project near Brooklyn Botanic Garden may be scrapped despite city approval
After securing a key approval from the city after years of delays, the developer behind a controversial residential project near the Brooklyn Botanic Garden said they plan to withdraw the application. The City Planning Commission (CPC) on Monday voted to approve a modified rezoning of 962-972 Franklin Avenue in Crown Heights that would result in fewer shadows cast on the garden from a new 14-story building developed by Continuum Company. But despite the approval, an attorney for Continuum's Ian Bruce Eicher told The Real Deal the group plans to withdraw the application because the modifications make the project impossible to finance.

Celebrities join last-minute effort to save Elizabeth Street Garden
With its eviction looming, Little Italy's Elizabeth Street Garden is throwing one last hail mary. New York celebrities Robert De Niro, Martin Scorsese, and Patti Smith penned letters to Mayor Eric Adams this week, asking him not to build an affordable senior housing development on the city-owned site of the community garden, a plan approved in 2019 but delayed by legal challenges. The A-listers join thousands of residents who oppose replacing the unique green space with apartments, despite the city's current housing crisis. Demolition of the garden could begin next month after the nonprofit that runs the space lost two separate court battles.

A Tim Burton-themed light trail is coming to the New York Botanical Garden this fall. Running on select nights from September 27 through November 30, the light experience inspired by "Tim Burton's The Nightmare Before Christmas" will illuminate the garden with iconic characters, scenes, and songs from the classic Disney film. The immersive outdoor experience features over 8,300 square feet of stunning light installations, interactive video projections, LED lighting, and 3D-printed sculptures of Jack Skellington, Sally, and other beloved characters from the movie.

Brooklyn Children’s Museum begins $15 million garden makeover
Work has begun on the $15 million revitalization of outdoor space at the Brooklyn Children's Museum. The city's Departments of Cultural Affairs and Design and Construction this week broke ground on the project to beautify the Crown Heights museum's courtyards and terraces and create 20,000 square feet of accessible outdoor programming space for young New Yorkers and their families. The project is being funded by the Mayor's Office, City Council, and the Brooklyn Borough President's office.

Fantastical flowers and peculiar plants: New York Botanical Garden opens ‘Wonderland’ exhibit
The New York Botanical Garden has fallen down the rabbit hole. The enchanting exhibition "Wonderland: Curious Nature" debuted on Saturday, transforming the garden's 250 acres into a whimsical paradise inspired by Lewis Carroll's classic children's tale "Alice's Adventures in Wonderland" and its sequel stories. On view through October 27, the exhibition includes a 12-foot White Rabbit made of plants, larger-than-life mushrooms, gardens of the Victorian era, a large-scale chess set designed by Yoko Ono, and more.
