$18M Brooklyn Heights townhouse is the borough’s most expensive listing

September 13, 2019

Brooklyn Heights is an expensive neighborhood to be sure, but the five-story townhouse at 88 Remsen Street, asking $18 million, takes the top spot for the entire borough, where the most expensive sale to date was around $15.5 million (h/t Curbed). For that price, you’re certainly getting your money’s worth. The five-story home offers a separate apartment on the ground floor, with an owners’ quadraplex above, complete with decks and harbor views. The historic home has lots of restored original details. But the most unique part of this pricey property is the carriage house that’s included in the sale; across a quiet alley, this quaint structure is thoroughly renovated and includes a garage, a full kitchen, and a skylit recreation room.

Both buildings have been restored with every convenience of modern living while keeping their historic character intact. Pristine moldings, fireplace mantles, 12-foot ceilings, and inlaid marquetry floors join central air and recessed lighting (but sadly no elevator).

The main quadraplex begins with an impressive parlor floor. An elegant entryway opens into a classic grand living room.

The triple-parlor configuration features a custom-built shaker kitchen in the back. The kitchen opens onto a secluded terrace and garden.

The third floor features a luxurious master bedroom suite with a bay-windowed sitting area, built-in closets, and two baths. Also on this floor is an additional large bedroom with an ensuite bath.

The fourth floor offers two more large bedrooms, both with ensuite baths as well as a laundry room and a private deck. On the fifth floor is a home office with a wall of windows plus another bedroom and two baths. Atop the townhouse is a roof deck with the views of brownstone Brooklyn and the New York Harbor and skyline that make the neighborhood so enviable.

On the home’s garden floor is a separate apartment/suite with a spacious kitchen and living area and bath. This unit opens onto an enclosed back garden.

The basement has not been forgotten: Down here is a finished rec room/screening room complete with pool table, jukebox, and foosball table.

Accessed through a rare-in-the-city dead-end alley, a sweet carriage house adjoins the back garden of the townhouse. A garage is at the center of this unique self-contained house. The upper level is a beautifully renovated loft-like one-bedroom apartment. At the basement level is a unique grotto-like space that contains a screening room with a half bath and a glass-enclosed rain shower lit from above by a stained glass ceiling.
