Copper-Clad Writer’s Cabin by Andrew Berman Changes Color with the Sun

November 3, 2014

Some people need a tranquil, secluded space to create, and this stunning writing studio by Andrew Berman Architect is the perfect place to fulfill that need. Located in Bellport, New York, on Long Island’s South Shore, this unique shelter is certainly eye-catching as it’s entirely clad in copper. In addition to boasting a large central window that overlooks the green landscape, this charming abode also changes color depending on the light. Talk about an ideal spot for daydreaming and curing writer’s block…

Commissioned as a library and writing studio for a historian, Berman’s beautiful cabin can be reached only by foot through a stand of trees. It sits at the threshold of an open field and woods overlooking a calming tidal stream. Conceived as a simple structure, it features an angular design wrapped in a metal skin.

The brilliant studio has a mutable presence within its luscious green surroundings. Its copper cladding shields and shifts shades to meld with its surroundings depending on the light of the day, the viewing angle, and the season. When the sun is strong, the building appears reflective and bright, but when the sun goes down it turns into a dark matte tint.

The cabin’s interiors are angled, filled with light, and covered in wood. Douglas fir cabinets, books, and minimalist furnishings are all part of this perfect space designed for deep thought and inspirational words.
