Applications are now being accepted for 42 affordable units in the Bronx. Located at 740 Brook Avenue in Woodstock, the nine-story mixed-use building offers tenants brand-new residences and a variety of amenities. New Yorkers earning 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, and 100 percent of the area median income, or between $16,183 for a single person and $165,500 for a household of seven, can apply for the apartments which range from $397/month studios to $2,545/month three bedrooms.

Target’s newest Bronx location opens near Fordham University

Target's New York City takeover shows no signs of slowing. The chain retailer will open a new store in the Bronx on Sunday, becoming the 96th location in the greater New York City area and fourth in the borough. The store, located at 215 East Fordham Road, joins many commercial businesses around Fordham Plaza, just off the Grand Concourse and near Fordham University.

Tremont Residences brings 119 much-need affordable apartments to West Farms in the Bronx

A 100 percent affordable housing building opened this week in the Bronx's West Farms, an area with some of the lowest median household incomes in the country. Dubbed the Tremont Residences, the 11-story tower at 1973 Daly Avenue has 119 units, with about 60 percent of the apartments set aside for formerly homeless New Yorkers. The $50.6 million development includes on-site support for those who need support to live independently, according to officials.

A housing lottery opened this week for 153 apartments at a newly constructed senior housing development in the Bronx. Located at 1701 Purdy Street, Parkchester Gardens is an eight-story rental with 221 units, 67 of which are set aside for formerly displaced seniors. Applicants must have at least one household member who is 62 years of age or older and earn no more than $60,050 annually.

New affordable housing building in the Bronx has a rooftop greenhouse and aquaponic farm

A new housing development with more than 100 deeply affordable and supportive apartments, a rooftop greenhouse, and an aquaponic urban farming system officially opened last week. Located at 2865 Creston Avenue in Bedford Park, the project was developed by homeless services nonprofit Project Renewal. Bedford Green House includes social services for residents and amenities that center around healing through nature.

NYC’s iconic High Bridge will stay open later this summer

New York City's oldest surviving bridge will be open for two additional hours this summer. A new pilot program will extend the hours of the High Bridge, which provides a pedestrian link between Manhattan and the Bronx, to 10 p.m. daily through the end of September. Announced by Mayor Eric Adams and NYC Parks Commissioner Sue Donoghue last week, the new pilot moves the bridge's closing time from 8 p.m. to 10 p.m., allowing New Yorkers to enjoy the scenic walkway over the Harlem River for longer during the hot summer months.

The Universal Hip Hop Museum (UHHM) topped out in the South Bronx last week as part of the huge mixed-use project Bronx Point. Trump Organization can keep running Bronx golf course, judge rules

A judge on Friday said the Trump Organization can continue to operate its golf course in the Bronx, ruling the city wrongfully ended the company's contract. A few days after the January 6 insurrection, former Mayor Bill de Blasio announced plans to terminate several agreements with Donald Trump's company, including the contract for Trump Golf Links at Ferry Point. Last June, the Trump Organization sued New York City, arguing the city's effort was politically motivated and had no legal merit.

NYC opens safe haven site in the South Bronx for homeless New Yorkers

Mayor Eric Adams announced on Tuesday the opening of the Morris Avenue Safe Haven site in the Bronx. The new facility will expand shelter access with 80 beds as well as offer on-site medical, mental health, and substance abuse services to New Yorkers who need them. The new facility is part of Adams' Subway Safety Plan to add 500 low-barrier beds for homeless New Yorkers, with 350 of them to be made available this week.

New report finds neighborhoods in the Bronx lead the city in missed mortgage payments

Two years after the start of the coronavirus pandemic, Bronx neighborhoods are leading the city in mortgage delinquency rates, according to a new analysis by the Center for NYC Neighborhoods. Plus, the city's majority Black neighborhoods were most at risk for foreclosures, with these ZIP codes having an average of 8.48 percent of homeowners who had failed to make their mortgage payment for more than 30 days, as first reported by The City.

New order from Adams boosts fire safety inspections at residential buildings after deadly Bronx fire

New York City officials are working to bolster fire safety in the wake of the devasting Bronx apartment fire in January that killed 17 people. Mayor Eric Adams on Sunday signed an executive order that aims to improve coordination between the city's Fire Department and inspectors from the Department of Housing Preservation and Development to identify safety violations earlier and increase fire safety compliance. The mayor said he plans to work with the City Council to pass a number of fire safety bills, including legislation that would increase fines for landlords who falsely report curing a self-closing door violation.

Hochul recommends five historic places in NYC to be added to state and national registers

Gov. Kathy Hochul last week announced 21 nominations for possible placement on the State and National Registers of Historic Places. The list of nominations includes a diverse set of locations that are intricate to the history of New York. Nominations include early automobile manufacturing sites in Buffalo and Syracuse, a Mohawk Valley cemetery home to the author of the Pledge of Allegiance, and the only remaining 19-century textile mile in Troy. Of the total nominated places, five are located in New York City, including an abandoned Bronx train station designed by Cass Gilbert and an area in Hell's Kitchen once home to a famed open-air market.

The priciest private development in the Bronx opened its first residential tower this week with rents to match. Developed by Brookfield Properties, the $950 million mixed-use Bankside project is one of the largest private investments in Bronx history and sits on 4.3-acres along the Mott Haven waterfront. On Thursday, rents for the market-rate apartments at Third at Bankside were revealed, with prices ranging from $2,455/month for studio apartments to $7,334/month for a three-bedroom unit with a private terrace.

Created by lifestyle icon and floral designer Jeff Leatham, The Orchid Show: Jeff Leatham's Kaleidoscope transforms the garden's historic Enid A. NYC offers free, same-day home delivery of antiviral Covid treatment pills

Mayor Eric Adams on Sunday announced oral antiviral pills are now available for free same-day, at-home delivery for eligible New Yorkers. Oral antiviral pills–as well as monoclonal antibodies–have been shown to be effective in preventing hospitalization and death from Covid. The medication will be available for people who test positive for the virus, have mild or moderate symptoms, and have a doctor's prescription; due to a limited supply, the city is prioritizing those who are at elevated risk for severe illness from the virus.
