Judy Garland apartment

Since it arrived on the market in 2016 for $16.75 million, 6sqft has admired this three-bedroom co-op in the iconic Dakota for its history as the (alleged) onetime home of the equally iconic Judy Garland as well as for its colorful makeover by trendy young designer Sasha Bikoff. Now the apartment, which was owned by the designer’s late mother, former pianist, ballerina, and Studio 54 denizen Jacqueline Bikoff, has reportedly entered contract at its recent asking price of $10 million, according to Mansion Global. Bikoff bought the elegant Upper West Side pad in 2010 for $13 million from renowned bridge players Roy Welland and Christal Henner.

As 6sqft previously reported, Tribeca Film Festival co-founders (with Robert DeNiro) Jane Rosenthal and Craig Hatkoff have been trying to sell their sprawling pad in the storied Dakota since last March, when they listed the 7,500-square-foot combo of no less than four individual units for the suitably vast sum of $39 million. A year and some months later with no takers, the couple, who announced their divorce in 2014–have edited a cool $19 million out of the picture and are now asking $25 million (h/t Curbed).

When this perfectly preserved residence at the Dakota hit the market in July 2015, it was asking $3.6 million, but after a price chop to $2.93 million, it’s found a buyer. The Observer reports that the gorgeous co-op was home to actor Carroll O’Connor–Archie Bunker from “All in the Family”–until he passed away in 2001, from which point his wife Nancy Fields O’Connor maintained ownership until her death in 2014. The new owners paid $2.84 million for the two-bedroom home, which retains original historic details like “huge arched windows with marble sills and built-in shutters… blended patterned hardwood floors, extra tall solid wood doors with original fixtures and etched glass, distinct moldings and the original sunburst copper grills,” as 6sqft previously described.

Roberta Flack first listed her Dakota apartment in June 2015 for $9.5 million, and it’s now come back on the market for $7.5 million with rare interior photos, reports LL NYC. We can’t imagine all those wall-to-wall mirrors will help her case, but it’s always a treat to get a look inside the storied address, especially when the unit is next door to none other than Yoko Ono.

1 WEST 72ND STREET, JUDY GARLAND, SASHA BIKOFF, THE DAKOTA

6sqft has already covered the listing for this impeccable and impressive $16.7M apartment previously owned by the one and only Judy Garland, but now we’ve come across additional images offering a more detailed look into this space at the iconic Dakota. The home was designed by Sasha Bikoff, and from room to room the interior seamlessly combines a variety of patterns and pieces, spanning across design styles and movements without a hiccup. The color palette is simultaneously both bold and soft, and each room is packed full of unique design vignettes.

Some big-time New Yorkers are selling their big-time pad at The Dakota, the most iconic cooperative in the Upper West Side. Jane Rosenthal and Craig Hatkoff, the couple that founded the Tribeca Film Festival with Robert De Niro, have just listed their sprawling five-bedroom apartment for no small sum—$39 million. The couple purchased the apartment more than 20 years ago, but announced their divorce in early 2014. Now, this very impressive home—actually an assemblage of four apartments covering over 7,500 square feet, with 165 feet of frontage along Central Park—is up for grabs.

The Best Address for Less: Live in the Dakota for $1.85M

By Michelle Cohen, Wed, January 20, 2016

Dakota, 1 West 72nd Street, Cool listing, Yoko Ono, Lauren Bacall, Roberta Flack, Prewar Co-op for sale, Upper West Side

While it’s not exactly what we’d call affordable housing, you don’t have to be as rich as Yoko Ono or as famous as Lauren Bacall (whose apartment recently sold for $21 million) to live in the iconic Dakota overlooking Central Park. This pint-sized top-floor aerie on the Upper West Side offers a seriously rare chance to rub elbows with venerable co-op’s celebrity residents–and the memories of notable residents past–for a relatively earthbound $1.85 million.

Though there’s still the nearly $3,000 monthly co-op fee to contend with, it’s not often that a space here that isn’t a storage unit finds its way to the market for less than four or five million at the very least; there are currently three eight-figure units listed, including Roberta Flack’s pad and Judy Garland’s former home. And the one-bedroom apartment itself is just the bright and elegant pre-war gem you’d imagine it to be.

The Dakota, 1 West 72nd Street, Sasha Bikoff, NYC celebrity real estate

Just last week, 6sqft featured a “girly-modern Tribeca triplex” that’s asking $3.75 million. It belongs to buzzed-about young designer Sasha Bikoff, who was also featured in a 2014 NY Times lifestyle piece about NYC’s young contemporary millionaires. And as it turns out, she also designed a colorful yet glam apartment in the famed Dakota, the same unit that reportedly once belonged to Judy Garland.

According to the Observer, the Central Park West residence is asking $16.75 million. But before you get too blown away as to how this 27-year-old designer got such a high-profile commission, public record shows that it was owned by her mother Jacqueline Bikoff, an Iranian pianist and ballerina (and Studio 54 regular) who passed away last September. Sasha undertook the renovation two years ago, earning her spreads in design publications such as MyDomaine and the Times. The latter is where the Judy Garland claim surfaced, but Douglas Elliman listing agent Katherine Gauthier is skeptical as to its validity. No matter, the apartment is definitely legendary.

1 West 72nd Street, The Dakota, co-op, modern

While many of the apartments at The Dakota, the historic co-op building at 1 West 72nd Street on the Upper West Side, are dripping with historic detail, this one is an anomaly. The four-bedroom unit does retain many of the classic details of these famed apartments—12-foot ceilings, wood-burning fireplaces, floor-to-ceiling windows and grand, well-sized rooms. But it’s been significantly renovated with bold, modern design in the kitchen and bedrooms. To have a touch of modernism in one of the most iconic and historic apartment buildings of New York is going to cost you $17.5 million. The unit last sold in 2010, for $11.5 million.

Ever since Lauren Bacall passed away last summer, it’s been all eyes on her longtime Dakota apartment. First, in November, we learned that the actress’s Central Park West home would list for a jaw-dropping $26 million. Then, less than two weeks later, the listing hit, a bit disappointing to many as the photos were the newly-staged versions. But this past March, interior photos of how the place looked when the movie star resided there for more than 50 years were dug up, revealing a treasure trove of antiques and artwork and showcasing beautifully intact original details like fireplaces with carved mantles, huge mahogany doors, and crown molding. In April, the price was reduced by $2.5 million, but now, the Daily News reports that Bacall’s wood-paneled apartment has been purchased by a mystery buyer.
