After a colorful makeover and price chops, Judy Garland’s former Dakota co-op finds a $10M buyer
Since it arrived on the market in 2016 for $16.75 million, 6sqft has admired this three-bedroom co-op in the iconic Dakota for its history as the (alleged) onetime home of the equally iconic Judy Garland as well as for its colorful makeover by trendy young designer Sasha Bikoff. Now the apartment, which was owned by the designer’s late mother, former pianist, ballerina, and Studio 54 denizen Jacqueline Bikoff, has reportedly entered contract at its recent asking price of $10 million, according to Mansion Global. Bikoff bought the elegant Upper West Side pad in 2010 for $13 million from renowned bridge players Roy Welland and Christal Henner.
The meticulously renovated nine-room apartment inherits all the grandeur of the storied building, even after being filled with swoon-worthy rainbow-hued design details. The apartment’s dynamic floor plan (see the gallery below) connects all major rooms to one another while being accessible from a hall or corridor.
The large public rooms have 13-foot ceilings and fine details like gently rounded plastered corners. Other noteworthy features include a formal dining room that overlooks the building’s verdant central courtyard, a dedicated library that is both inviting and private, seven wood-burning fireplaces and three beautifully appointed baths.
On the practical side (yes, there is one!), the whimsical renovation didn’t spare any expense on basics like central air conditioning, restored hardwood floors, pocket doors and shutters, and lacquer walls. The kitchen, an exception to the home’s riot of color in glossy white, offers room for dining and entertaining–or both–with custom cabinetry, marble countertops and top-of-the-line appliances.
A massive closet with enough room for a couch and dresser is wrapped with decadent kelly green curtains and lighting. These little private hideaways can be found throughout the home, making it a busy New Yorker’s dream
