Former Anthony Bourdain food hall team to open Singaporean hawker center in Midtown

Roughly four years since late chef and author Anthony Bourdain canceled his proposal to build a massive Singaporean-inspired food hall in New York City, the plan for the market has been revived. Urbanspace and KF Seetoh, founder of Makansutra, which runs several food courts in Singapore, are teaming up to bring a food market with 18 street-food vendors to 135 West 50th Street in Midtown Manhattan. The market, described as the first authentic Singaporean hawker center in the United States, will open in early 2022.

Six blocks of Broadway will become Manhattan’s largest shared street as part of open space plan

Mayor Bill de Blasio and Department of Transportation Commissioner Hank Gutman have announced more improvements coming to the city's streets, including six blocks of Broadway that will be fully dedicated to pedestrians or modified so that cars, cyclists, and pedestrians can share the street. The DOT’s “Broadway Vision” will reimagine 12 blocks of the Manhattan street as shared public street space.

Target opens new store on the Upper East Side

Target has expanded its New York City footprint once again. A new store opened on the Upper East Side this week a year after the company announced the new Manhattan location. Located at 150 East 86th Street, the 55,000-square-foot store is Target's 12th store in the borough and its 11th "small-format" location, which offers convenient on-the-go options and pick-up service.

The Brooklyn Bridge bike lane is finally open

A long-awaited two-way protected bike lane officially opened on the Brooklyn Bridge Tuesday. Advocated for years by cyclists, the new path replaces the innermost car lane of the Manhattan-bound side of the iconic bridge and leaves the existing elevated promenade for pedestrians only. Both foot and bike traffic on the bridge, nicknamed the "Times Square in the Sky," skyrocketed in recent years, leading to dangerous, crowded conditions.

Huge new LEGO flagship opens at Rockefeller Center

A LEGO flagship store opened in Midtown this week with new hands-on experiences and New York City-inspired builds. Located at 630 Fifth Avenue within the Rockefeller Center complex, the store measures more than 7,100 square feet across two levels. The new shop celebrates the Big Apple with a classic yellow taxi cab, skyscrapers like the Empire State Building, and the lights and billboards of Times Square and Broadway theaters, all made of LEGO bricks.

NYC agency approves removal of racist Theodore Roosevelt statue at AMNH

The New York City Public Design Commission on Monday approved plans to remove and relocate the Theodore Roosevelt statue from the steps of the American Museum of Natural History, about a year after officials called for the controversial sculpture to be taken down. The city's Parks Department and AMNH presented their proposal last week to the Landmarks Preservation Commission, but the agency was unable to reach a decision. On Monday, The PDC voted unanimously to remove and relocate the statue to a relevant cultural institution.

When the coronavirus pandemic hit New York City last spring, the city launched a successful effort to give pedestrians safe outdoor space through its"Open Streets" program, which closed some streets to cars. Extremely popular with New Yorkers, the initiative, along with its Open Restaurants and Open Culture counterparts, was expanded and made permanent this year. A local architecture firm is looking to capitalize on this reclamation of public city space with a new proposal aimed at reviving the once blossoming Flower District.

First post-pandemic Broadway show will open in NYC this August

Broadway is back, even earlier than planned. The Lincoln Center Theater on Tuesday announced that Pass Over, a play produced by Antoinette Chinonye Nwandu and Danya Taymor, will begin previews on August 4, over a month ahead of the expected reopening date for performances. Pass Over will become the first Broadway show to hold performances since the coronavirus pandemic forced all 41 theaters to close on March 12, 2020.

In 2020, NYC subway saw a billion fewer total trips than year prior

Roughly a billion fewer passengers entered the New York City subway system in 2020 than in 2019, according to new data released this week by the Metropolitan Transportation Authority. The annual total ridership on the subway in 2019 was 1,697,787,002 passengers and 639,541,029 passengers in 2020. When the coronavirus pandemic hit last spring and Gov. Andrew Cuomo ordered all nonessential businesses to close, both city subway and bus ridership hit record lows. In April 2020, subway ridership hit just 8 percent of what it was in 2019.

Here are the New York City sites vaccinating kids 12+

With approval from an advisory committee to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention on Wednesday, the Pfizer vaccine is now available for children ages 12 to 15. Gov. Andrew Cuomo has authorized all New York providers to open eligibility for the vaccine to this age group. In New York City, there are over 200 sites offering Pfizer, the only vaccine approved for those aged 12 to 17, including at dozens of pharmacies across the five boroughs and some state-run sites.

All U.S. residents aged 16+ can get the COVID vaccine in New York

Any resident of the United States who is at least 16 years old is now eligible to receive the coronavirus vaccine in New York. In vaccination guidance updated last week, the state's Department of Health ditched the work or residency requirement to previously needed to receive a COVID-19 vaccine. The policy change comes as Mayor Bill de Blasio said he wants to set up mobile vaccination hubs at popular tourist destinations, like Central Park and Times Square, to vaccinate visitors to the Big Apple.

Vaccine hub opening at Museum of Natural History with slots set aside for cultural institution workers

Those who work at cultural institutions, as well as public housing residents, will be prioritized at a new COVID-19 vaccine site opening on Friday at the Upper West Side's American Museum of Natural History. Mayor de Blasio made the announcement in a press conference this morning, noting that "literally you can get vaccinated below the blue whale," who is now sporting a giant bandaid. In a show of support, the Museum will give complimentary general admission on a future visit for a group of four to anyone who receives their vaccine at the site.

New Yorkers 50+ can now get vaccinated at NYC sites without an appointment

New Yorkers aged 50 years and older can now get vaccinated without an appointment, Mayor Bill de Blasio announced Saturday. Previously, these no-appointment slots were set aside for those 75 years old and above. The walk-up shots are currently available at 31 city-run sites; pharmacies and mass vaccination sites run by the state still require advance registration. On Wednesday, Gov. Andrew Cuomo announced walk-in vaccinations would be open to those aged 60+ at 16 state-run sites starting Friday, April 23.

Bike lanes to replace car lanes on the Brooklyn and Queensboro bridges

New York City plans to ban cars from part of two major East River bridges and reserve them for cyclists. Mayor Bill de Blasio on Thursday unveiled a proposal to transform the innermost lane of the Brooklyn Bridge into a two-way protected bike lane and convert the north outer roadway of the Queensboro Bridge into a two-way bike-only lane. The "Bridges for the People" plan was announced as part of the mayor's final State of the City address, "A Recovery for All of Us."

More than 1,000 chain stores in New York City have closed over the past year, the largest year-over-year decline in over a decade. According to the Center for an Urban Future's annual "State of the Chains" report, nearly one out of every seven chain retailers open at this time last year is now closed, due to the coronavirus pandemic coupled with the continued growth of e-commerce. Even Dunkin', the city's largest retailer, closed 18 locations in 2020, the first time the coffee chain experienced a decline since CUF began tracking chains 13 years ago.

With the need for support services at an all-time high coupled with a lack of foot traffic at retail stores due to the coronavirus pandemic, The Salvation Army has had to think outside the kettle this holiday season. While typically the charity group relies on its bell-ringers stationed outside of stores with red kettles to raise money for those in need, this year the Salvation Army is calling for digital donations. To bring attention to its online fundraising campaign, the group unveiled on Tuesday a giant 32-foot red kettle in Times Square.

When it comes to reopenings, we're seeing a lot of positive news--most major museums reopened, we got to watch a baseball season, and the holidays are being reimagined. In other cases, reopening is further off--the Met Opera and Philharmonic cancelled their entire 2021 seasons, and Broadway will remain dark until at least June. New Yorkers pay tribute to Mayor David Dinkins

David N. Dinkins, New York City's first and only Black mayor, died at his Manhattan home on Monday at the age of 93. Dinkins, who entered office in January 1990, famously referred to the city's diversity as a "gorgeous mosaic" and advocated economic and education equality for all New Yorkers. Despite serving just one term, Dinkins is credited with expanding affordable housing, lowering crime rates, revitalizing Times Square, and signing a deal that guaranteed the U.S. Open would be held in the city for decades. After news of his death broke, several New York leaders and luminaries paid tribute to the trailblazing icon.

Like the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade, the Rockefeller Center Christmas Tree lighting, and the Times Square ball drop on New Year's Eve, many of the city's holiday markets will also be online-only this year because of the coronavirus pandemic. While nothing beats the magic of New York City during the holiday season and the traditions that come along with it, there are still ways to support local artists, businesses, and vendors this year. In addition to a few markets happening in-person this year, including the open-air shops at Bryant Park, a number have gone virtual, allowing you to shop safely from home, no matter where that is.

Krispy Kreme opens on the Upper West Side

Finally, some sweet news. Krispy Kreme on Tuesday opened its latest New York City shop at the corner of Broadway and 96th Street on the Upper West Side. The new doughnut shop comes after the company opened a new store in Harlem and a massive flagship in Times Square this summer, part of a Krispy Kreme expansion in the city.

New Target stores in Columbus Circle and Hell’s Kitchen are now open

After construction and COVID-related delays, Target has officially opened three new small-format stores on the Upper West Side, Hell's Kitchen, and Staten Island. The store at 61st and Broadway at Columbus Circle was first announced two years ago and was planned to open in 2019. Likewise, the store on 10th Avenue and 45th Street was first announced four years ago and was also planned to open in 2019. The store in the North Shore section of Staten Island is only delayed by six months.
