14,700 homes planned for Long Island City after Council approves largest rezoning in 25 years

The New York City Council on Wednesday unanimously approved the city’s largest neighborhood rezoning in 25 years. The OneLIC Neighborhood Plan rezones 54 blocks of a largely industrial area of Long Island City to allow for 14,700 new homes, including 4,350 permanently affordable units. The plan will create a continuous public waterfront from Gantry Plaza State Park to Queensbridge Park and includes $2 billion in city commitments, unlocking more than 3.5 million square feet of commercial and industrial space and significant public-realm upgrades.

City Council committees approve Long Island City neighborhood rezoning

On Wednesday, the City Council’s Subcommittee on Zoning and Franchises and Committee on Land Use approved the OneLIC Neighborhood Plan, expected to bring nearly 15,000 new homes, including 4,350 permanently affordable units, to a 54-block stretch of the Queens neighborhood. City Planning Commission approves Long Island City rezoning

The proposal to rezone Long Island City, which could bring tens of thousands of new homes to the Queens neighborhood, advanced this week with a key approval. On Wednesday, the City Planning Commission voted to approve the OneLIC Neighborhood Plan, which would rezone a 54-block industrial section of the waterfront to make way for 14,700 homes, with at least 4,300 of them permanently affordable, the most homes created by a neighborhood rezoning in 25 years. The plan also calls for more than 3.5 million square feet of commercial and industrial space, as well as a continuous, publicly accessible waterfront from Gantry Plaza State Park to Queensbridge Park.

A 46-story residential tower designed by CetraRuddy is ready to rise in Long Island City after developers secured financing. Developers Baron Property Group and LargaVista Companies on Monday announced that 30-25 Queens Boulevard, a 525-foot-tall project set to bring more than 500 homes to the neighborhood, had acquired $388.5 million in construction financing. The tower will include 561 residences, 451 rentals and 110 condos, ranging from studios to two-bedrooms, along with 21,000 square feet of ground-floor retail and a suite of expansive amenities.

City looks to build mixed-use project with up to 900 homes on Hunter’s Point South parcel

The city is seeking a developer to build a mixed-use development on one of the last vacant parcels in the Hunter's Point South neighborhood of Long Island City. The Department of Housing Preservation and Development last week issued a request for proposals for Parcel E, the sixth of seven sites that are part of the city's 30-acre redevelopment of the waterfront. For this project, the city wants a multi-tower, mixed-use project with between 850 and 900 apartments, with up to 70 percent of them affordable.

55-story Long Island City condo with over 600 units moves ahead

A massive 55-story condo tower with over 600 homes in Long Island City is moving forward after developers secured $525 million in construction financing. Charney Companies and Tavros, in partnership with Incoco Capital, announced this week funding for a 636-unit development at 24-19 Jackson Avenue and 45-03 23rd Street in the Court Square section of the neighborhood. The developers received $425 million from Madison Realty Capital and an additional $100 million from Kushner Companies and OneIM.

NYC sues architecture firm behind new Long Island City library over accessibility issues

New York City has filed a lawsuit against the architects behind the inaccessible Hunters Point Library in Long Island City, as first reported by Crain's New York. Filed in Manhattan State Supreme Court on Wednesday, the lawsuit claims Steven Holl Architects violated its contract with the city by designing an inaccessible building. The suit says that the architecture firm should be forced to pay $10 million to cover the renovations needed to make the building accessible for people with disabilities.

7 train will not run between Queens and Manhattan for six weekends

The 7 train will not run between Queens and Manhattan on six weekends starting next month as work begins to make Queensboro Plaza station fully accessible, the Metropolitan Transportation Authority announced Tuesday. The $74 million project includes the addition of two elevators, an expanded mezzanine, new lighting and boarding areas, and upgrades to the existing street and station stairs to meet current Americans with Disabilities Act (ADA) standards. To carry out these upgrades, the MTA will be suspending 7-line service between 34th Street-Hudson Yards and Queensboro Plaza on certain weekends in February through April, and suspending the N line in May.
