Upper West Side school-to-condo conversion reveals $18M solarium penthouse in former gymnasium

October 3, 2018

As of today, listings are live for developer/architect Cary Tamarkin’s 555 West End Avenue. The project converted the former Catholic St. Agnes Boys High School into a 13-unit luxury condo. Not only does it retain the facade’s original 1908 English collegiate- and Gothic-style elements, but the interiors benefit from the historic structure’s 12-foot ceilings and oversized windows. The most impressive of these residences is undoubtedly the solarium penthouse, carved out of the school’s one-time gymnasium. Listed for $18 million, the incredible space has a soaring 20-foot-high vaulted glass ceiling and an enormous, floor-to-ceiling arched window wall.

The penthouse, “the kind of apartment that people see in movies and dream about,” according to the listing, owes it grandness to the gorgeous great room, which opens onto a 500-square-foot outdoor terrace. In total, the unit is 5,263 square feet and has three bedrooms.

Like all the units, it has marble slab counters and backsplashes in the kitchen, oak vanities with Calacatta Gold countertops and Italian marble floors in the bathrooms, and white oak herringbone floors.

The Library unit

The other units listed today are a $7.9 million four-bedroom, a $10.3 million five-bedroom, and another five-bedroom in the school’s original library (it’s called “The Library”) that has a double-height living room with a catwalk and is listed for $10.5 million.

The amenities package includes a 24-hour doorman, fitness center, stroller valet, residents’ lounge, rec room, private individual storage rooms that come with each unit, and additional cold storage and bike storage.

Cary Tamarkin purchased 555 West End Avenue from the Archdiocese of New York for $50 million in 2014. It’s the architect’s first project on the Upper West Side; an offering plan listed an impressive $161.3 million sellout. Tamarkin is developing the building in partnership with CL Investment Group.
