Starting in January, the World Trade Center PATH station will close on weekends to finish repairing damage to tunnels and equipment caused by Hurricane Sandy. Once the repairs start on January 5, service to WTC will terminate at the Exchange Place Station on Saturdays at 12:01 a.m., and reopen at 5 a.m. on Mondays after each weekend.

PATH began weekend closures and service changes related to Sandy repairs in 2014, but postponed resiliency work at the World Trade Center station until the installation of a new federally mandated rail-safety system was complete. This work was finished in November, as the Wall Street Journal reported.

Officials have stated that the PATH system suffered more than half the damage from Sandy, in terms of repair costs. In addition to the massive floods brought by Sandy, which destroyed signal and switch systems, corrosive salt water ruined much of the underground electrical and mechanical systems at the World Trade Center site. Repair work over the next two years will focus on the tracks, third rails, electrical, signal, and communication infrastructure in the tunnels.

Construction work is slated to take place through December 2020, and the station will be closed every weekend until then, with the exception of major holidays.

Passengers will have access to direct ferry service at Harborside Ferry Landing to and from Brookfield Place Terminal during the hours of closure. Find out more about travel alternatives at the Port Authority’s website, or download the RidePATH app for updated train and ferry schedules.
