NYC’s coronavirus cancellations, closures, and precautions

With city and state government closing schools until at least the end of April and shutting down restaurants and bars aside from takeout and delivery, NYC is in unprecedented times. 6sqft has begun compiling a list of closures, cancellations, and postponements, as well as information on how the subway, ride-share companies, and public entities like libraries are handling the outbreak and how refunds or credits are being issued. As the situation develops, we’ll be updating this list to the best of our knowledge. This list was last updated at 2:30 pm on Thursday, March 26.

THEATERS + VENUES

Broadway
Broadway went dark as of 5:00pm on Thursday, March 12th. As of now, they will resume on April 13.

Lincoln Center
Lincoln Center has suspended constituent public performances and screenings until May 17.

New York Philharmonic
In coordination with Lincoln Center, the New York Philharmonic has canceled all performances through June 13. Ticketholders have three options: 1) donate their tickets; 2) receive an account credit; or 3) request a refund (must be done within the next 14 days).

Carnegie Hall
All events at Carnegie Hall have been canceled through Sunday, May 10, including sites both on and offsite.

The Metropolitan Opera
The Met Opera has canceled the remainder of its season, which would have ended on May 9. Those with tickets can get a full refund, purchase tickets of the same value for future performances, or donate the value as a tax-deductible contribution.

The Shed
The Shed suspended its exhibitions and performances until further notice.

Joyce Theater
All performances at the Joyce have been canceled through May 3. Ticketholders have three options: 1) donate their tickets; 2) exchange tickets for a Joyce gift certificate; or 3: request a refund (refunds will be automatically issued to anyone who did not respond within 48 hours).

Madison Square Garden
Most events through early April have been postponed.

Film Forum
Soho’s Film Forum is temporarily closed until further notice.

Metrograph
Screenings at 7 Ludlow Street are suspended until further notice. Pre-purchased tickets can be used for future screenings.

IFC Center 
The IFC Center is temporarily closed and plans to re-open on Wednesday, April 1. Tickets purchased for shows during that time will be automatically refunded.

Brooklyn Academy of Music
BAM has suspended all live programming, as well as at BAM Rose Cinemas, until further notice. Tickets can be refunded.

Nitehawk Cinema
Nitehawk has suspended all programming at both its Park Slope and Williamsburg locations until further notice. Refunds will be automatically issued.

Alamo Drafthouse
The Brooklyn and Yonkers locations are both temporarily closed, and Alamo is automatically refunding tickets.

MUSEUMS + OTHER CULTURAL INSTITUTIONS

New York Public Library
All NYPL locations are temporarily closed to the public until further notice. All programming and events at the Stephen A. Schwarzman Building, the Schomburg Center, and the Library for the Performing Arts are also canceled or postponed until further notice.

Brooklyn Public Library
All BPL locations are temporarily closed to the public until further notice. All programming and events are also canceled or postponed until further notice.

Queens Public Library
All QPL locations are temporarily closed to the public until further notice. All programming and events are also canceled or postponed until further notice.

The Metropolitan Museum of Art
All three of the Met’s locations, the Met Fifth Avenue, the Met Breuer, and the Met Cloisters, are temporarily closed until further notice.

MoMA
Through at least March 30, the Museum will be temporarily closed to the public, along with MoMA PS1, and the MoMA Design Stores on 53rd Street and in Soho.

Museum of Natural History
The Museum is temporarily closed to the public until further notice.

New-York Historical Society 
The NYHS is temporarily closed to the public through the end of the month with all public programs canceled through the end of April.

Whitney Museum of American Art 
The Museum is temporarily closed to the public until further notice. Those who purchased advance tickets for museum admission or public programs will be contacted for refunds.

The Guggenheim
The Museum is temporarily closed to the public until further notice. All tours and public events scheduled through April 30 are canceled or postponed. Refunds will be issued to anyone who has bought event tickets or advance tickets to attend the Museum.

The Frick Collection
The galleries and library at the Frick Collection are temporarily closed. Planned events like the Young Fellows Ball, the New Members Reception, Teen Night, First Fridays, and other lectures and concerts are also canceled.

Museum of the City of New York
The Museum is temporarily closed to the public, and all public and education programs, field trips, and private tours will be temporarily suspended.

El Museo del Barrio
The Museum is temporarily closed to the public and all programming will be postponed until further notice.

Cooper Hewitt
The Museum will be temporarily closed to the public. Along with all Smithsonian institutions, they are postponing or canceling all public events, programming, and gatherings through June 1.

The Jewish Museum
The Museum is temporarily closed to the public. Refunds will be issued for all programs and events.

Rubin Museum of Art
The Museum is temporarily closed to the public, and all public events are canceled through May 4. Refunds will be provided automatically for all events and programs during this time.

The Studio Museum in Harlem
The Museum is temporarily closed to the public.

The Morgan Library & Museum
The Museum is temporarily closed to the public, and all events and programs have been cancelled through April 30. Refunds will be provided automatically for all events and programs during this time.

9/11 Memorial & Museum
The Museum is temporarily closed to the public. The 9/11 Memorial & Museum 5K Run/Walk and Community Day on Sunday, April 26 has been cancelled.

New Museum
The Museum will be temporarily closed to the public.

Museum of Arts and Design
The Museum is temporarily closed to the public. Anyone who purchased admission or programming tickets will be contacted for refunds.

Museum at Eldridge Street
The Museum at Eldridge Street is temporarily closed.

Edge at Hudson Yards
Hudson Yards’ brand-new observation deck Edge is temporarily closed and will be issuing refunds to all ticketholders through April 13. Guests with tickets after this date can request a refund.

Empire State Building
The Empire State Building’s observatories are temporarily closed until further notice.

One World Observatory
The observatory atop One World Trade Center is temporarily closed. Those with pre-purchased tickets or pre-booked events will be contacted to make alternative arrangements.

United Nations Headquarters
The UN has closed to the public, suspending all tours through April 12.

92Y
All in-person classes, talks, concerts, readings, and dance performances at the 92Y have been suspended until further notice. Tickets will be credited or refunded, though the institution hopes guests will consider them as a donation.

South Street Seaport Museum
The Museum is temporarily closed to the public. This includes all public access at the Museum’s locations at 12 Fulton Street, Bowne & Co. on Water Street, and the Wavertree and Ambrose ships on Pier 16, as well as all programming.

Brooklyn Museum
The Museum is temporarily closed to the public. Those who purchased tickets for events during this time will receive a full refund.

Brooklyn Children’s Museum
The Museum is temporarily closed to the public with hopes to reopen on Saturday, April 4.

Jane’s Carousel
The waterfront carousel in Brooklyn Bridge Park in Dumbo is closed until further notice.

Queens Museum
The Museum is temporarily closed to the public.

Museum of the Moving Image
The Museum is temporarily closed to the public.

Noguchi Museum
The Noguchi Museum is temporarily closed and all public programs and scheduled events are canceled until further notice , for which ticket holders can receive a full refund or credit.

Bronx Museum
The Museum is temporarily closed to the public.

OUTDOOR SPACES

All NYC Public Parks
Sports and group recreation such as basketball, football, softball, and soccer are suspended until further notice. Public gatherings are banned through April 12.

Central Park
New York City’s backyard remains open to the public, and its visitor centers will maintain normal operating hours. However many tours and programs are suspended through April 15 (see link above for a list).

High Line
The High Line is temporarily closed. All tours and programming are cancelled through April 30.

Prospect Park
Prospect Park remains open to the public, but all events and programs have been cancelled through April 12.

Brooklyn Bridge Park
The Park remains open, but the Environmental Education Center is temporarily closed until further notice, and several events have been postponed. The Conservancy Soccer Leagues are suspended.

Brooklyn Botanic Garden
The Garden is temporarily closed, and all programs, tours, and workshops have been canceled through April.

Deno’s Wonder Wheel at Coney Island 
This April 4 would have been the 100th season for Coney Island’s famous Wonder Wheel, but they have had to postpone the opening and related festivities.

Wave Hill
The Bronx’s 28-acre public garden is temporarily closed.

The New York Botanical Garden
In the Bronx, The New York Botanical Garden has temporarily closed until further notice. All events and programs, including The Orchid Show, are suspended.

Queens Botanical Garden
The Garden is temporarily closed, and all public events are canceled through April.

Snug Harbor
On Staten Island, the Snug Harbor cultural center and botanic garden has kept its main outdoor grounds and gardens open to the public, however, the Newhouse Center for Contemporary Art and the New York Chinese Scholar’s Garden are closed until further notice. All public programming is also postponed.

Wildlife Conservation Society Zoos + Aquarium 
The Wildlife Conservation Society temporarily closed the Bronx Zoo, Central Park Zoo, Prospect Park Zoo, Queens Zoo, and NY Aquarium. The private Staten Island Zoo is also closed.

RELIGIOUS INSTITUTIONS 

Archdiocese of New York
Beginning the weekend of March 14-15, the Archdiocese of New York canceled masses, however, Catholic churches will remain open for private prayer.

RESTAURANTS + FOOD 

Ban on eat-in dining
In the states of New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut, restaurants and bars are not allowed to offer eat-in dining; they may only offer takeout and delivery.

Seamless
During this time, Seamless is deferring commission fees for impacted independent restaurants. They have also created the Seamless Community Relief Fund, which takes Donate the Change contributions and earmarks them for “charitable organizations that support drivers and restaurants impacted by the coronavirus outbreak.”

Grubhub
The food delivery service has teamed up with the Mayors of Chicago, New York City, San Francisco, Boston, and Portland to temporarily suspend collection of up to $100 million in commission payments from impacted independent restaurants.

EVENTS

Tony Awards
Scheduled to air on June 7 from Radio City, the 74th Annual Tony Awards have been postponed for an undecided later date.

Met Gala
Originally scheduled for May 4 to kick off the Met’s new show, “About Time: Fashion and Duration,” the annual Met Gala, which brings in as much as $15 million, has been postponed indefinitely.

Frieze New York
The popular art fair on Randall’s Island Park was scheduled to take place from May 7 to 10, but has been canceled this year and will resume in 2021.

NYCxDESIGN
The month-long design festival has been postponed from May to October.

Tribeca Film Festival
Scheduled to kick off on April 15, the annual Tribeca Film Festival has been postponed; future plans are not yet available.

Governors Ball
Scheduled to take place on Randall’s Island Park from June 5-7, the music festival has been cancelled. Tickets for the 2020 event will automatically be valid for 2021, but ticketholders can also request a refund until April 10.

Affordable Art Fair
Originally scheduled to take place from March 26-29, the New York Spring Affordable Art Fair will be rescheduled for a later date. Existing tickets will be valid for these new dates, which should be announced in the coming days.

Architectural Digest Design Show
This year’s AD Design Show at Pier 54 has been postponed from March 19-22 to June 25-28. All purchased tickets will be automatically refunded.

2020 Kips Bay Decorator Show House
The 48th Annual Kips Bay Decorator Show House in New York, which was supposed to open this spring, will be postponed until later this year.

Village Preservation House Tour
The annual nonprofit benefit that lets guests tour some of Greenwich Village’s most beautiful homes has been postponed from May 3 to Sunday, October 4.

Municipal Art Society
MAS has canceled its Grand Central tours and all other tours through the end of the month. Refunds will be automatically issued.

Grand Bazaar
The Upper West Side flea market will close its weekly Sunday market until further notice.

Television show studio audiences
Television shows that tape in New York City with studio audiences are quickly beginning to tape audience-less. ABC has done this first and foremost with The View, Live With Ryan and Kelly, Good Morning America, and the Tamron Hall ShowThe Wendy Williams Show, on Fox, and Rachel Ray distributed by CBS will do the same.

Late night shows like The Late Show with Stephen Colbert, Late Night with Seth Meyer, The Tonight Show Starring Jimmy Fallon, Full Frontal with Samantha Bee, Last Week Tonight, and The Daily Show with Trevor Noah will also be shot without audiences as a precautionary measure.

AIA / Center for Architecture
The Center is temporarily closed through April 30, and all events are postponed through this date.

The Architectural League
The next several weeks of programming have been rescheduled to dates in June and September.

Brooklyn Navy Yard
The Navy Yard has closed its permanent exhibition at Building 92 and canceled all public programming until further notice.

LOOT: MAD About Jewelry at the Museum of Arts and Design
The event that was scheduled for the week of April 20, 2020, has been rescheduled for the week of December 7, 2020.

SPORTS + RECREATION 

All gyms
As of Monday, March 16 at 8pm, all gyms in New York, New Jersey, and Connecticut had to close. It seems that most establishments will not be billing members during this time.

NBA
The NBA has suspended its 2020 season.

NCAA
The NCAA has suspended its 2020 season.

MLB
Major League Baseball has suspended Spring Training; as of now, Opening Day will be delayed.

NHL
The National Hockey League is pausing the current season.

MLS
Major League Soccer has suspended its season until at least May 10.

TRANSPORTATION 

MTA
As 6sqft previously reported, the MTA has undertaken strict cleaning measures on its trains, stations, cars, and buses. As of March 11th, they started doubling their sanitization efforts, disinfecting stations twice daily and making sure that their full rolling fleet goes no more than 72 hours without undergoing sanitization. As of March 25, they cut service by 25 percent.

Uber
For any driver or delivery person diagnosed with COVID-19 or who has been asked to self-isolate, Uber will provide financial assistance for up to 14 days while their account is on hold. They’re also working with public health authorities to possibly temporarily suspend the accounts of riders who have contracted or been exposed to COVID-19. In addition, Uber is working to provide drivers with disinfectants and offering an option to have food left at your door that’s ordered through Uber Eats.

Lyft
Lyft will follow the same precautions as Uber with drivers but does not specify for how long they will support affected drivers. For riders, the protocol is the same. Lyft is also distributing more than 200,000 bottles of hand sanitizer and cleaning supplies to drivers at no cost to them.

Taxi & Limousine Commission
The TLC has told cab and for-hire vehicle drivers to sanitize their vehicles daily using bleach or peroxide.
