Duplex Loft Conversion by Steven Harris Features Jaw Dropping Views Inside and Out

October 22, 2014

In a city where people pay a premium for spectacular views, few panoramas rival the majestic beauty of the Brooklyn Bridge. The window-filled living room of this Water Street duplex in the South Street Seaport Historic District certainly gives the owners their money’s worth, with the landmark East River crossing seemingly only inches away. But it’s the views inside this loft conversion courtesy of Steven Harris Architects that will have you either scratching your head or experiencing jaw-dropping delight.

The apartment’s contemporary design is familiar enough, with a minimalist aesthetic and a generally quiet palette of wall color. Until your senses start to pick up on something not quite right. Is that a translucent shower in the middle of the living space? And is someone actually using it? Well, we did say jaw-dropping views.

Another interesting view in the home is the large image of billowing jet-plume against a brilliant blue sky. We wondered about the juxtaposition of the larger-than-life earbuds in this piece of photographic art until we realized those were actually shower heads and the photo in question was the shower “ceiling”. Gives new meaning to the term skylight.

More translucent beauty surrounds the stair to the second floor, making it appear as if it’s floating in a sea of foamy green. Everywhere you turn wonderful little surprises await, from the oodles of storage subtly hidden behind a wall of wood grain doors to the quirky cut-out of a roaring fire sitting squarely in the middle of one wall.

But even in the midst of such whimsical touches there’s no escaping the home’s classically modern appeal. Check it out in our gallery below.
