Julie Lansom’s Retro-Futuristic Sputnik Lamps Are Inspired by the First Russian Satellite Sent into Space
Julie Lansom is a versatile artist whose work happens between her camera and her Paris design studio. She focuses on the importance of colors and has a passion for authentic materials, as well as adding a hint of nostalgic charm for creating hand-made, functional crafts. We chose to feature her Sputnik Lamps because we love the intricate weaving process and mesmerizing shadow that amplifies her delicate work inspired by satellites.

Lansom calls herself a “handcrafted decoration designer.” Her lovely Sputnik series take inspiration from the first Russian satellite sent into space and has a retro-futuristic spirit straight out of a science fiction book. Each lamp is unique and hand-woven by Lansom herself, who meticulously crafts them from painted wood and high-quality cotton or wool threads.

Working from her light and airy Parisian atelier, Lansom undertakes her designs by first carefully selecting her yarn palette and then pulling each string taut around a geometric frame until a complex interwoven pattern emerges. She’s designed several models of these semi-transparent shades; some hang from the ceiling and others stand on the floor like a sculpture. Whether lit or not, they will ad a fantastic edge to any interior.
