Video: Zaha Hadid speaks about what influenced 520 West 28th Street’s design

January 12, 2017

Zaha Hadid Architects has released a new video in which the firm’s late principal, internationally celebrated starchitect Zaha Hadid, discusses the ideas that influenced the iconic, innovative and controversial design of her first residential project in New York City, the High Line adjacent 520 West 28th Street, developed by Related Cos. The 11-story residence was voted 6sqft’s 2016 Building of the Year and is currently nearing completion.

Anchored by Hadid’s belief that every project should have a very strong central idea that should remain intact even as the project wends its way to completion, the luxurious residence’s undulating chevron patterns are reconstructed in the video’s animation as the designer tells of her longtime fascination with the neighborhood, the involvement of the cityscape in a project and the building as an extension of the pavement.

She speaks also of the relationship between the High Line and the building next to it: “It’s like your back yard.” About her fondness for the Chelsea site, she mentions that “When you have a neighborhood which is quite fresh and new,” it gives you more freedom to innovate, and in turn, “we can improve society to make a better life.”

The apartments at the striking addition to the cityscape have interiors also designed by Hadid and range in price from $5 million to $50 million for a large penthouse. As 6sqft has reported, developer Moinan Group is moving forward on a residential and cultural project designed by the late architect at 220 Eleventh Avenue.
