NYC opens applications for new outdoor dining program, unveils modular sheds

Say hello to the future of outdoor dining in New York City. Mayor Eric Adams on Tuesday launched the application process for restaurants to take part in Dining Out NYC, the city’s permanent outdoor dining program, and unveiled prototypes of the allowable roadway dining sheds. Designed by WXY architecture + urban design and fabricated by SITU, the customizable prototypes are made of materials from a standard kit, which makes it easier for restaurants to abide by the program’s new guidelines.

Second phase begins on affordable housing complex at former Bronx juvenile jail

The five-acre mixed-use development at a former juvenile jail site in the Bronx is moving forward. New York City officials on Wednesday broke ground on the second phase of the Peninsula, which will bring over 700 affordable homes and a manufacturing building to Hunts Point. The project's second phase includes two buildings with 359 apartments, a public plaza, a parking garage, and community space. The mixed-use complex is rising on the site of the former Spofford Juvenile Detention Center, which closed in 2011 and was notorious for its mistreatment of children.

New plan by BIG and WXY will help make Downtown Brooklyn a ‘competitive national urban center’

Downtown Brooklyn Partnership announced today the selection of a joint proposal from design firms WXY Studio (WXY) and Bjarke Ingels Group (BIG Architects) for a public realm action plan aimed at implementing long-term improvements to Downtown Brooklyn’s plazas, streets, and public spaces to keep pace with the neighborhood's unprecedented growth. According to a press release, the two firms will conduct a comprehensive study and create an implementation plan for Downtown Brooklyn’s public realm and help "advance Downtown Brooklyn as a competitive, national urban center."
